Marathon Weekend 2024

Had a great time on a local Cider Hustle 5K yesterday as Benjamin and I continue to get ready for the 5K! We’ve shaved nearly 15 minutes off our time since this summer. So everyone - keep going!!

Congratulations! The hot cider sounds good right about now.

The key to success is persistence. If you put in the work, you will reap the benefits. You and Benjamin have already proven that.

Thanks for posting. The timing could not have been better. I have entered the “dark-times” of my training plan where all the runs are getting longer and longer. I am up to 5.5 hours a week right now. I am becoming more and more tired. The real mental training has arrived.

Also, it brings insatiable hunger. I feel at times I am eating constantly from 3pm - 9pm at night and still cannot feel full.

Stick to the plans people. We are almost there! We have 72 days until the 5k…

You’ve got this!!

Totally know that feeling that runs feel longer and longer like you just can’t make it around one more street. The adrenaline will kick in on race day (especially at 5:00 am) in the energy of the event - and you’ll post some massively impressive times!! Stick with it.

ADR day for us opens tomorrow, so it’s getting close.

General question for veteran runners…looks like we have to join a VQ for a return time to pick up bibs.

Curious if that VQ runs through MDE, and if so - does BG1 work? I wrote and asked Joel, but he wasn’t sure if BG1 would work with this event, but confirmed if MDE is the app used to join the VQ - BG1 should work. Any one try this before?

Other tips for getting an earlier return time (to enjoy the rest of the day).

The VQ is only for, very specifically, non-prepaid runDisney merch. The expo doesn’t use it, nor picking up bibs or race shirts or prepaid merch. But if you want 5k pins or a 1/2 magnet or a I did it Dopey sweatshirt, that uses the VQ.

I was just typing that up and you beat me to the punch. VQ = stand in line to give Disney all your extra $$ for merch you did not pre-purchase in the online store.

The only requirement for the bib pickup will be the completion of the digital waiver and an expo check-in pass. The check-in pass does not restrict you to a specific time for bib pickup.

We typically do not rush to WWoS to pick up our bib first thing in the morning. We like to wait until late afternoon/evening so there are no long lines for bib pickup.

Nice! Looks like you are going early. Goodluck on your ADRs.

Thanks so much for the quick and thorough responses. WOW did I misunderstand the process; since we pre-purchased shirts, we don’t need a VQ, correct? Waivers signed online, so we Just go anytime. Yay then for a (less stressful) morning of mini golf with DS12. Thinking Fantasia this trip….

Favorite places to eat the night before a run?

Oye ve; ADR was an IT disaster. Ended up calling at 7:00, so all good. But still can’t make a reservation even tonight - regardless of computer or browser or incognito or server.

Correct. There will be a separate area for pre-paid merch, usually somewhere around the shirt pick up area, though rD can change the layout at anytime. But it won’t be in the area that needs the VQ

The only other item is the expo check-in pass. It is pretty easy to get. Details will be released closer to the event.

I wish the expo check-in pass would be required to get into the rD merch area on day 1.

Had my 21 miles today after the wine and dine half and I am crying . . .
I hope this will be easier on the actual day

@FeatherYogi I know where you are at. I am feeling the same way these days.

I have to remind myself that the physical training, although tough sometimes, it not the real training we are doing. It is the mental training that we are working on right now to will our way through the tough miles.

You will prevail. I know when I have looked back at the milestones that seem almost impossible when preparing, the reflection on the accomplishment brings a smile to my face. That sense of pride.

Today was almost impossible to motivate myself out the front door to get the long run in. I delayed and delayed and delayed. I even convinced myself that I was too tired to go out and took a 30 minute power nap first. I am counting the minutes until I can stop the ever-increasing time on feet during training and finally hit the taper…(only 20 more runs until then).

Back to your last hope…

All I can say is that the actual marathon feels so much better than the training. I like to think of it as the victory lap for getting through the training. All the characters, the music, the positive energy from all the other runners makes it so much more bearable and enjoyable.

You got this! Take the time to have that really good cry and let it go. You did 21 miles! The marathon will be a piece of cake. You broke the 20-mile barrier. Only 10 k to go after that…that is not even your short run in a training plan anymore!

This is the struggle right here.

You need more recovery time and also a slower build - that’s a huge leap!

You’ll be fine. Plenty of time yet. Breathe, hydrate, medicate, and rest.

OMG this is so much the truth!

Hold on a second…what does your training plan look like?

As OB said, rest has to definitely be built into your training plan. A rule of thumb is that you should never increase more than 10% from one week to the next. In my plans, every other week is a step back for the rest and recovery…kind of like a “two steps forward one step back” thing.

Following Galloway
There was walking at the beginning and end for sure

When I did Galloway it was easily the second week of December before I hit 21 miles. And you just did 13 for the last one. This weekend would have been my ?19 miler IIRC (I did a half marathon relay with my sister - and I did 6 before I took the baton, while she did 6 after)
