Favorite Fl Keys Activities

Planning a four day trip down to Florida Keys. I’ve never been there before. No specific plans for where to stay yet. Any favorite activities anyone has down there?

Fun. I’ve always wanted to go. James will be excited about the diving. It’s supposed to be fabulous

This books up months in advance. @heathernoel is going to the Keys for spring break and can tell you what she found.

Yes it does. I wasn’t sure when she is planning to go. Lots of dates open May and beyond.

The aquarium in Marathon is relatively small, but is very hands on. We fed turtles, stingrays, and lobsters and also purchased the add-on to feed the nurse sharks. The kids (ages 9 and 7) loved it and DW and I enjoyed it too.

It’s a couple hour drive from one end of the keys to the other so probably makes sense to start thinking about which part of the keys you are going to stay at. I’ve stayed at Key West (all the way at the end and farthest from Miami) and Marathon (in the middle). Key largo is at the end closest to Miami.

The highlight for me on one Keys trip was the latrine at Fort Zachary Taylor. It’s a long trough and I could just see miscreants lighting paper to float along exploding at gassy points.

I think they’ve blocked off the latrine area tho.

Well after you did that too many times, can you blame them? :boar:

I could blame them but perhaps not logically

Oooh, thank you for this! We were going to stop at Crane Point Nature Center to stick our feet in the pond with the Pedicure fish, and this gives us more to do in Marathon!

We are staying in Key Largo and Key West, but want a few stops on the drive down.

Otherwise, my trip is a repeat of much of @ThorKat

We did
1 night in Key Largo
1 night in Marathon
3 nights in Key West

I would drop the Marathon and add a night in Key Largo if were to do it again though.

Dry Tortugas is pretty great. I also liked the Hemingway House.

Okay so far I have booked 2 nights Key Largo:
Booked mangroves kayaking and I want to do some paddle boarding there as well while DH scuba dives.
Visit Marathon
2 nights Key West:
Hemingway house
Butterfly house
Yankee Freedom ferry to Dry Tortugas

Still happy to hear any suggestions!

We haven’t been in about 15 years, but a few of our favorite Key West things were:

Sunset at Mallory Square
Conch fritters from basically anywhere.
Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower (DH and I got married there).
The kitties at the Hemingway House
Breakfast at Blue Heaven
The Duval crawl

And if you like spooky things, the Ghost tours are fun, as well as East Martello tower where you can learn about the legend of Robert the Doll (the inspiration for Chucky)
