Because I’m paranoid, I have the family spread out their clothes across multiple suitcases, so if one suitcase gets lost, everyone has at least one outfit (usually 2) in a different suitcase.
Packing cubes makes this easy. Each of us has a color, so when unpacking our bags at arrival, I can easily grab my purple packing cubes out of each suitcase.
My DS19 and I are heading down on a trip down to Miami to visit my Mom and sis and from the looks of his previous packing I’m thinking more organization within the bag is going to be a very good thing.
Plus, I’m hoping to start us up on some binge flying with my companion pass and many SW points, so wanted to see how I felt about using packing bags beforehand.
They showed up this weekend and were smaller than I expected, but guess I’ll have to see how they work in practice when I pack this weekend.
They seem well made - I was concerned with a few reviews saying they ripped immediately and had a funny smell. But, just about anything you look at online likely has those same two complaints in the reviews.
I normally separate by type vs by outfit. An exception would be if I know I’m doing a split stay with 1 random night or 2 I’ll put everything I need for that short stay in 1 and then use the others by type. Another exception is my pants. Bc they take up more room and are fairly cylindrical when I roll I put those in the base of my suitcase to fill in the space between the handle. Then I put the cubes on top.
Most typically I put it together by day, especially if there is any split stay happening
But occasionally I will put it together by clothing type.
For the January meetup trip, I put most things together by day. I also then had a second cube that had “cold weather clothing” (long pants, sweatshirt) just in case. I was less apt to unpack those things so it made sense to keep them together.
Our family has different colors for each person. This makes it easy for packing for split stays because we can leave whole suitcase(s) intact knowing we don’t need anything in there. Also makes it easy to ensure, as someone else noted, that everyone has something in the way of clothes in case any one piece of luggage is lost.
I like a little bit of variety
I have some long skinny ones that are perfect for underwear, socks - that kind of thing - as well as for toiletries.
But the bigger ones that I have are ideal for putting a few days’ outfits into
I have these. I’m sharing this for sizing only. My set of 6 does not have any mediums - I have 3 large and 3 slim
Was watching a vlog a while back who was talking about packing cubes, and pointed out that if possible you should look for ones specifically designed to fit your specific luggage. I hadn’t thought about this before, but if your packing cubes aren’t the right dimensions, you can actually end up wasting space.
It might not be a huge deal…but worth considering when looking at the dimensions…comparing them to the dimensions of your luggage.
I don’t like the really large cubes so I would never buy a set like that. When the cube is half the size of your suitcase, what’s the point? I bought 2 of the same set bc it had the best combo of sizes for me.
2 large ones stack on top of each other or fit side by side in my suitcase. Then all 4 of the smaller ones fit on top or beside the other 2.
I think my large and medium are the same size as your medium and small. I like the slim ones in theory and almost bought some myself, but the measurements didn’t work for me and my larger sized clothes.
