RotR Watch: COVID Edition!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep the number at 10:00 the same as they have been, but just increase the number they give out at 2:00.

My understanding (and someone correct me if they know otherwise) is that they haven’t been consistently getting through all the group 1 and group 2 people so that when 4:00 pm came around, they really didn’t have any BGs to offer anyone. Until the ride is up and running without so many breakdowns (and, truth is, if they are still experiencing this with half as many people, then it doesn’t seem like you can blame interference with wireless technologies the ride is using so much!), the amount of guests they were giving BGs to in the morning probably extended well into the 1:00 time period, and then the 1:00 groups extended well past the 4:00 time period.

So, now if they keep the number of BGs offered at 10:00 the same, then by the time 2:00 rolls around, hopefully they are closer to having gotten through them all and can better determine how many groups to assign.

I’m wondering if we’ll eventually end up back to seeing backup BGs being given out at the 2:00 time slot.

You may be right, that sounds more realistic.

On a different note, i remember when we went, the average was 15 groups an hour, and breakdowns lasting about 50 minutes. I how many groups have they been releasing at 10:00?

I think they have already been giving out back-up groups. I’m sure I read a report from someone who got one and did finally get to,ride.

Apparently the two distribution times each lasted only 20 seconds yesterday. But they got through a lot of groups. Here is a plot of the last week:

Good day today!

Wow!

Is anyone starting to count people through the ride? It would be a nice metric to see how large these BGs are.

It would help calm my anxiousness when I see “…the two distribution times each lasted only 20 seconds…”

I haven’t tried going through the process of getting a BG yet from home. Is the process the same as it was in the spring before the closure, only there are now specific times, 10:00AM and 2:00 PM?

Yes, generally the same process. A couple of screens might be slightly different. Just to be clear, the times are when the window to obtain a boarding group opens, so you need to have your phone ready a few minutes before either 10am or 2pm.

Here’s the RD this morning at DHS. Looks like people are still getting there super early just to try for a RotR BG

I’m honestly kind of surprised to see a couple ECVs.

Was at HS on 7/24 arrived at parking at 9:23 took us 10 minutes to get through the parking plaza. Then parking and entry took another 10. I was starting to sweat it that we may not make it in before 10. But we made it Tower of Terror by 9:53 and waited outside until 10 when the groups opened up. Thankfully all members of our party showed up and I was able to get boarding group 13. I kept a close eye on the boarding times and we were able to ride several rides then our group number was called at 10:57 had 1 hour to get to the ride. We scanned in at 11:07 and we got off the ride at 11:46.

why?

Because people with ECVs are more likely to have conditions that could make them more susceptible to COVID (and therefore less likely to be traveling / in public). Len mentioned in a livestream that he saw fewer ECVs and strollers than usual. Of course, some people with ECVs have no cardiovascular issues, but I expect there is some correlation.

P.S. No judgment on my part. Just goes against my expectations.

ah, I get it… I was kinda’ thinking that’s where you would go with that. But I do think that since WDW is doing such a good job ppl might feel safer there than at their local grocer etc. and take the risk???

So on my run this morning – I was trying to distract myself from the misery of running in miserable temps and humidity – I was thinking about how Disney’s BG system as established since HS re-opened is re-creating the morning crazy at HS, which is now worse in impact than even before because it impacts social distancing. Reports from WDW are that entry to all parks is quite safe, speedy, and manageable – except the back-ups and bottle necks are building up again at HS.

So I had 2 thoughts on how to perhaps make this better (and I’m sure I will get good answers on why I’m crazy

  1. Whatever the number of BGs available at a 10am, split it in 4 and open BGs on the hour: 10am , 11am, 12noon, 1pm, and the now-2pm round. Don’t give out more BGs, do the same amount, just a smaller amount available hourly. While it still makes sense to get there at 10am to have the best chance, its not all or nothing, and it might spread out arrivals somewhat.

  2. Or, I don’t understand why one has to be already in the park at all. Disney was doing this starting in December 2019 when SWGE opened to prevent people who were not going to HS from gobbling up the BGs. But if Disney linked the ability to try for a BG to having a Park Reservation that day, it would block out everyone except those who could, in theory, be there at 10am. If Disney opened the BGs at, say 9am that morning and linked the ability to access the reservation to having a HS park reservation that day, the numbers of those who can try is limited to those who are going (which is already limited), but it means there is no reason to get there as early as possible to be through the gates at 10am. That would alleviate the crowds and bottlenecks that are mounting again.

I think these are both good ideas!

I’m guessing the reason they don’t do #2 is because then more people would try to get a BG, and if they didn’t get one, switch their reservation to a different park. As it is, it requires a real investment to get a BG - you have to wake up, get physically to a park, and use up a day’s admission and burn a park reservation. Only then do you get the chance at a BG. So that probably whittles down the group quite a bit. But still, it would be a lot better for guests and for safety if they did that.

This would make a lot more sense. It’s pretty similar to what Universal is doing with VLPs for Hagrid’s

It would also let them control how many BGs to release later, like after 12pm, if there have been multiple closures earlier in the day that have them backed up.

Can anyone tell me if they have tried to get a BG with a large group, Like 10-12 people? How many people in your group were trying to get a BG? Has anyone made it into a BG with such a large party? Please give me your best advice. We are going in September. Thanks!

I have read reports of people getting a party of 10-12 people just fine. It really shouldn’t make a difference, as long as everyone is in the park and is linked to your MDE. If for some reason it doesn’t work, get a BG for those who you are able to, then talk to guest services. I have seen many reports of accommodations being made for members of a party who didn’t initially get a BG for one reason or another (and between you and me, sometimes the guests didn’t deserve it ).
