Trip report: WDW solo for three delightful days

Greetings, Liners! I’m sharing my first ever trip report as I wait for my airport shuttle. I’m new here so I’ll introduce myself. I’m a middle-aged mom in Chicago who has fond memories of WDW family trips in the 70s and 80s. I’ve visited the parks a few times as an adult but I haven’t been back in many years, since I took my teen when he was little. (Neither he nor my spouse have much interest in theme parks.) I’ve worked as a middle manager for several years. I take care of a lot of people and the stress of the last few years put a strain on my mental health. I hoped that a solo Disney trip would give me the break I need. I know that at WDW I’ll feel safe and cared for, and it’s a place where I can find some rest, joy, and excitement. My priorities were to ride some old favorites, hear some live music, and try the new attractions. But mostly I looked forward to enjoying the atmosphere and letting my inner child do what she likes. And that’s what I did! It has been an awesome trip.

My itinerary:

Day 1 Sunday May 3 - Fly in, check in Coronado, MK

Day 2 Monday May 4 - AK and MK After Hours event

Day 3 Tuesday May 5 - EPCOT

Day 4 Wednesday May 6 - Check out and fly home

Day 1 Sunday 5/3 - travel day, check into Coronado, visit MK

My first win of the trip was to walk through the rainbow tunnel at O’Hare airport. This tunnel reminds me of EPCOT and I love hearing the tinkling melodies of Rhapsody in Blue, the tune United airlines uses in their commercials.

My United flight was smooth and uneventful. I watched the movie Big Bold Beautiful Life. Recommended if you like movies that try to get to the meaning of things and how to live your one wild and precious life. Magical realism is my fav movie genre!

Landed at 12:53 and purchased my first magic band (hot pink) and on a Mears bus by 1:25! Our British Mears driver looked very much like he has enjoyed a few mosh pits in his life. Love to see the aging punks of the world. Got my new magic band connected to my phone in the app in just a minute.

Coronado Springs texted that my room was ready before 1:30. They assigned me way out in Ranchos, but it was fine. It was peaceful and what’s another five minute walk to/from the bus stop? The new tower at Coronado is lovely. There were dance and cheer competitions happening, lots of girls strutting around in competition shirts, sparkles, and makeup.

Stopped halfway through my trek to my room for a quick lunch at the Big Dig pool. Children’s chicken tenders meal was just enough for me. Three free refills and 2 hours on the fountain drink too.

Continued to Ranchos to find my room. Not too bad a walk. It was cool and comfortable. I was super excited to get to Magic Kingdom in time to see the piano player on Main Street.

Arrived at Coronado Bus Stop 4 at 3:45 and a MK bus was due in ten minutes.

So glad to hear that!

As a fellow middle aged mom of t(w)eens with a demanding job and just too many balls up in the air at any given time, I similarly consider WDW solo trips an investment into my mental health - and can’t wait to live vicariously through yours!

Day 1 Sunday 5/3 continued - Magic Kingdom!

I was giddy with excitement when the bus reached the gates. I had a ticket for MK After Hours for the following day, so this evening was all about doing the stuff I wouldn’t do during the AH event. Priorities were: seeing the pianist at Casey’s Corner, browsing in the shops, dinner at Beak and Barrel, the pirate scavenger hunt, a dole whip, and riding Tiana’s and a few rides that might not be open during AH.

First I found the piano player! He was amazing. He played Once Upon a Dream for me and later, an awesome Star Wars medley for another guest.

The cast member keeping watch danced through the whole set and I did a brief waltz with her during my song.

Wandered to Liberty Square for the Christmas shop and Memento Mori. I had never gone into either! In Memento Mori a couple of teen girls were knocking on the painting and were startled to actually get a knock back. There must be an office behind that painting? So fun.

Day 1 Sunday 5/3 - Magic Kingdom continued

Rode Pirates (20 min wait), got a Dole Whip float, and explored the treehouse before my dinner reservation at Beak and Barrel.

Waited about 20 minutes outside after my reservation time until I was escorted inside and put in the map room, which is standing only. Great atmosphere and so much to look at in this place. They encourage socializing at communal tables so I chatted with a couple from South Carolina and a group from New Jersey, who had assumed I was with the South Carolina couple. Ha! If you worry about feeling self conscious traveling alone, keep in mind that folks are just going to assume you’re with the people nearby. Ordered the Hibiscus Rum Punch Royale which was tart and strong, and the Griddle Cakes with Chipotle-Braised Chicken, which was perfection. Nice balance of savory filling and sweet, chewy cornmeal cakes. There is a 45-minute, two drink max but that was enough time to enjoy the atmosphere. Fun stuff about Beak and Barrel: Every few minutes the lights would change and you’d hear eerie sounds and I wasn’t sure what was going on. So I’d ask the server, “what is happening now?” And she’d explain matter-of-factly, “ah we were being tempted by the sirens” or “argh a storm.” At one point the map room went dark to reveal messages scrawled across the walls lit by blacklight! It was a little confusing and chaotic but I was there for it!

