Poll Time! The Case for Character Meals

We love Topolino’s breakfast but treat it as brunch or lunch, booking in the 11-12:00 range, so it is often our big meal of the day. We go just about every trip. Have not been to the World in the past year but as of 2024 they would still bring a side of the heavenly sour cream waffle with another entree and they would bring a fruit plate for the table to share (how is a plate of fruit a $50 entree anyway?!). My girls were always crazy for the kids waffle dippers with the raspberry sauce and they would bring them extra waffles if we asked. So given that I always felt it was a decent deal for a breakfast meal and we always left plenty full.

 yeah definitely something like that.

Absolutely! I think this makes a huge difference.

Well, we weren’t telling him our darkest secrets so world peace, dark chocolate all kind of a throw away answer. But at least dark chocolate I know how to procure for myself!

I did not realize this… You did not have to pay extra for any of these?

The only time I did a character breakfast was in DL at Storytellers. This was when they had either the buffet or menu. The price for a buffet or even Prix Fixe is too much for the little amount of food that we would end up eating.

No, they didn’t, we just asked hopefully and politely and the servers seemed to be empowered to do it. The waffle was just a small sample size but it was enough for a craving fix. I couldn’t see paying that price and ordering a waffle for my meal so I’m so thankful they allow that. But again that was 2024.

We did 'Ohana almost exclusively because DD11 loves Stitch. I mean, she has like 12 Stitch plushies / squishmallows of various sizes, she has painted Stitch drawings that are hanging on her wall, etc.

It was :100: worth it. Memories to last a lifetime.

But due to the hefty price tag, that was probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Glad she has other people to buy her these things :lobster:

You’re hitting on the reason why I don’t buy every plushie my kids pick up.

I think we are in this camp as well. My kids aren’t all that crazy about meeting characters. They will count seeing them in a parade as a better deal. And that’s easier, faster and cheaper for me!

We did Topolino’s and Artist Pointe on our last trip mostly because I wanted to do them. I agree that if you do the early lunchtime at Topo’s then there’s some more value there. I am a big Minnie fan and like the setting and costumes. Artist Pointe I love the food and would do it again if I didn’t have to spend the extra dough for characters that I don’t need.

This year we are not doing any character dining! I would do it if there were more varied characters that interested tween boys. Phineas and Ferb, take my money. Darth Vader, have some more! We love the food at Ohana but I’m not paying that price. I would think about it if they changed to Moana. Miguel, Kristoff, Olaf… any of these! But I think my family feels like we have enough pictures with Mickey.

I love character dining - I want to try them all at least once.
I have zero kids and have done them solo (though my mom really loves them too) - a girl’s gotta eat, why not chat with characters while you do it?

That said - my preference is towards the prix fixe or a buffet - I do not care much for the family style situations, it feels so wasteful…I would not revisit any of those.

When my kids were very young, we took them to Chef Mickey’s. My son was very shy. When Goofy came to the table and my kids stood up to get a photo with him, he (teasingly) pinched my son’s boob. My son still mentions this incident and has kind of been weirded out by characters ever since.

In a much later year, he did not mind this character experience too much (ha,ha)…

Thankfully he has more self restraint than Goofy.

For me, these in park character meals aren’t wasting any park time at all. If anything it’s like buting a LL for character meetings that comes with a full meal!

Meetings multiple characters all at one visit while being sitted in the A/C is worth the cost and IME better than walking around the park waiting for characters!

DD drew me these after Topolino’s.
