My DW put our daughter on a wooden coaster, “Screamin’ Eagle”, at my park (where I worked - Six Flags St. Louis) when she was 7 and was “technically” tall enough. I warned them that she was “too small” to ride. Sure enough when they got off DD was in tears and miserable.
It took DD about 5 years to try again when she was actually “big enough” to ride coasters. Now she’s my “ride buddy” & totally fearless! She’ll do rides that even freak me out!!!

That was my first coaster, too, and I think I was about 9. Went on with my older cousin…it was a couple of years before I tried any other coasters!!!
My very first coaster was a “wild mouse” type at Elitch Gardens in Denver. I had my eyes closed the whole time!! By the third ride I was finally brave enough to open my eyes & I’ve never closed them since!! I rode a wooden coaster that same day & fell in love with rides!!
The KidZone Pizza Company has been closed for some time now with the remodel of the area. It’s still not open, but the menu boards are up! I like the idea of beignets!
Is there any way of finding out online in advance whether and when each nighttime show is showing?
The lagoon show is always about 10 - 15 mins before park closing. It’s the “finale” for the evening.
It may not happen due to weather. Also, before the hurricane destroyed the last lagoon show there were some days - like Mondays / Tuesdays when there was no show at all. I presume that was due to lower crowd levels and time off for maintenance.
Just check the App under the “Shows” tab.
How about the Hogwarts show? I’ve been checking the show schedule most days and haven’t seen a showtime yet, so maybe “select days” means weekends only?

It runs about every 20 minutes for about the last hour or so before park close
They like to say “select nights” to avoid complaints. The Hogwarts fireworks are affected by winds as well as rain. Plus, if they have a Private Event at IOA that closes the park early this phrase “covers” them.
From what I can tell the answer to that is no.
The app (as shown on Larry’s screenshots) says ‘Select Nights’.
That’s not really much help with planning 
I wasn’t clear…my apologies… It’s every night about 60 minutes before close. It runs multiple times …about every 20 minutes

It would be helpful for planning if they stated which nights they plan to run it.
If it’s every night, then that makes planning easier.
If the weather stops it, then that’s just bad luck and folks would just need to try and plan for it another night if possible.
I’m not enjoying the uncertainty
I’ll keep an eye Hogwarts Always & the lagoon show the next few nights too see if there’s any nights it isn’t happening
I know, but . . .
I hate to criticise my favourite theme park franchise, but this is really irritating. I want to be sure of seeing both nighttime shows next week. Surely UOR knows when it is going to (aim to) show them and when it isn’t. Fricken WDW does. Just publish the fricken schedule already.
As my father was so fond of saying to me as a kid…

You can ask Universal via the app Chat. They can tell you a schedule (not very far ahead)

IMHO - They are just going on the Universal app and looking it up. I’ve gone to Guest Services in the past with the same question and watched them do it in front of me. They don’t have any additional resources that aren’t publicly available
You should go as close to the lagoon as you can. There is a viewing area near Central Park Crepes. There is no seating. If you need a place to sit there is an area off to the side of the lagoon, near Transformers the Ride. You’ll have a ‘side’ view, but it’s still good. It gets PACKED in the “official” viewing area. So get there about 30 - 45 minutes early for the best view.
For Hogwarts you are directed to an open area near the castle. It will also be packed. The TMs won’t allow you to go past the “official” show viewing area if you tell them that’s your purpose for wanting to not be in a crowded space. However, Flight of the Hippogriff runs during the show. If you tell them you are wanting to ride Hippo they’ll let you pass. Then you can stand outside that ride entry with almost no people and a “front row” seat to the show!
