Yes, it’s open and it’s our go-to for our “mixed” family (2 teen boys who never liked characters even as little kids and would rather poke their eyes out than wait in line to meet a princess) and little sister who only wants to chat with princesses and would rather not step onto a thrill ride.
Akershus, in particular is a great use of ONE dining plan credit if you go for “lunch” at 11:30 or 11:45 When it’s technically still breakfast. The boys are happy to strap on the bacon and waffle feedbag while their sister’s main objectives of the trip are solidly met. Also- there is something magical about their cheesy hash brown/casserole situation that really hits the spot. Finally, I rarely drink at all, let alone day drink but… since it’s included in the meal plan, and I am nothing if not a frugal steward of family funds, it must be said that their cocktails are quite nice.

This is magic
When the Kid was in robotics for 4 years families signed up for a breakfast dish during reveal morning. I brought this which almost always disappeared before I got a chance to go thru the line. 
One year we had a pair of 7 yo cousins at Akershus, one boy, one girl. The boy’s mom was surprised to learn that he had a thing for Aurora. I suspect he was surprised, too.
Back then we adults were mostly there for the fish, cheese and potato casserole. 
It wasn’t about the kids or princesses at all.

I’ve only done two - Chef Mickey’s as a teen in the early 2000’s and Cape May Cafe as an adult with the niece and nephew last November - but I really enjoyed Cape May Cafe. Maybe because I love the real Cape May, but I enjoyed the vibe and I am 100% always a fan of a good breakfast buffet.
I kind of want to go back for our upcoming trip in August, but it would just be the two of us and I’d feel weird just going as adults. When we were there in August I didn’t see any adults sans kids.
We’re doing Topolino’s for dinner, not a character breakfast but I’m excited for it.

I have only been to two character meals with kids. I’ve gone to plenty without. It’s not weird. Just enjoy! I’m actually shocked you didn’t see any parties of just adults. I’ve never been to Cape May - the slight seafood smell is very off-putting for me. I doubt I’ll ever go. Maybe it gets a different crowd?

I go solo! 
I know some people look at me oddly, but I have a great time! The characters are always understanding and never judgemental in any way. I just let then know how excited I am to meet them. Then they give me the same attention / treatment as every other table.

Just went sans kids for the first time last year and this is what I thought too. But flip side - character meals are very much a part of going and were when we took our kids. Ended up doing a breakfast at Topolino’s mostly because we wanted an excuse to take the skyliner and see the resort. A very low key pleasant experience! And the food was really good too. Overpriced of course, but still good.

We used to love Akershus. Before covid shut down they had a nice cold cuts selection before dinner. They had a free picture with a princess for the family and the little princess parade for little dressed up princesses. Now most of that is gone. The price was always high but now it is astronomical. My wife, being half Norwegian, wanted to go but now it is just not worth the cost. It used to be hard to book Akershus but now it’s no problem.

First of Dinner is not a character meal at Cape Mays. Sad part is crab legs are no longer on the menu included in the buffet but $45 extra per pound. Otherwise, I and my wife love the place as we are seafood lovers. Love their huge shrimp, oysters soup and ribs. Reasonably priced for a Disney restaurant.

Had the same thing happen with our grandson. He was never into having his picture taken with the characters but the princesses were another story in Aker. He would jump right up for the shot. The hard part is he fell in love with our Norwegian waitress and wanted to move to Norway and become a reindeer farmer with her. She was in her early 20’s and he is only 12. Now you know your grandson is now interested in girls when your walking along and he whispers in your ear, Grandpa! did you notice all the Eye candy around here.

It wouldn’t be a Disney trip if we didn’t have a character meal. We schedule one almost every day. They just make me and DD happy that way.
