Universal Pressed Pennies

My kids have just started collecting pressed pennies and I was excited to find this article on the machines at Universal. Does anyone know if this is still relatively up to date? It was written in 2021 and I can’t tell when if/when it was updated. Are they still selling pressed penny books in the gift shops, or do I need to bring from home? Any major changes I need to consider?

Thank you!

There are still penny machines scattered all over the parks!

I’ve never found a case for them so I got mine off eBay!

Davids Coin Travels recently updated the locations.

I recall RixFlix used to report on any changes and new images regarding the pressed penny machines.

I guess at least if we bring our own, we’ll know which belongs to which kid easier.

Wow! This is probably the best pressed penny map I’ve ever seen!

Update: my friend really wanted to do the Universal Collection. They assured us they didn’t sell any album for store them. Also some of the machines were broken or not there anymore. He had some he wanted and had to replace them for others. For sure, the one in the Studios right side near the toilets (which had some Simpson coins) was not there anymore. The one on the left side which had some minions one (although I don’t remember if was near the exit or not) was unplugged and seemed not to work at all). He mostly got all the rest he wanted but was kind of disappointed. It looks the ones in Disney work better

Yeah… they’ve been phasing them out in favor of the big medallions. I prefer the pennies. They used to rotate the designs more often too. I already have everyone I want, but always checking if any news ones pop up!

Pressed pennies are definitely the best souvenir, although I will say they have lost a little luster with the elimination of most hand crank machines around Orlando and much of the rest of the country.

I hope it doesn’t go to just “medallions”. Even if the new machines fake us out and aren’t really using pennies (maybe they are, maybe they aren’t, I have no idea), it adds some nostalgia to us old folks.

I do like that I no longer have to plan to bring a bag of pennies and quarters with me on trips. I kept a roll of them near my vacation packing supplies for years!!

The hand cranks are fun for kids. There are still a few around CityWalk and UOR. I’ve even let complete strangers children, who are watching, turn the crank for me. The kids get to have the fun and the parents don’t have to pay!

I kinda hope they’re using copper slugs. 1982 or older pennies are hard to come by anymore and the zinc streak when pressing looks terrible

I know pure copper makes the best pennies, but with my kids when they were younger, when we would get a new penny, I would make a big deal about how shiny it was and how it would make a shiny pressed penny. I would make a big deal about it and build up the anticipation.

So, they don’t crank? That is the fun part. How is it done? I might have to prepare my kids.

I think it depends of the machine. I didn’t see my friend pressing them cause I was busy spending 2 salaries in Harry Potter souvenirs, but he said some you had to move the crank and some not. We even looked for videos on internet to see how it worked cause he said you can see the original coin falling, but it feels like it’s a pre-cranked one.
