It saves time and stress. That’s a thoughtful thing!
I only understand like 5% of this but I’m wondering if Splash Mountain fits in your list
Fascinating question!
So Splash Mountain at WDW is in Frontierland, which includes a variety of attractions, so it doesn’t fit the “single IP land” criteria.
At DLR, Splash Mountain was added to Critter Country in 1989, the land formerly known as Bear Country, which it shared with the Country Bear Jamboree. Len actually brought up Bear Country as a potential option for the first single IP-land, but they decided that was “internal” IP because there was no movie or anything prior to the land existing.
CBJ closed in 2001, but the Davy Crockett Canoes remained within that land, so it was never solely Splash Mountain. Then Winnie the Pooh opened in 2003.
Today, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Winnie the Pooh, and Davy Crockett’s Canoes are all considered part of Bayou Country, and so that land is not based on a single IP.
How is single IP land connected to
I take “external” IP to mean IP that existed outside the parks prior to it being pulled into the land. So Big Thunder Mountain RR would not be considered external IP since it was developed solely for the parks. Same thing with Haunted Mansion, even though eventually a couple of HM movies have been made.
That said, they kind of used it to mean “not Disney-bred,” like Mickey & Minnie were internal but Avatar and Pixar would be external because their content was originally produced by a non-Disney company or partner.
So Splash Mtn (Song of the South) would be similar to Snow White or Peter Pan?
Yes ma’am.
It wasn’t on your list ![]()
Ah because it’s not a land devoted to a single IP - it’s a single attraction.
Len and Jim were talking about whole lands dedicated to a single IP, such as Toy Story Land. Multiple attractions, shops, theming, etc. all based on the Toy Story films.
MK Fantasyland is based on multiple IPs - Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, the Little Mermaid, Snow White, etc.
Good to know, thanks ![]()
@len Re: rides that have multiple paths like Great Movie Ride:
-
Radiator Springs Racers in DCA came to mind. You either get a paint job or new tires depending on which way you are routed in the final interior scene before the race.
-
Indiana Jones Adventure starts off with one of three doors (youth, riches, knowledge), though this is done through effects rather than physically altering the vehicle’s path.
-
I also thought of Star Tours, Millennium Falcon, and Guardians of the Galaxy (both coasts) as rides that have different permutations - whether it be locations visited, songs, missions achieved, etc. But that’s cheating a bit.
I think that the WDW version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (no idea about the DL version) had two separate paths with different scenes.
Interesting! DLs only has one path.
You’re right! Here’s a link to a good article detailing what each track did. The two tracks were an attempt to have higher capacity.
My memory didn’t fail me!
I recall preferring one path over the other and feeling cheated when the car went on the wrong path ![]()
Thanks!
Wouldn’t that be a hoot! A Toad Ride, Indiana style. ![]()
