Good article on tipping in today’s NY Magazine:

I was going to say something about counter service tipping. I bet most people don’t tip counter service, and that’s ok. But I do because I have the means to and I feel good about doing it. I usually only tip 10-15% (minimum $1) for counter service. Especially at someplace like an ice cream parlor where they’re doing something strenuous. If only 10% of guests tip at 10%, that helps but they’re not making more than an accountant or nurse or lawyer or whatever.

My husband is not an avid tipper either, sticking with a straight 20% (easier to calculate than 15%) and $2 bag.
He ascribes much more to the train of thought that businesses should pay the wages.

That said, as a large family that doesn’t drink, but does have food allergies, he has become a sturdy dinner table tipper. We do put a larger burden on a server than most.

Additionally, post-lockdown living has made us both far more appreciative how how much the service industry had been hit. I don’t know how long our generosity will last, but at this point we still feel like we are extravagantly grateful to be living again.

Because as a Brit I don’t understand tipping, I suspect I veer wildly from over-tipping so as to be sure not to cause offence, to not tipping at all because I didn’t realise you were supposed to. Bags and bell services for example… does $2/bag include carrier bags with the odd soft toy? Or just suitcases? I remember one split stay where the arrival at the second hotel must have had about 25 bags - mostly souvenirs, food etc in carrier bags with 5 suitcases. Should I have tipped $50?? (I think I tipped $20.) Does that go to both the people who take the bags and the people who deliver to the room? Or do you mentally split between them?!

Another example… last trip the AC broke in the room. I called an engineer who duly sorted. After I’d thanked him and he’d left, I suddenly thought he had been hanging around rather at the end - and that maybe I was supposed to have tipped him?! But it’s not my fault the AC broke - why would I tip for them to fix it?!

It’s stressful

Yes it is!

Halfway teasing - but yes - if someone has a gazillion bags each with one or two items in it, they should certainly pay more than someone with three neatly packed bags well proportioned.

I typically only hand the money off when I hand the bag off. For our instances pick up is usually no contact.

I would not be tipping someone for fixing my broken AC. If they were kind and helpful, I would mention their name on a comment card.

I think tips kind of max out at $20 unless you are calling a moving van.

No need to tip here, IMO. Maintenance is their full time job, they don’t interact with guests too often and draw a salary accordingly.

You’re supposed to tip movers?? Oops. Growing up overseas means tipping isn’t inherent to me except at restaurants, salons, and valets/bag people so I feel like I probably don’t tip in some situations I’m technically supposed to. And most of my small bills go to buying newspapers from the homeless people on my route to work. But I always forget about Housekeeping :see_no_evil:

I don’t think most home service providers expect tips. But I usually tip people who do physical labor at my home who are not sole proprietors or professionals like plumbers.

  1. $20 a day (and I just realized I bought way too many tip holders because we’re going to be in the villas). I once tipped $40 for one day when she did perfect service and a playtime set up with my son’s stuffed animals. They had quite the tea party while we were at the parks!

  2. I don’t usually because I’m normally out of the room if they do, but if I’m there…I still didn’t tip.

Now I feel mean.

  1. (for reals this time) $5 a bag if hubby tips, flat $40 for 3 carry-ons and 3 backpacks if I tip.

4.We tip…a lot. In Vegas, the first thing both of us learned was to take care of those who take care of you.

Exceptional service gets exceptional benefits. We once made our Nobu server cry with happiness when he gave us the best dinner of our lives. Most times we’re welcomed back with hugs and long stories catching up. Bull and Bear gave us a standing reservation for both the then current and upcoming trips.

When dining solo, I tip 25-50% depending on service.

ETA the Nobu server came in especially for the 3 of us Christmas Eve. He was scheduled off but the manager called him to let him know we were coming in. We gave him a 4 figure tip for making time for us and giving us an unforgettable 3 hour dining experience.

This honestly blows my mind living in the UK. How has it gotten to a point where the end user is expected to essentially pay someone’s wage in the US and the employer has absolutely no responsibility or consequences for this so they just get off Scot free?! Absolute madness

Welcome!

I’ll deal with whatever system we have here, but an overhaul might take a movement of enough people to stop tipping to set things in motion, hurting workers in the short term to put more responsibility on employers in the long term.

Growing up I had always heard you don’t tip the owner. Employees get tips, but not owners.

As in @Jeff_AZ’s counter service example. If the owner is serving the counter customers, he would not be tipped. His employees serving customers at tables would be tipped.

Or a barber shop. I suppose that would apply to a car service as well. If it’s the owner driving, no tip. Or does it no longer matter if you’re paying the owner?

Valet I only haphazardly dealt with once and was too frazzled to remember to tip. Long story short, large city trying to get to the hotel with DD in tow, no parking available without walking 3 blocks rolling a suitcase easily a target. Say forget it and end up using a valet. Guy threw me off asking if we’d like help with bags and such. It’s not normal for me to have someone else park my car or help with bags. Kid pointed out after we got up to the room I didn’t tip him. Ended up back out front waiting for the guy

Tipping survey with 10 questions and then you can see how you compared to the average. I was average in all but one.
