I know that OKW is supposed to be undergoing a “light” refurbishment of rooms this year. Has there been any word as to timeline on that? Have they started any of the rooms yet?
I can’t find any info on timing. Makes me wonder if it hasn’t started quite yet. It was only announced in December.
It would be nice to hear a timing update. We are currently thinking about staying there this summer. If it’s all happening “inside the rooms,” I am hopeful it won’t be too disruptive to where they book guests to stay.
No specific dates given, but DTB’s recent comparison of OKW and SSR has some thoughts/references to the refurbishments here. It seems to suggest Olivia’s will also be refurbed, so if that’s important to you, I’d keep an eye out for more date announcements. Sounds like the second half of the year might be safer than the first?
I doubt it would be too disruptive. I’m just hoping that, maybe, the room we will be staying in will be done for our August trip. But, considering there has been no official timeline reported, I’m figuring that won’t happen.
From what I’ve read, the refurbishment at Old Key West is planned to be light, mostly updating furniture and fixtures rather than a full overhaul. There aren’t many reports yet about rooms being completed, but discussions like this one show that guests are keeping an eye on progress and timelines for 2026 stays.
It’s a soft goods refurb - curtains, flooring etc.
I have to assume they’d do one building at a time, albeit maybe in groups. So each building would be taken out of inventory in sequence.
Olivia’s have already started by removing the wall of photos and archiving them.
I think I read they’ll be closing Olivia’s for a few weeks whilst offering a take out menu. Not sure that a date has been given yet though.
I think there is an assumption (which might be wrong) that for those rooms that allow it, they will possibly change the second bed to a pull down instead. This is based on the fact that other “soft good” refurbs included installing pull-down beds. I think the studios they can do this in, at least. Will they? Remain to be seen.
I can’t see how they will incorporate a Murphy bed into the old Key West rooms, much as I’d like to see that happen. The rooms have so many windows, which is such a great thing overall. But it does pose a tremendous obstacle in putting Murphy beds into those spaces.
I suppose they could consider putting them into the studios as you mention and having a real living space in those rooms instead of the two queen beds. This would make studios far more appealing to me in that location. I really value having a living space in a DVC room when I’m traveling, particularly with DH.
At one of the Condo Association meeting in December they said that OKW would not be getting the Murphy beds. By which they mean the queen wall beds.
The windows don’t allow enough space for the queen wall beds. If they used that angled wall near the entry & kitchen, it would block the fire exit when pulled down.
They could replace the sleeper chairs with a pull down twin bed though.
The studio I was in could totally have had a Murphy bed. Or two!
I’m sure someone will be ready to point out why my idea is a bad one, but I don’t understand why the DVC’s don’t have two pulldown beds. In the All-Stars, I have slept in the table-turned-bed multiple times and found them very comfortable. At All-Star music and at Hilton head Island we also had a pulldown couch turned into bed. I wonder why the DVC‘s don’t have two pulldown beds - meaning during the day you could have a full living room and table?
Just studios (and 2-bedroom lockoffs). I’m not sure they could in the 1 bedrooms.
