It’s usually a bad idea to impulse buy. It’s better to know what you want, look out for it, and snag it the instant it comes up. That’s how I get a Poly reservation 6 days before my October 2021 trip. No hesitation so I was first to request.

The more flexible you are, the more likely you are to get a deal. For example, for that Oct 2021 trip I referenced, I ended up needing to pay for one extra day that we didn’t use (the night before our arrival). At least I didn’t need to wait for our room to be assigned. It was still worth the deal.
The reservations can be for any number of days, essentially. Some are longer than 7, but not often.

It’s all whatever the person who owns the points is putting up for rent. Sometimes it’s just finding holes in availability and then “selling the reservation,” other times, is a trip that got cancelled.
So if you are willing to be flexible, you can find some good deals.
