Rental Cars 2025

Did the toll charges recently go ? I have use gone with the charges and it has been about $18 a trip recently total.

My booking for next month has jumped $107 for a compact.

The actual charges are $1.68 per booth for the two that hit my account. Not sure what they used to be.

I’m not sure what Alamo normally charges for their toll service but $15/day seems to ring a bell. That’s $15/day whether you hit a toll or not, so the obvious play to me is to always decline the “service”.

Just incase some of you don’t know…. you can use the SunPass app for your tolls. It’s a free app and you just set up the account to automatically charge the cc you put on file. Then you enter the make, model, color, plate no. and dates. of the vehicle you are driving. You won’t have any extra charges from the car hire place or need to buy a device to stick in your window. Just make sure to decline service when checking in and move the toll device to “off” position, if one is in the rental.

Did you have to do anything when you got your car to default to pay-as-you-go? Did you go straight to your vehicle?

When I rented from Avis last year, they added the unlimited toll package despite me telling them I wanted the pay as I go, so I’m wary of this on my next rental.

This. I declined everything in the app in advance.

I need to look into this, but I should be able to add the vehicle to my existing toll pass, which works in all of Florida, without having a secondary account.

The pay as you go seems cheap enough to me to make downloading the app and enter all the information an unnecessary hassle. But I recognize everyone has a different tolerance for charges.

YES! I use my SunPass all over the USA… even in Hawaii

Same. My ipass (Illinois) is linked to ez pass which works with just about every toll system in the country. It worked for my return trip to the airport, but the system just didn’t link up quick enough for whatever reason.

You really need to look at your receipt before walking away from the counter. They try to sneak in little things like that, so you need to dispute it right then and there.

Yes, I discovered this at the time and why I’m more careful now. Unfortunately, it was hidden in the receipt under “other charges.” I talked about it in my trip report last year - I’ll go dig it up later.

I still have my EZPass from living in Philly. The PA Turnpike is just north of Philadelphia, so I did use that road quite a bit. Here in Indiana, there is only one toll road, and it’s in the very northern part of the state, basically connecting Toledo, OH with Chicago, IL. So I don’t need it here, but I keep it for those trips to Florida.

Another issue is that a lot of the toll programs are moving to the single mount sticker and getting rid of the transponders. This will almost force you into getting the app or whatever for use with rental cars. Wonder how much big car rental has influenced that.

It has always been a service fee plus the top only if you go through the tolls. Have never been charged for days I have not been through a toll.

There’s only a daily charge if you go with the unlimited toll option (which is a scam :winking_face_with_tongue:).

I just checked, there is a $4.95 (x2) service fee plus the tolls (x2). It is generally about $18 total for each rental. I will report back after my next trip.

This is my receipt from National. It only charged me a fee on the day that I hit tolls. (I hit a lot.) I did nothing extra to utilize this service.

If you head south, you can use the EZ Pass on the I-65 bridges.

Here is what Avis discloses for their options. e-Toll Unlimited is a scam and this is what I was somehow enrolled in despite asking for the Standard option.

In the state of Florida. You are responsible for payment of all tolls incurred during the rental period. Avis offers an optional service called e-Toll that allows customers to use electronic toll lanes on highways, bridges, tunnels and other tolled passages. All Avis vehicles are pre-equipped to electronically process tolls. Unless you directly pay the toll yourself as described below (see “Opting Out of e-Toll”), you will automatically opt-into e-Toll and pay the fees described herein if you drive through an electronic toll.

e-Toll fees (Standard) : If you use the e-Toll service at any time during your rental, you agree to pay a convenience fee of $6.95 for each day on which you incur a toll up to a maximum amount of $34.95 per rental period (not to exceed 30 days). In addition, you will pay all tolls incurred at the maximum prevailing non-discounted or cash rates posted by the toll authority.

e-Toll Unlimited : Avis also offers e-Toll Unlimited, which includes the cost of tolls and convenience fees. If you choose e-Toll Unlimited, you agree to pay a daily flat fee of $10.99 - $25.99, depending on checkout location, for each day of the rental period, regardless of whether or not you incur any tolls, up to a maximum of $54.95 - $129.95 per week. e-Toll Unlimited must be selected at the time you reserve or check out your vehicle, otherwise you agree to pay the standard e-Toll fees if you use the e-Toll service.

Opting Out of e-Toll : If you do not choose e-Toll Unlimited, you may avoid the standard e-Toll fees on any day during the term of the rental if you ensure the transponder shield box is in the “closed” position and you (i) pay cash for all tolls, (ii) use your own adequately funded, properly mounted and compatible electronic toll device to pay for all tolls, (iii) pay the toll authority directly through any available online or other service according to the toll authority’s rules and requirements; or (iv) avoid electronic toll roads or passages.

I actually wonder if I would have saved money doing this! I hit numerous tolls every day but I was not in WDW.
