I’ve heard about these horror stories. Since you’re now pretty much “trapped” in their building, they seem to want to pile on all of the upsells, and they won’t take no for an answer. There was one reviewer that said they had to either buy the insurance, or cancel the reservation. Of course, the insurance made the price much worse than anything on the airport.

YMMV but many, many years ago I rented from Dollar, and on the day I was due to return the car, I got a flat. I called the rental company. I was alone on a business trip and they told me to change the tire and return the car. My customer had to help me change it and I almost missed my flight.

I’ve not booked from a discount car rental service since and for a really, really long time I asked the rental desk what I should do if I had a flat before I took possession of the car.

My 8 days right now (last Saturday - Saturday) it was cheaper to get an electric, but by $50 or so total. I have a Mustang EV at home and wasn’t sure about charging availability so I didn’t get it. Also, my husband who has motion sickness gets horribly ill in my car as does my daughter who doesn’t.

The last (!) off site I booked tried to give me an old car with 2 bald tires. I refused, eventually they took us back to the Terminal.

Question of the Day:

I have a flight that arrives at around 11pm. I am renting from Alamo. What should I know about the check-out process for late night arrivals?

Shouldn’t be a problem. All the namebrand car rentals are usually at their desk until midnight. However, you can doublecheck by going to their website find that location. It should list the hours have a magical trip!

Electric cars were cheaper for a while… I think because nobody wanted them… Recently the rental companieshave been selling them off, I’m not sure why they’re now in an outrageous price.

You should sign up to be an insider and check in before you arrive so that you have direct to vehicle privileges. Then, get off the plane, and go to the vehicle.

If you’re coming into MCO, I think most of the rental car companies are staffed 24/7

I’m pretty sure there will be someone there all night, but also agree with @OBNurseNH to sign up with alamos program and go right to the car. I rent through Costco and will only do Alamo at Mco anymore because of that.

I rent Alamo through Costco. If you are an Insider, you can check in and then set up direct to your car. When you get off the plane you go directly to the. Garage. There will be a podium there for someone to direct you.

They are open 24/7. After a certain time, you go to the Alamo stand in the rental car garage. Remember when I got locked out of my rental car last year? I was at MCO at 2 AM! Alamo had a number of staff there.

This has been my experience. Have been at MCO renting a car at both 12am midnight and 6am wee morning hours and there’s always been someone around at one of the desks. If might not be at Alamo directly, tbut someone at one of the desks will be doing Alamo’s. And if you go direct to the garage as mentioned, there’s also someone at the stand there all hours to direct you to the right row to grab a car from and help you grab a car seat if you rented one.

I was going to mention this. Sometimes after hours, there may be a single person who is working the desks for several rental companies. I think one time there was one lady helping with National, Enterprise, and Alamo all at a single desk.

If you have a program similar to National Emerald Aisle (I use National, usually, but most companies have something similar) and you rented from the Emerald Aisle rather an a specific car category, you can just go straight to a vehicle and bypass the counters entirely no matter what time it is. (This has the added benefit of, often, though not guaranteed, you will have vehicles available that would be in a higher price category/larger than what you paid for! We did it once where we ended up with a minivan, which would have cost quite a bit more had we BOOKED a minivan category.)

I have also seen an airport (don’t think it was MCO) where even if you booked a specific category, you still bypassed any desk and when you got up to the garage area, they had this stand with keys to specific vehicles marked envelopes, so you can just pick up your specific key and go find your vehicle.

At Alamo when you go to the garage they direct you to a row of cars. You can pick any car. The keys are in all of the cars.

This has been my experience with most of the rental companies. Only on my most recent rental (was that dollar?) was I directed to a specific vehicle (rather than row of, to choose from); the keys were in that vehicle as well.

MCO was a one time thing as we’d flown vs drove bc DH didn’t come. My next anticipated rental is an off-airport Enterprise. I’ll call before we go so I know what their routine is. :+1:

Can you teach me this magic?

It’s still there for my dates now

I literally check it (priceline) every single solitary day - and sometimes more than once a day - once I am locked in

For clarity my filters are ALWAYS:

  • Car On Airport
  • Free Cancellation
  • Pay Later

Also, when it’s just me or just me and DH we will take anything (so dealer’s choice is fine)

With the four of us it’s always a Standard SUV or larger

Minivans will always run super high
