Why aren’t we talking about Encanto?

We could retheme avatarland any time…. FOP could be Luisa’s song. LOL
Navi River could be Coco adventure.

Fair point. Though those two movies are part of this current trend of explaining why the villains aren’t really so bad.

Sometimes it is nice to have story that is pure good vs evil and not have the evil watered down. And I love Encanto and Moana and enjoy the Frozen movies … but I would like a few good vs evil themed stories on occasion too.

Exactly. I can (and usually do) have sympathy for criminals. But I still like a just ending.

I like these additions, but would enjoy an old formula story soon, too.

This is something that’s been in the back of my mind for a year or more! Yes, a South America part of AK to go along with Africa and Asia would be amazing!

My kids have been watching Encanto on repeat all break. I’m talking at least a half dozen times. I think they really like the songs. Every once in a while they’ll throw in Raya.

I didn’t sleep well last night.
And every time I flopped and turned I kept thinking,

But wait
If I could shake
the crushing weight
Of expectations

I think I found my theme song…

Today they are watching How To Train Your Dragon 2 which my son got them on DVD.

Same here. DS9 has listened to the soundtrack at least a dozen times in addition to rewatching the movie. He tries to sing all the parts in “We don’t talk about Bruno” which is amusing but I do secretly wonder why he doesn’t want to sing a duet with me. We rewatched Raya too! The villian in that movie was very compelling, come to think of it.

DD21 and DD19 are watching it right now!

I just listened to the whole thing on my ear buds while I made dinner.
I picked up even more with just listening vs watching.

I love this movie.

I thought the same thing about that song!

Also, we love the Dragon movies. Series too!

I guess I am on the odd man out here. Kids have watched it everyday since it came out on Disney+ and somedays twice. Animation is awesome, characters and premise start off great, but then I feel like there is no story.

It felt like half the movie was explaining who the characters were and their back story. Then they started the lose their magic because they were afraid of losing their magic? Then their magic was saved because they realized they were more important than just their magic?

I do agree with others that it was good in the difference that there was no villian or grand adventure (Onward, Moana, etc). Liked it overall and we will keep watching, just thought the conflict/resolution didn’t make sense and ended up being a little weak.

We watched the movie yesterday and I thought it was cute. Kind of a combination of Frozen, Moana, and Coco. But my kids have not asked to watch it repeatedly. I also don’t think the music is as memorable as Frozen, Moana, or Coco. Not a bad little movie, but I can understand why it didn’t do as well in theaters during the pandemic.

I actually would like to see a good good vs evil movie from Disney. They haven’t had one for a while.

I thought the music wasn’t as memorable too after the first watch, then my son started asking to listen to the songs and now I love them. I think they don’t grab you as quickly but they really grow on you.

We didn’t like it. At all. We finished it but kept talking about how weird the music was and how horrible Abuela was. She was the villain for us.

That was Roy’s nickname back in the day. Walt was often heard shouting “Silencio Bruno”

Did you make that up?

Poor Abuela. Widowed with triplets somehow managed to find a miracle candle. Even 50 years and all those loving family members later, she believed if something happened to the candle all would be lost. I think a lot of people let fear control their lives.
I see a lot of depth to the characters in this movie.
And I love the animation!!!

The music doesn’t really jive with me, so I probably won’t intentionally seek it out. It will probably be a once in a great while movie for us.

Hmmmmmm…Could be :sunglasses:
But it has a legitimate basis. Back in the very early days of the original open thread and the stories told by the King Kat (@BGK) of the Roy/Walt Follies.

Honestly, I don’t think that explains her treatment of the main character. I got the impression they didn’t know that she was in the “prophecy” that Bruno saw, unless I’m confused, which is possible because I thought that part was confusing. Why treat a family member like that when the house/candle did not provide a magical gift to one family member? She also cuts off her own son because she doesn’t like what he has no control over? I get her past, which is reminicent to the grandmother in Coco, but I actually liked Miguel’s grandmother better than Abuela.
