I am looking at our points for a May 2027 trip. I can book 5 nights, and have about 11 point leftover…but if I buy 13 OTUP, I can book a sixth night.
I know you can only buy OTUP at 7 months, but I also read if you cancel the trip, they have to be used by the end of that use year.
Is it possible, then, to, say, book a trip now that is 7 months out, buy the 13 OTUP for that trip, and then cancel the trip? That would mean when I book the May 2027 trip at 11 months or so, those points would now be available to use since the use year is through June?
Maybe I am not understanding this, because it seems like an awfully big loophole.
I do not think that this will work. If I recall the one time I used OTUP they were clearly labeled as OKW points. (I own at SSR.) So they aren’t really manually combinable with your points.
Thanks. I see. That kind of makes sense how they would prevent doing what I was getting at. It seemed too easy, otherwise, to work the system!!!
I’ll be honest, I don’t actually need to do this. Since I’m booking at SSR, adding on another night at 7 months out to an already existing reservation in early May is not going to be an issue, but when I started looking at the OTUP rules, I was wondering if this would be possible because of what it said about if you cancel the reservation, they have to be used by the end of the use year.
If you are doing this at SSR I don’t think it’s worth any hacks because you will be totally fine at 7 months. But if you wanted to do this for another resort, I would look into a points transfer instead of OTUP. For 13 points it wouldn’t be much more expensive.
