Wet Sneaker Experiment, Phase II: Paper Towel v. Newspaper

As promised, today we are conducting Phase II of the Wet Sneaker Experiment. Phase I is documented here.

In Phase I, we concluded that stuffing newspaper into a wet sneaker helps it dry out significantly faster than just leaving it to sit with no other treatment. In Phase II, we are testing whether paper towels have a greater or lesser drying effect on a wet sneaker.

HYPOTHESIS

Stuffing paper towels into a wet sneaker will help it dry out as fast as, or faster than, stuffing newspaper.

METHODOLOGY

The Phase II methodology is similar to Phase I, except we are weighing the test subjects to gain a more accurate measure of water removed by the two materials.

Equal weights of paper towel and newspaper are assembled for stuffing.

This amounts to 16 sheets of paper towel and 2 double sheets of newspaper (a total of 31 grams each).

The paper is crumpled to be ready for stuffing.

The left sneaker is assigned to be the paper towel or “PT” test subject.
The right sneaker is assigned to be the newspaper or “NP” test subject.
The sneakers are initially weighed in their dry state.

The sneakers are soaked for 5 minutes. Excess water is squeezed out by hand and the sneakers are weighed in their wet state.

The sneakers are stuffed with the crumpled paper towels or newspaper.

After standing for 5 minutes, the sneakers are weighed.

The stuffing is removed and the sneakers are weighed again.

The sneakers are stuffed for a second time. After standing for 10 additional minutes, the sneakers are weighed.

The second batch of stuffing is removed and the sneakers are weighed again.

The sneakers are stuffed for a third time. After standing for 9 hours, the sneakers are weighed.

The stuffing is removed and the sneakers are weighed again.
The experiment is concluded at this time.

RESULTS

sneaker state paper towel (left) newspaper (right)
initial dry 240 241
initial wet 344 345
water gained 104 104
BATCH 1
stuffed 372 373
unstuffed 290 311
water removed 54 34
BATCH 2
stuffed 321 342
unstuffed 271 291
water removed 19 20
BATCH 3
stuffed 290 308
unstuffed 249 253
water removed 22 38
total water removed 95 92
water remaining 9 12
% water removed 91% 88%

CONCLUSIONS

Stuffing paper towels into a wet sneaker in order to dry out the sneaker works about as well as, or a little better than, stuffing the sneaker with newspaper. Although the initial water absorption is somewhat faster with paper towels, the end result is nearly the same: After about 9 hours of drying time, the paper towels removed 91% of the added water, while the newspaper removed 88%.

Interesting.

Looking forward to more data

Sounds like the paper towels may even perform better than the newspaper! Looking forward to this experiment.

Can I take credit for inspiring this?

If the paper towels work better that will be one less thing to pack. It was a wonderful accident that I tried this out in December.

Seems like so far paper towels work at least as well as newspaper. Possibly more, but i wonder about the statistical significance with only one test – odd that there was such a small variance for the second 5 minutes. Perhaps very wet things transfer moisture to paper towels more easily but after the initial moisture is wicked they are about on par with each other.

Love the photos with the scale. Legit.

Were the shoes worn after the final weighing? They felt dry enough to wear a few hours in a park?

I’m thinking the surface texture of the paper towels may have facilitated initial wicking.

Thanks!

Not quite, I think they needed a few more hours. Probably with the stuffing removed, because at a certain point (which has not been experimentally determined) they probably dry faster exposed to more air, without the stuffing.

I weighed the sneakers again this morning, a little more than 24 hours after the initial soaking. They’re still retaining some moisture, but feel pretty dry to the touch.

I have worn sneakers in the parks after just one night of drying with paper towels, and while they were very slightly damp, it didn’t soak through my socks or make my feet uncomfortable. And within a few hours walking outside they were completely dry.

This whole experiment is worth the price I pay for TP subscription.

Wait, am I supposed to be getting a cut of that?? @len??

Awesome! Thanks for the experiment!

Since I’m a runner and need to run even if it’s raining, I’ve had lots of experience with this. The great thing about newspaper is that they are free (assuming you have a newspaper delivered). What you do is remove the newspaper when it is feeling damp and replace with more. Repeat until newspaper stays dry feeling. I don’t think you’d want to waste so many paper towels on this, but, as stated, newspapers are free to me.

I wonder what a hand towel would do.

This thread, and the thread preceding it, make me so happy, I can hardly express it.

This… and the thread of pictures of animal butts.

I feel I have found my people.
