DVC You There! - Now with Bonus Content

They are all in college.

John said tonight he’d like to go at least a night or two. I was thinking tho that maybe @ SirGreggLadyV or @ Broph1988 would like it. But I don’t want to do anything dishonest either.

I don’t think it would be. You paid for it. If you have friends that could take it… It’s not as cut throat as Disney World.

Super Cheapo Price Drop:

1-night BW Studio 11/12 orig $294/night now $252/n or 39% under median

NEW:

3-night GF Studio 01/04 for $374/night or 28% under median

3-night OKW Studio 01/12 for $230/night or 19% under

Chances are we’ll see some lower priced OKW listings as we get closer to January, but not so many that it wouldn’t be a risk to wait if you can use these dates. $230 is a pretty nice price in the grand scheme.

Price Drop:

8-night Aulani 1 Bedroom 01/09 orig $828/night now $736/n or 29% under median

While certainly not a “cheap” room and while there have been lower prices listed for it, not in this time frame. Also, as an OCEAN View and a long booking, that is IMHO a very terrific price if you are looking for an Aulani trip in January.

NEW:

This one is a 100% win any day of the year:
3-night OKW Studio 01/05 for $200/night or 30% under median

2-night Poly Studio 01/12 for $400/night or 24% under

Quick update on the plan to jump from using Caspio for my search engine:

Looks like the Wordpress plugin I have been playing with is allowing me to recreate much of the search functionality of the current Caspio tool.

While I am finding it has a few weirdly surprising limitations in filtering etc, I’m still in play mode and trying to both see both how it breaks and what better looking data presentations I can create. There are a few positive changes I like too, like being able to create conditional formatting logic to highlight rows of data that are well below or well above the median price.

I have a few other oddities and knowledge to work through, but, I do really like that I am the captain of my data here and do not have to rely on a crazily expensive service like Caspio to just serve a simple table.

If anyone would like to try it out - I have it set up in a brand new site (which still needs design work):

I will be leaving the search engine out there free with the basic data analysis numbers included, but am thinking I might put detailed analysis, charts and other info on Patreon linked pages or something so I can recoup the costs of hosting and annual plugin fees etc. But, will see how it goes.

I think most of the filtering options will be obvious to users, but the one oddity to some might be the Price vs median filter: In the Caspio version I have it set up as a drop down box where you can select options to filter on all listings less than, say, 10% under median etc.

In this tool, it seems like I can’t create formula-based filters - or I just haven’t figured it out yet. So I set that filter up as a simple range. If you wanted to only see those 10% or more under median results, for now you’d enter a -10 in the “To” field of that filter.

It does have a nicer interface. And I like the green and red touches. Looks like green is under average price and red is over average price??
Awesome work!!

Yep, the lighter green listings are at least 20% under median and darker green 20% under. Same with red for over median.

I’m planning to move some columns around and making them more visual too with buttons etc, but I’m still seeing what breaks when I shift things before I do the full blown reinstall.

I need a solid day or two to get that all done to my liking, but I also have too much stuff to do both at home and office lately, so I’m sneaking in bits here and there.

On a mobile phone many of those columns are pretty wide. But overall I really like it!

Exactly - the plugin I’m using has some great features, but because want to include the statistics in the main results I’m finding it hard to balance the number and width of columns with how much people are going to have to scroll to see it all! (In a perfect world, I do not want any horizontal scrolling, that annoys me.)

I’ll figure it out, though when I lock in some column widths it causes different display issues from just letting it adjust on the fly - especially for mobile.

I might just end up creating two completely different views: desktop and mobile, then put the bare minimum info in the mobile table view.

I’m also trying to avoid creating a scenario where you click on a listing and it opens it up in more detail on my site- while some people might prefer that, I’d rather just make the main table a 1-stop data shop and if you want the full info the rental site should be the next destination. (Aside from my eventual reference charts etc.) But, I guess I’ll see if I feel the same way when I get it all done.

When I do use it, it’s almost exclusively on desktop. I just used it on mobile to check out the new view. There’s just so much data and I would want any really excluded. It would probably be fine to leave it integrated.

This is what I do. Outside of price, dates, room type and resort, the rental info doesn’t need to be more detailed.

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve never struggled with anything in front end development as much as I have with formatting tables of columns to be responsive for multiple devices. Eventually I defaulted to displaying whatever number of columns would fit on the most common desktop monitor size. My tables on mobile are abbreviated so that only a few columns are shown(3 of what I deem are the most important) and then users can click an expand button to view the remaining data in rows nested under the ‘parent’ row. But good God has it been a nightmare.

For what it’s worth, the device split of visitors I’ve had is pretty even. 55%-60% Desktop, the rest Mobile. Technically like 1% tablet, but still.

Thanks!

You’d think it would be easier by now, but most of the same issues I fought with building html tables by hand 25 years ago seem to still be around.

You change one thing, another thing gets borked.
