Magic Band +Transferable?

OK, OK, I have searched the forum and found lots and lots of posts saying that Magic Bands are not transferable and that is what I always thought. As a WDW family, we are used to that. But, we are headed to Disneyland and I would love to be able to buy some less expensive MB+ on eBay. Risky? Maybe. But I was reading on Undercover Tourist and they gave me some hope. I’m not sure how it could really be different. Am I reading it wrong? Any experience with this?

They say:

Can I Change the Ticket or Magic Key That My MagicBand Is Linked to?

Yes! At Disneyland, you can assign a MagicBand+ to any ticket or Magic Key pass on your Disney account. You can reassign a MagicBand from a ticket or pass to a different one in your app. You can also unlink it from your account and link it to a different account. This is different from Disney World, where the MagicBand is linked to a person and cannot be unlinked. You can assign and link or unlink MagicBand+ in the MagicBand+ section on the Disneyland app.

That being said, a MagicBand can only be linked to one ticket or pass at a time. If not everyone in the group has a MagicBand, the people without a band can use their phones instead.’

Ok do not take this as legal advice, but I could actually see this working.

At WDW, a MB+ is linked to a profile. At Disneyland, their technology is not so sophisticated, so you link your MB+ to a ticket. Other tickets linked in your app do not automatically link to your MB+.

This leads me to believe that Disneyland’s system would not be able to tell or care if your MB+ was once linked to a different person’s account, because they are not checking for that. Their system is not cross checking your profile to make sure you are the user who purchased / assigned the tickets. Rather, tickets are assigned based on the name entered at the time of purchase / use and the photograph taken at time of first entry.

So proceed with caution, but if I had to guess, I think it just might work.

I like going to the source. Here’s what it says on the Disneyland site:

Link worked for me - here is a screenshot.

Thank you! Not sure why I can’t get to it. I tried to search for it and every way I find it, the link doesn’t work.

So, I feel like they are saying yes, it’s possible and ok. Is that what others are getting from it?

Interestingly, here is the same FAQ for Disney World:

So in short, WDW’s system is different than Disneyland.

Yep! That’s what I’m getting from it.

I have done this in DL. I unlinked one of mine from the DL site, relinked it and assigned it to another person. It worked fine.

I have too. I really wish WDW would work the same way.

Thank you for the feedback! I consider this a win! Does anyone know what happens when WDW comes into play? DH is not convinced. There are bunches of unlinked bands for sale, but we won’t know if/where they have been used. He’s saying we may be able to use at DLR but what about WDW? I’m thinking there is still a potential that it will be locked on to someone else at WDW if we actually buy a used, unlinked one.

You cannot re-assign a MB at WDW. So yes if you buy a used one that was linked to someone at WDW you will not be able to use it there but you can still use it at DLR.

Adding an anecdote. My DD is a CM, she used to have an AP with a MB+ linked to it. Even though she is the same person she can not link that MB to her CM main gate pass so it is essentially useless because she no longer has an AP.

That

That is terrible!

Can I share a win that others might not care about? I got 3 unlinked magic band + for $15 total. It says they were only used on one trip for one day. It was through a bid process, but the bids were only 50 cents higher each time. So with tax and shipping just under $15 for the set. Included boxes and chargers for each. It helped that two were sized to kids, which I can still wear. Very excited. I have them in hand and they are charging. Practically new. Fingers crossed that it works out. Worth a $15 risk to me. :crossed_fingers: Thanks for the info about using them at DLR. Any obvious scams I should be considering?

I purposefully wear them in kid size! They are less likely to fall off my tiny wrists.
I just had to return a bracelet with the little opening because it would just fall off my wrist and it was too thick to squeeze smaller

Tiny wrists are both good and bad ha ha

I also like to coordinate my MB to my outfit so this is a good thing to remember for Disneyland trips cuz you can find things on eBay in not currently available characters. My caution would be if you want the light up effects I have noticed after a couple of years these stop working (the mb+ become un-chargeable) but you can still use them for LL and park tap ins etc.

Well, according to DL the bands are deactivated but not unlinked. UGH! The seller was the same name that was on the bands. So, I’ve asked her to contact customer service to unlink them. Fingers crossed!

OK it worked! So for future readers of this thread, the seller called DL support to unlink the bands. She had used them at WDW. I was then able to call to link them via Disneyland. She said she first chatted with WDW support and they gave her a hard time.

Was it actually necessary to unlink them? Like, did you try pairing them or linking them to your ticket, and it gave you an error?

Because I actually think it would be possible to have them linked to your ticket even if it was linked to someone else’s profile. I could be wrong - if it wouldn’t show up in your Disneyland app, that would be a problem.

I am not positive that the cast member was right. But that’s what they told me. I called because I kept getting an error when trying to link them. Reset them, reset the phone, etc. It would find the band but give me an error that it couldn’t see my data. When I called the second time they were able to link them. When I called the first time, the CM said she couldn’t do it because they were still linked. But, I’m not sure that my ability to link them was ever improved because they did it instead of me. I left off one because I’m not sure which of the dudes in my house wants it. So, I’ll try it myself when they pick and report back.

Edited because my phone is against me.
