First off, you mean x and n. Second, n is typically used when the unknown is a natural number, i.e. positive whole number.
Maths was invented by Europeans and Asians. Americans were, as usual, incredibly late to the party and should follow their elders and betters. Otherwise they’ll mess things up. See also: American democracy.
Americans ARE Europeans and Asians (and Africans, etc).

Or more, in my case! I am not taking the bait, thought, because in the 30 years since I finished Calc 3, I have needed to use Calc exactly zero times in my life even as an engineer. So I have no desire to dust that off!