Day 1 Sunday 5/3 - Magic Kingdom continued

Throughout this day, I got three compliments from three different cast members on my Mary Blair Fan Club t-shirt! Thanks to the person in this group that recommended Teepublic, where I got Disney shirts for this trip.

Learned that the pirate scavenger hunt activity ended by 5pm, so I’ll have to look forward to that for my next trip. Wandered over to Fantasyland and rode Small World and the Carousel since they had short waits. I wish the carousel used a real band organ instead of recorded music. It was still lovely though, especially as it was getting dark.

Since Tiana’s would be the only major ride not open for the After Hours event I decided to get in line during the first Starlight parade. Only waited about 30 minutes and thought it was super fun. I put on my rain jacket so I didn’t get too wet. It was a cool evening so I didn’t want to get soaked. After the big drop we could see the Starlight parade passing by.

By then it was almost 10pm so I rushed to see if I could find a spot for one person with a view of the castle. The best place I could find was on the bridge to tomorrowland where I could really only see the fireworks over the trees and Tinkerbell flying directly overhead. Next up, another old favorite, the peoplemover! When I was a kid it was called the Wedway Peoplemover. Isn’t it the best? So relaxing with great views.

Got an iced decaf coffee for more wandering, and got in a short line for Peter Pan. At 11pm there was a second Starlight Parade, and I got a viewing spot between two families in front of the castle. I remember the original electric parade, so hearing the original music in the finale was extra special.

On my way out I took some castle photos and picked up a popcorn mix at the confectioners, kettle corn with dark chocolate sauce, pretzels, and m&ms. It was the perfect late night snack back in my room.

What a great half-day!
I hope you slept well. CSR is the only Moderate Resort I’ve had a chance to try and we loved it. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

ETA - wait. I just realized this isn’t a live report. LOL. Well. I still hope you slept well.

So what was open for After Hours, if you don’t mind listing what you remember? I had read that Peoplemover wasn’t open, but I’m happy to see it looks like you rode that!

Day 2 Monday 5/4 part 1 - AK and resort hopping

I had been up too late the night before to rope drop and let myself sleep in until 8:30. To compensate I bought a LL multipass and chose Kilimanjaro Safari, Na’vi River Cruise, and Everest. I had already bought a single LL for Flight of Passage a few days before the trip.

Arrived by bus by 10am and headed to the back of the park. Explored the gorilla trail while waiting for my time for Kilimanjaro Safari.

The cast member at the meerkats exhibit was very informative. She told us that a group of them is called a Mob of Meerkats, and the little guy perched on a boulder watching the sky was looking for predators. The four meerkats take turns with sentinel duty! They also cannot be separated, because if one meerkat leaves it will not be accepted back into the group. So if one needs to see a vet they all go together.

I took a Wilderness Explorers Handbook and earned a sticker! Over the course of the day I stopped at 14 learning stations. I seemed to be the only adult doing this activity but the cast members were glad to tell me about their area of expertise.

At my LL time I pretty much walked right on to my safari vehicle. The attraction felt like a fun adventure. The rides that are not constrained to a track feel more realistic and exciting.

Back in Harambe the drummers were out getting the crowd dancing and clapping. I got a fruity slushy drink and lingered to watch all the happy people.

My LL for Flight of Passage was not until 11:45 so I took my time strolling over to Pandora and exploring the nature trails there. The landscape is more dramatic than I expected! Disney is so good at giving us surprising views in the distance, drawing us in.

LL wait for Flight of Passage was only 5-10 minutes until the first show room. How do I describe this ride?? It was one of the thrilling experiences of my life. When it was over I whispered an involuntary “holy s**t!” Everything works together to make the ride totally immersive. It’s amazing how the breathing and movements of the creature I was riding made me believe I was really flying. My only complaint is that the 3D glasses didn’t fit well over my glasses. I had to look directly through the center to get the 3D effect. Still loved it though!

Just past the gift shop exit I waited in a short line at Pongu Pongu for a hot pretzel with beer cheese, the Pongu Lumpia, the pineapple and cream cheese egg roll (scrumptious), and a non-alcoholic drink called the Night Blossom, which is layers of apple and desert pear limeade topped with yellow boba. Found an empty shady bench next to a waterfall to enjoy my lunch, listening to the alien animal calls and feeling a slight spray of water on my legs when the wind changed.

My next LL was for the Na’vi River Ride. It was peaceful and pretty, a nice break, but I’m glad I didn’t wait more than five minutes for it. It would be more interesting if it had a story, but the atmosphere was nice.

Next I headed over to Asia to ride Expedition Everest. The LL wait was under ten minutes. What a fantastic coaster! Enjoyed it so much I jumped into the single rider line for 20 minutes to ride it again. The second ride was even more awesome because of the anticipation. The yeti ALMOST killed us again but we made it. Another new favorite!

I wasn’t sure what to pick for my next LL as I wasn’t in the mood for shows, but the Lines app says the Feathered Friends in Flight show was worthwhile, so I went in just before it started and did actually find it funny and interesting. Lots of unique birds swooping overhead, a few bird tricks, and groan-worthy puns.

