Poll Time! Motion Sickness at WDW

Well. If you always want Poly-level perks, yes. Yes it will.

But I’ve found cruising to be less costly than other travel bc so much food and entertainment is rolled in.
I look at cost per person per day and have had some very low figures.

Just like there are many ways to do WDW, there are many ways to cruise. It depends on the features you utilize the most. :+1:

Everyone is different (as you’ve already read in some responses) but I thought I’d give my perspective as well because it’s helpful to see how different people react. Regular Dramamine is like a sleeping pill for me. It kicks my butt. With the Less Drowsy version, I don’t feel any impact to my energy level. I start taking it the day before my trip and every day of the trip as a preventative. I usually take it in the morning with breakfast.

This is the same for me. Right when I start to feel “off” in the backwards portion, it usually ends thankfully. But 2X in a row is enough for me.

Same. Love GOTG except the spinny end part. I’m fine on things like dumbo because it’s slow, but Astro orbiter is like a centrifuge. G forces come in play and so does the inability to focus on one particular thing.

It’s strange - I give my daughter kids Dramamine (usually 1/2 or 3/4 dose) and she never seems tired. Might just be the dosing difference in kids. They don’t make less drowsy for kids.

We had girls - 8 and 9 - at WDW, first timers. The 8 yo loved all the coasters, arms in the air, grinning. The 9 yo wanted to like the rides, but was definitely uncomfortable. Everything switched at Dino. The 8 yo coaster fiend was hiding as much as possible against dad’s side while the 9 yo was clearly in her element, studying the dinosaurs intently.

The unpaved county road we live on is just about the same as Dino. Especially after a storm. Washboards, ruts, potholes, small runoff ditches diagonally across the road.

Maybe there’s something like that near you?

That’s a good description. We don’t have something like that per se but PA roads are the worst and full of potholes. She can probably handle that for a few minutes if Ongove her Dramamine.

Vertigo is an ill-defined term, but it is generally a sensation of spinning/tumbling/tilting when you are not actually in motion (or a sensation of a motion other than what you are actually experiencing). Motion sickness is nausea and sometimes vomiting as a result of experiencing motion of some sort (most often spinning). I, fortunately, have never experienced motion sickness. I think the best way to ride MS is after a couple of margartas (and I always move my head around - to get more of a “vertigo” sensation.

The last time I rode Space Mountain I got off feeling like I had been hit by a bus.

This is also common in military aviation and is termed “simulator sickness”; pilots who have no issues dogfighting in the actual jet report feeling sick after simulators. This is the result od what you are seeing and what you are feeling don’t match.

This could fall into the “vertigo” category. Specifically it’s a visual illusion called “vection” - the sense of moving when an object next to you move while you are not moving (thing of a car next to you pulling out of a parking space and you slam on the breaks because you think you are moving forward. Your peripheral vision gives you a lot of motion ques, so if you have a very wide screen (e.g. circlevision) the effect can be quite strong. This is also the basis behind Soarin’.

Absolutely. If you think you are going to get motion sickness, there is a much greater chance that you will.

This is a condition colloquially known as “shark stomach”. Our stomach naturally moves around in our abdominal cavity; when it’s empty it move more triggering various neural responses. When it is full, it does not move as much. That’s why we tell pilots/aircrew never to fly on an empty stomach.

Those two are on rails so there should be no “sea” sickness. They’re kind of like riding a train in the water.

This is the only motion that makes me nauseous and I have never had a problem on Dinosaur. Its rough, but not so much starting and stopping to make me sick.

I do this! Probably only in the last 10 years though. Soarin doesn’t bother me at all but I’ve never fancied doing those films again.

How old is he? It’s loud, dark and very jerky. The gift shop is awesome for Dino lovers, though.

Amazing breakdown.

Once, after a cruise, (just one of them, mind you), I experienced mal de disembarquement.
After the cruise we had hours to kill before our flight so did a local excursion.

I felt woozy waiting for the bus after we got off the ship, but fine on the bus.
Then sick waiting for our post-cruise Fort Lauderdale tour, but fine on the boat. Then dizzy as we shopped, and fine in the taxi.
Then dizzy at the airport. Fine on the plane.
Dizzy in the airport. Fine in the mini van to drive home.
Got in bed and it never stopped moving.

Ended up taking exceptionally high doses of meclizine for three days and sleeping it off per ENT nurse practitioner.

Other types of attractions-- I selected because anything that shoots me backwards (Everest, Mummy at Universal) makes me so sick.

I haven’t tried GotG yet, so I’m sure I’ll be rocking my relief band for that one. (Even though it’s all just a placebo, I’m ok with that.)

I mentioned to my doctor I was concerned about getting seasick on an upcoming cruise. Ginger usually helps, but I now having a medical condition that makes eating ginger unpleasant. She gave me a prescription for scopolamine. It’s a patch you wear for up to three days. She recommended I try it at home first to see how it might affect me. The box has the usual “may cause drowsiness” warnings. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet. I need to pick a non-busy day when I can afford to potentially feel off. I’m also trying to decide if I should try it and go do something I know will make me motion sick to see if it helps.

I appreciate the discussion here. I’ll be putting more in my TR but after not feeling great after Incredicoaster at the beginning of our trip we avoided “coasters” but this morning I wanted to try DL space mountain. Nope. Not really a fun experience. Not nauseous but felt off. I don’t think I can do coasters anymore which hit me hard this morning and I had a very small cry at the time. I’ve always loved coasters and to not feel great on and after one is definitely a new experience. June 2021 had only minor issues with most coasters in WDW some may have been the heat. However, thinking back SDD, BTMRR and EE were all mildly off. We avoided other DL coasters today after SM.

Star Tours and Indy were fine though I avoided a second Indy because of my sciatic nerve issues.

MFSR in June 2021 it was the only one that stopped my day. We had never ridden it before, were the only 2 in the cabin and so both had to be pilots, with the wonky split of up/down left/right. When we rode it this trip we asked to be engineers and I concentrated on pressing buttons and only glanced up quickly a couple times. I mostly listened. Completely fine!!

In WDW TOT is our favorite, back from 26 years ago. I know they added randomness to the drops and a few more but it was great June 2021. I rode DL TOT about 15 years ago and don’t remember a problem. However, we rode GotG After Dark and it was too much. As someone else said more violent lots of up and down. And it goes on and on. I actually wanted it to end. Did not feel good after it, off again not nauseous but felt like a needed real food. Because of that we didn’t do the regular Breakout ride.

Racers was fun once, but I really didn’t try to go again because I wanted to fun to be the memory. Not sure we will bother with TT though it was the only big Disney ride we didn’t get to June 2021.

It’s been hard to adjust to “you won’t enjoy this”. But hearing from others is helping, though I may still cry about it some more yet. I will definitely be planning our two trips differently now and I look forward to the Universal discussions.

tea cups is the only ride that would cause me significant motion sickness, unless you didn’t spin it at all but that would kind of defeat the point.

EE also gives me some nausea, I think it was the reversing part that did it.

This did it for my husband-- the rest of us were laughing and having the times our lives!!! He was positively green after this and off for the rest of the night.

i know somebody like that. FOP is their favorite ride, but Soarin’ can ruin the afternoon. Sounds strange to me, but that’s their reality

I’m kind of sad, because I think the regular Mission Breakout is easier to stomach. The After Dark version is definitely … more. I love both (more than ToT), but I think you would have had a better experience on the regular version.
