Possible changes to DVC bookings

But you’re someone who has access to that information.

Why would a broker give access to DVC? I guess either DVC says “you let us have that info or we take you to court” or they hack their way into the broker’s systems.

A broker wouldn’t, but the reservation itself is linked to a membership. All they would have to do is audit membership numbers - if they see a really really high number of reservations associated with a membership number, they could look more into it and, yes, identify the names on the ressies.

Then again, maybe it’s impossible as you suggest

Here’s an example:

I called in recently to add a guest to my upcoming reservation. Without my even giving the person any information, solely by using the phone number I was calling from, they were able to pull up my membership and reservation information.

Something like that is what I envision

I’m definitely seeing that. It probably took me longer to notice since I almost always book 1 bedrooms.

This thread just made me go back and look to see if I could adjust anything for October but I can’t other than cross my fingers for my waitlists and move around more than I want to if neither comes through. There’s worse things.

I am booked for September at OKW, home resort. As soon as 7mos opened, I looked to see if I could move it to anywhere else, and my dates were already booked up (I could get a night here or there but not the whole time I will be there, and DH doesn’t like splits). We never used to have a hard time moving a booking at 7 mos but it has become damned near impossible.

I’m not understanding something. …

Max at Member Services is tasked with looking at broker sites and their listed reservations for rent.

Max sees that the broker has 10 reservations for an AKL club level studio for November.

Max sees two are for Nov 8th to 12th. He checks the DVC reservations and finds there are 4 matching ones.

Now what?

He has no way of knowing which of these are the two listed ones. Does he?

Are you saying he could see the membership or reservation number from the listing?

That’s crazy! And very frustrating.

Fortunately for us we prefer splits and we have 2 home resorts. So I do exactly the same, but since we plan for a split and start with both resorts we have way more wiggle room. No luck even with only a 1 night adjustment on either end this year though.

I am talking more about auditing by member number
Returning a search for members with more than X number of reservations per year
Cross reference by name because some people have more than one membership number
Filter by date/room type/resort
Then when they identify member numbers that appear “suspicious” for renting (ie same membership number and/or member name associated with the same dates/resort room type) review for names of guests on reservation.

I read an article that states Disney is targeting owners with 3000+ points that regularly and frequently book up the most popular times and consistently change the reservation name at a later date.
This isn’t from Disney of course. So this could totally be speculation on the authors part.

I do think Disney is targeting the dedicated rental market, or at least they should be focused on that. While I have taken advantage of these listings, if they didn’t exist, finding inventory wouldnt be such a problem in the first place.

I don’t know about this. I wonder how the price per point averages for dedicated rentals vs requested dates rentals. I feel like $20-$24 per point is the going rate. Do dedicated get much more than that?

One of the brokers regularly has confirmed reservations at $30 per point. Of course they don’t break it down, they just give a total price. That alone makes me refuse to even consider ever using them.

Max can see exactly who the guest are on each reservation…

Max can also see the 4 contracts and how those members have previously used their reservations. For example *the smith family has a AVK club level during those dates- the smith family comes every year during that season , the jones have 2 reservations that month AVK & 6 days later at BLT Max can see they have a cruise booked also , the McGillicuddy contact had reservations during marathon weekend in Jan for the Blake family, Spring Break reservation was used by the Griffith family, & thier July trip went to the Washington family

It would not be all that difficult to watch for name on changes on those 4 hypothetical reservations.

When we link reservations through my Disney experience we give them a ton of information about us and our guests and they definitely track all of it.

  • honestly I don’t think it would take much. If they decide to spank one or two mega-renters with even just strongly worded letter they will have social media buzzing. Probably just enough that once word gets around, and with Disney it always does, the resale market will see an increase in contracts.

1000% agree with this, and this is what has screwed up the marketplace.

I am a seriel modifier! Dates, locations, I’m terrible. Especially locations. The only walking I do is booking the first possible date I would stay, and then modifying it to my prefered date. Usually that only takes one modify.

I was wondering about this… do you have a different mbr no. for each DVC contract? I know ppl have multiple contracts.

You can have multiple contracts in a membership, as long as they are titled in exactly the same way (same names, same order etc) AND they all have the same use year.

If they have a different use year they will be under a different membership. Ditto with contracts with different deeded titles.

I have two membership IDs. One for our SSR contract and another for our Boardwalk contracts. Two different use years…but the two Boardwalk contracts are under the same membership number because they have identical use years.

So three contracts, but two membership IDs.

It depends-

So if one person has multiple contracts they have one membership number. The contract owners need to be the exact same on each contract to remain under one membership.

From what I understand If you buy an additional contract with someone else than that contract generates an additional membership number. Researched this a bit as my kids are now grown and starting their own families and we have had the discussion of adding on vs adding them to my timeshares. Again this is Disney specific timeshare rules.

For example- I own 2 contracts at OKW. I have one membership number. If I were to add on with my oldest son at Aulani it would be a different membership number. He would not have access to the original membership. If I added on at OKW with my younger son it would generate a third membership number and he would not have access to the original OKW account.

If I wanted to keep just one membership number in this scenario both kids and spouses need to be added to the original membership - than add on. Everyone has access to everything. For us that’s way too much of a potential cluster. Other timeshare programs allow for additional contacts to be added with additional owners DVC does not.

What is nice about having one memebership number with multiple contracts is that those points can all be pooled for bookings sevem months or later. Plus you have one use year to keep track of. If you have two memebership nimbers you have to call guest services in order to be able to use those points together
But I can have four waitlists and buy 24 extra points twice. I can’t imagine having more than two membership numbers unless it was part of my job!

Recently I gave 8 points to a stranger b/c they were going to expire before we could use them. I’m sorry I didn’t think about offering them here. It shows how little I come here now  I’m on hateful FB more b/c there are some extremely helpful sailing groups there, but I wanted to ask, how would I do that here? I’m sure it will happen again b/c our life has become unpredictable (controlled by weather & Schengen) Fair Winds :sailboat:

I’ve both rented to people here and given away a few points too.

You could simply start a thread here in the DVC section. And then use personal messages for communication.

This thread has confirmed some of my reservations about buying into DVC and future availability at 7 and even 11 months. Can someone please re-post a link to DVC Availability tables. I know I have seen them posted before but can’t seem to find them. Do these tables show current availability, or just historical? I am concerned about the impact/trend that these large DVC contracts for rental income are having on availability for smaller owners buying for personal use. :grimacing: Thanks!