Outside the bird show a Sitar player and drummer were performing so I sat to enjoy their set, a refreshing dole whip float in hand.

I walked the jungle trek and found the bird area to be the most interesting. So many exotic birds to see up close. A cast member told me about an app called Merlin that helps bird watchers identify birds and their calls.

I wandered the Discovery Island trails a bit and I asked a cast member where I could find characters from Up, but they were done for the day, unfortunately.

I really wanted to see the Boardwalk area and experience the Skyliner so I took a bus from AK to Yacht Club. Took a ferry across the lake to Boardwalk, and got something to eat at the Boardwalk Deli. They have a vegetarian muffeleta sandwich at the deli, which was so good. Enjoyed it on a shady bench looking at the lake.

Walked over to the Skyliner station and took a ride to the Riviera. Saw the mosaics and the lake.

From the Riviera, I hopped on a bus to Magic Kingdom for the After Hours event, which is 10pm-1am, but you can enter starting at 7pm. I arrived at the gates about 8pm.

@qwertySC I slept ok! The room was very comfortable. I remember waking up a few times briefly but I’m not sure why.

Day 2 Monday 5/4 continued - Magic Kingdom After Hours event

I got into the park around 8:15. They had a separate entry gate where they were distributing wristbands. I’ve always wanted to explore Main Street more, and since I was on my own, I could! A new place to me was the firehouse with the patches from fire departments all over the country. As I headed past the castle I noticed a cast member pushing a garbage can on wheels that had bubbles streaming out of it. The bubble machine trash can had a cast member name tag that said “Bubble-E.” Does anyone know the story behind this? So random and weird!

I had not realized that I could continue using my LL multipass when I entered Magic Kingdom! So I snagged a 9:30pm LL for Haunted Mansion which had been closed for two days. It’s my favorite ride in MK so I wanted to get sure I got to ride it at least once.

While I was waiting I checked out the Country Bear Jamboree at 8:45 because why not. I was curious about the changes. It was actually pretty cute, though the bear on the swing never descended. Awkward.

Outside in Frontierland the Starlight parade hadn’t started yet so I found a spot for one person to sit on the curb so I could enjoy it again.

At my HM LL I walked right in to the stretching room. I was pleased when the ride paused for about a minute during my favorite scene, the ballroom. As a kid I was captivated by the dancers spinning. (Solo tip: the hitchhiking ghosts work better if you sit on one side of your doom buggy.)

After Hours started at 10pm and cast members started checking for wristbands at ride entrances. At 10:20pm Space Mountain was literally a walk-on; I got from the entrance to my seat of the coaster without pausing! This ride is still thrilling but kinda jarring…I don’t know. Maybe I’m getting too old for a coaster that is so tight and loud. I think I enjoy the queue theming and music more than the actual ride.

At 10:35pm I got in line for Tron and the wait was about 30 minutes. Would a LL have been shorter? Standby was 110 minutes earlier today. But I understand why. What an incredible ride! Even the system they designed for the lockers was impressive.

I grabbed my free popcorn, ice cream sandwich, and a can of soda from one of the event kiosks and walked to the front of the castle. It was five minutes before the 11:30 Enchantment fireworks and found a spot to spread my blanket on the ground with a full view of the show! It was gorgeous and inspiring.

Next I walked over to BTMRR and found it was a walk-on. It had just reopened the day before after refurbishment and was still the great, galloping coaster we know, but it felt smoother and had a few new features in the theming.

Jungle Cruise was another walk-on! Skipper Hillary rocked the vocal drag. She cracked me up.

At 12:25am I got in line for Seven Dwarves Mine Train. Another first for me! At 12:30am they announced a pause in operations. There was only half an hour left of the event, so I wasn’t sure if I should stay in line. I decided to stay. While waiting I coached everyone around the barrels to spin all seven to make Snow White appear. Teamwork makes the dream work! At 12:40am we heard an announcement that trains were running again and everyone cheered. They took another 5 minutes to test it and when they starting boarding people again there were more cheers! At this point I thought it would be my last ride of the night. When I checked the app at 12:40am I saw that Tron had a 60 min wait posted but everything else was 5-15 min except for Haunted Mansion, which was at 13 minutes. 7DMT was a blast.

When I got out it was 12:53am. Maybe enough time to fit in one last ride?? I speedwalked through an empty Fantasyland to Haunted Mansion. Got there at 12:55am and there was absolutely no one in the queue. I’ve never actually felt afraid in HM, but when I approached the house with no one around, it felt ominous. One dour cast member at the door waved me in silently. I stepped into the house alone and crept into the extending room. One couple came in behind me. After that moment of pitch dark, the three of us were startled to see the cast member standing at attention right next to us! The doors swung open and we approached our doom buggies in silence. It was a creepier ride knowing most of them were empty!

It was a great ending to my night. At 1:15am folks were taking castle pictures on their way out. All the shops and eateries on Main St were closed.

I waited a while for my resort bus, got back to my room and passed out at 2am. The next day was my EPCOT day!
