Seeking opinions on tipping

Like I said…

It honestly took way longer than I expected.

This is always how it ends though.

I’ve worked at both table service and fast food. I would have to disagree with you there. Fast food can be hard, but you’re not working several tables that are at different stages of their meal. Being a waitress was very hard and if I had to work in food service again, I would definitely pick fast food.

Prices at chains already vary by location. They’d why I like menus tell you pick your location for pricing.

I don’t know why we keep having these discussions honestly. Tipping is an American thing. It’s what we do. We don’t need to be constantly criticized for it and told how awful we are as people because we allow it to go on. :woman_shrugging: Just my opinion of course, but

And no I don’t like Trump but the one with Biden in it also had the F word and this is not the Uncensored thread so I refrained from using it.

Oohhh, need tips on doing this stealthily. I may have a realtive by marriage who is demanding and is proud of their 18% tip. I could live with 18% of the post-tax total normally (equals 20% pre tax) but not the way they make people hustle. But I got caught dropping an extra $20 and they were super offended.

I always over tip bell service because they are in charge of my bags. Drives DH crazy because I generously tip when dropping off and picking up. And really a lot if they bring everything to my room.

On travel day I always have singles in one back pocket (if it is just me) and fives or 10s (depending on the size of my party) in the other. Lets me be quick - they will always pause when they realize you want to tip and are thankful.

I tip them when they handle my bags.

I have the bladder of a 6 year old girl. No one ever bats an eye if I decide I need to ‘use the restroom’ on our way out the door.

That plus, I’d just call them a cheap SOB anyway if I was caught.

This was early in our marriage, but it is hard to call someone that after they pay for your meal!

To other points: there is a restaurant I go to thay tells everyone - we will apply a 20% service charge to your total. It’s on their website, they tell.you at the hostess stand. You are in no way expected to tip, in fact there may not be a space for that on the bill. This solves the problem of seeing the $14 burger at $19, provides a stable salary for staff, and takes any “performance” out of it. It is kind of nice.

When I plan my budget for WDW, I calculate food costs, taxes and tip. It is a known thing that I will pay this and it is a line on the spreadsheet. I am not caught off gaurd that they I am expected to tip.

I still remember going to elementary school and how we were going to change to the metric system. :disappointed: Something that could have been done completely out of control of the general public with government and business buy-in. And where are we today, some 45 years later? Still mostly using the “standard” system of measurement, except in scientific/medical areas because they need to communicate easily with the rest of the world.

We really don’t like to change things. Unless of course it’s taking rights away from people, then we are A-OK!! blurring for political snark.

Why am I being asked to do math at all. Why is there not a single total. End of. Other countries manage this system quite well.

I haven’t said I want it to change. I’ve said it’s idiotic. It is. And Americans do like it?

Do you tip the bank teller? They’re in charge of your cash. Or your kids teachers? They look after your kids. Or your surgeon? They look after you.

No but we sue them if they mess up.

Because dentists are transparent about their pricing. This is how much a crown costs. Not, here’s a much lower figure but if I do a good job, toss me an extra 20%. And, by the way, the 20% is compulsory even though we pretend it is optional.

Tipping is like resort fees. And I know you people hate those. And convenience fees.

I’m with Biden on this one. Fair, transparent pricing. One all-inclusive price.

You are beating the proverbial horse on this. You can say what you want, I suppose. But I have no qualms with the system…and actually would be opposed to changing it.

Now I’m agreeing with @sanstitre_has_left_the_building and disagreeing with @ryan1 !

:woman_facepalming:

I hate resort fees and tipping! I want to change both!

Why are Americans so worried about restaurant workers struggling to pay their rent and literally giving them money to help them do so, but so opposed to other, frankly socialist, measures like universal healthcare, paid parental and so on?

Why does this topic generate such passion?

Because you turn, frankly, downright offensive.

You might be surprised at the U.S. poll results on such measures—as long as you don’t call them socialist!
