It would make sense to nix something for a 3-nighter. Much as we want to, we can’t do it all, especially with less time!
I don’t like dressing up and was stressing about how to be nominally pirate-bounding, so I’m honestly relieved. And my family had no idea it was a thing so they won’t know what they’re missing. ![]()
And the fireworks aren’t until like 10:30 anyway so I’m not sure if we’ll make it that long!
If you ever do need to find yourself to nominally pirate-bound: we bought black & white striped shirts for the adults on Amazon, & 3-pack of red sashes & bandanas, eye patches (DS12 joined us in the not a full costume) and called it good. Everyone just paired it with their darkest set of shorts/pants (black or navy) and we called it good.
Our October 2021 cruise was one of the first ones after DCL opened back up. It was a 4 night and pirate night and halloween night were the same night.
What?? That makes no sense! I want to dress up like a pirate AND another character! @Jeff_AZ would probably be happy that he only had to feel underdressed on one night though ![]()
Truth!
I initially had the a similar vein of thought as you, thinking “That’s a bummer that you HAVE to be a pirate for Halloween when you could be something totally different” And then I realized, oh that is one whole costume less to pack! But I dunno, the pirate stuff was pretty easy for me to squeeze in one vacuum sealed bag and we brought not just full costumes for 3 of our own kids, but also a full costume for my niece as well as all the accessories for all the 6 adults & the oldest boys in each family as well as striped shirts for DH, myself, our oldest boy and my nephew.
We are driving so I can bring a whole suitcase of costumes! (And face makeup since I’m not confident I will get a Pirate makeover.)
Jealous! The only port we can reasonably drive to is San Diego & it seems like they won’t be there much after next spring ![]()
Although, in the interest of saving some $$$ I did look up how feasible driving to Miami over Labor Day weekend instead of flying & doing WDW for a couple of days before for our September cruise. I mapped out a route and included sleeping time + 4 hours of buffer time per day (cuz traveling with kids) + time at each of the following fun spots: Marceline to see Walt’s family’s home & barn, St. Louis to see the arch, Atlanta for Coke World & it was just too tight of a timeline for me to feel comfortable doing it. Plus the cost of all those things and the gas didn’t seem like it was going to be much savings after all.
Wait, you mean DCL is discontinuing SD cruises?
SD cruises are usually in the little time from the ship arriving on the West Coast until it goes to Vancouver for Alaska and then after the Alaska season until it crosses the Panama Canal again. They’ve never had them year round.
Right, we did know that. Just the schedule that was most recently released seems to indicate there won’t be a DCL ship in San Diego after May 2024. Granted the schedule is only out until end of 2024 for all ships but the Wonder (which was released until like Feb 2025), so it could be that there will be after that point.
But, for Fall 2024 there were no San Diego cruises as the Magic won’t come back through the canal & the Wonder will be off in Australia/Pacific. The Wonder’s schedule ends with a sailing to Vancouver in Feb 2025 so it could be moving down the coast to San Diego but again they could also be positioning it for Hawaii cruises. I’m anxiously awaiting to see how the Treasure’s schedule impacts all of this & hoping for something to go to San Diego, but I’m also fully preparing for losing out on that option and just having to find other ways to get on DCL ships.
I certainly hope not, but I’m preparing for that possibility given that they didn’t schedule a ship in San Diego for the usual Fall itineraries at all in 2024. And this year the Magic doesn’t get to San Diego until after our kids’ Fall break mid-October but then leaves by early December so nothing works in terms of school breaks (and they’re already going to miss 4 days of school for our Silver Anniversary cruise) so anything we’d even consider scheduling for this fall would have to work around school breaks.
In 2019 & 2020 there was always at least one option, sometimes 2 options that worked out of San Diego with the days off my kids have in the fall so it feels like there are have been decreasing options for San Diego, even if it was already pretty limited.
@Jeff_AZ Don’t have a heart attack (like I did) when you get this email next week…

They just want to tell you to pack a costume! ![]()
I’m just so paranoid that they’re going to say we’re only going to have 2 hours in Bermuda or something.
What makes you think that? Just curious.
Haha pure paranoia!
On our RCL cruise they shorted our Coco Cay day by an hour at the last minute and a lot of people lost their minds. I was fine with it. But this cruise is so short to begin with and our entire motivation for doing it is the Bermuda port stop that I will be pretty upset if they shorten it. (It’s only 6 hours to begin with!) I have zero reason to expect that they actually will though!
I got this email this morning but luckily I did not freak out! ![]()
It should be planned around tides, and they should have a pilot already scheduled. Ships can only go into and out of the port one at a time at a certain tide level and only with a pilot on board. Barring something like that happening, you should be fine.
I was really happy I went with a ship that overnighted in Bermuda for my cruise (2 overnights actually). Gave a lot of time to explore and you didn’t have to stress about getting back to the ship in time other than the last day. I don’t think I could pick one with only hours there.
As someone who took one of the first Disney cruises that left in 2021, when I see emails like that I panic. I got so many updates for that cruise. Did another one in October 2022 when the covid testing requirements were changing, and still panicked with each email. Thought I’d gotten over that, but nope, heart stopped when I saw the email.
