I see your point. It’s a joint Can-Am responsibility - NORAD is the binational agency tasked with North American airspace defense, originally set up for nuclear defense in case of a Soviet attack. It’s commanded by a USAF general and their deputy is a Canadian general. NORAD’s capabilities may need upgrading to shoot these very large balloons down safely without endangering people on the ground - reports are this balloon was the size of three buses. Ideally would probably want to shoot them down in territorial waters before they enter Can-Am airspace.

I’m guessing it was really to make recovery efforts easier and let them observe it for as long as it remained in US airspace (to help justify shooting it down). It’s not like it was flying over the east coast for most of the time. It was flying over some mighty sparsely populated areas of Canada and the US. I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t more boaters where they shot it down then people on some of the land it flew over. It was a choice to let it proceed and observe it.

I realize my circle is a small sample size, but this concerns me and I thought this was important to share.
The following has happened in the past year:
(1) The wife (40s) of one of my closest friends had a blood clot in her leg (caught in time and fully recovered).
(2) My brother’s close friend (40s) had a stroke (survived and is doing relatively well).
(3) The work colleague (40s) of one of my good friends had a stroke.
(4) The brother (early 50s) of one of my friends dropped dead from a cardiac event.
(5) A friend/acquaintance (not a close friend) of mine (late 40s) dropped dead from a cardiac event.
(6) A professional colleague lost a daughter (30s) to a ruptured aneurism.
I have never had that many young connections have cardiovascular related issues in a relatively short period of time. I suspect prior Covid infections played a role in some (all?) given the impact Covid has on the cardiovascular system.
Ultimately, I think the solution to this will be cleaner indoor air, but how long will it take until we get there??? It took decades to get clean water.

Sad news… Chelsea passed away yesterday. It’s hard to believe that 3 years later an otherwise healthy 24 yo woman has died from covid.
