I saw Mickey Views mention that in his review of the ride. I tend to agree with him that the joke was a poor one. Came across as cheesy (at least as acted…which is surprising, because I’m usually fine with Chris Pratt’s acting of the roles I’ve seen him in) at best. And for those unfamiliar with Epcot from the 80s, the joke falls flat. For those who ARE familiar with it, it DOES seem like Disney is unintentionally acknowledging that their best rides are now gone.
Great point. I wish they had moved the ride system to HS (which could use another attraction).
My understanding is that ANY Marvel character that was not ALREADY in use at Universal is fair game. This eliminates the X-men and Spidey, but actually opens the door to a very large number of Marvel characters.
Here’s to hoping-
“Therefore, the ragtag heroes aren’t technically part of the Avengers or the Fantastic Four, and aren’t already featured at Universal’s Superhero Island. This means the Guardians are free game for Walt Disney World to implement into the parks hence Cosmic Rewind and other appearances of the Guardians, such as short-term meet and greets at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and live performances at EPCOT.”
Not just X men and Spidey, we’ve met Cap there too and I think there were others too but maybe not.
Oh, yes. I wasn’t being all inclusive in that list.
I don’t think Shang-Chi is able to be used in WDW. As long as any single Avenger is featured at UOR beyond an incidental appearance (there are several), no members of the Avenger family or any villains associated with them can be used. Who is an Avenger is defined first by the comics over MCU, and a comic issue exists where Shang-Chi was officially recruited to be an Avenger by Iron Man and Cap.
GotG in both MCU and comics are only allies to the Avengers, so there was the loophole. Pretty much anyone else the average fan would have any recognition of is locked by UOR under the terms. There was apparently enough gray area with Dr. Strange to allow for a costumed character in HS briefly when his first movie came out.
All sides of these agreements/contracts must get headaches trying to work this all out

But…I think the specific CHARACTER has to have been a part of UOR, not the “group”. Being an “Avenger” wouldn’t disqualify a character being being at Disney…unless that particular Avenger has been part of UOR.
Another reason I have issue with the Guardians franchise. How much do you remember being REALLY invested in at 8 years old (when he was abducted, 1988) to carry on into your adult life?
He carries a picture of Michael Knight as his “dad” (even though Knight Rider would have ended 2 years prior), he makes a Jackson Pollock joke (what 8 year old would even heard of that?) And now he supposedly calls out a ride by name having only, seemingly, gone once. I was at Disney when I was 10, LOVED/Hated that ride (cause it got stuck during the imax “flying over new york” part), and even I couldn’t remember the name 20 years later.
I guess that’s my whole issue with the Guardians. It’s overtly obvious Generational pandering that doesn’t actually serve the story and is used for jokes.
NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
Here’s the contract section. That’s how I’m interpreting it as a layman anyway.
EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI – ANY OTHER THEME PARK IS LIMITED TO USING CHARACTERS NOT CURRENTLY BEING USED BY MCA AT THE TIME SUCH OTHER LICENSE IS GRANTED. [FOR PURPOSE OF THIS SUBSECTION AND SUBSECTION IV, A CHARACTER IS “BEING USED BY MCA” IF (X) IT OR ANOTHER CHARACTER OF THE SAME “FAMILY” (E.G., ANY MEMBER OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR, THE AVENGERS OR VILLAINS ASSOCIATED WITH A HERO BEING USED) IS MORE THAN AN INCIDENTAL ELEMENT OF AN ATTRACTION, IS PRESENTED AS A COSTUMED CHARACTER, OR IS MORE THAN AN INCIDENTAL ELEMENT OF THE THEMING OF A RETAIL STORE OR FOOD FACILITY;
Makes for an AWESOME soundtrack though ![]()

- admittedly my son is the marvel comic expert in the family & by no means have I read enough comics to speak with any authority … again this is a pipe dream thread on ride updates but the character is not currently involved at Universal isn’t that part of the main deal? Not just Avenger status but Universal Status?
I have no idea how to interpret that image

just me pointlessly raging.
nothin’ to see here
Ah. I wasn’t aware of that line. The “Avengers” is a big group!
side note, can we take a moment and realize that grown adults, with likely no personalities, had to hash this out, in a legally binding way, about superheroes. ![]()
I guess it would depend what was going on for you at that time in your life.
I dunno if this should be blurred or not.
For me, that’s when my parents split. I remember an awful lot about everything from that time period, quite vividly. The last trip we took as a family just before that (to DLR, actually - and I remember 20K under the sea SO much); my first cassette (interestingly, as Quill hangs onto a cassette for dearl life); overhearing my dad talking to his BFF in the basement, through a vent in the floor, about building me a dollhouse)… I could go on but you get my point. I remember so much from that time. I don’t know if it’s the 8yo thing or that my world was shifting in monumentally heartbreaking ways that stick with me even to today.
I would expect that had a parent died, as his mother did, I would have had a similar reaction to holding onto everything possible from “the before”. So I think it’s 100% realistic that he would hang onto that stuff into adulthood.

And. Based on his fascination, I wouldn’t be surprised that he didn’t do what he could to feed his interest. Like Ariel. With about as much accuracy, too.
Footloose is the greatest movie of all time.
