Miracle save on Dream yesterday!

just don’t sit on them!

I am more afraid that my lanyard will snap and I will lose my card and get in trouble for littering.

I wear ears a lot and anytime I go up to a deck when it’s windy, I have to pull them off immediately because I am so nervous they will fly off and I will also get in trouble for littering.

And I do not understand how anyone can feel secure holding their phone so close to the railing either (like if they are taking photos and stretching their arm while holding the phone over the railing). I get nervous for them anytime I see it.

DH & I were talking about how it was probably one of the only survivable places to fall from. Because Deck 4 is under the lifeboats with nothing under it protruding out and like you said, close enough that it’s not too hard a fall into the water.

In my own pool Julia almost killed us both once :flushed:
That was a scary moment

Yep. My 6’5” son almost drowned both of us in a pool. Thankfully, someone pulled him off me.

I still have nightmares about it.

I have to say, I hate to villainize the father too much. Without more information, the only thing we know for sure is that he saved his daughter’s life. Even if he set her on the railing, it’s not clear exactly what that means or what other circumstances were at play. If I made a mistake, I’d hope people wouldn’t be too harsh in their judgment.

Yes another thing you learn as a lifeguard is you scoop them and hold them from behind. Never ever come from the front. you put your arms under their armpits from behind and lie backwards a bit. You also say over and over again, remain calm, everything is okay, I have you, etc.

I would be less concerned about all the internet judgment, and more concerned about his wife’s! I can only imagine how scared and then angry she must feel!

I mean not that in your situation you were trying to rescue him, but smart thinking BTW!

I once jumped into a 53 degree lake (I mean I literally dove off the dock and I shallow water dove so I went out far from the dock). I was a lifeguard and on swimteam at the time and I almost drowned. It took everything in me to doggy paddle back to the doc. Cold water shock is a thing. I couldn’t breathe; I was gasping for air.

Very much agree. The hate he is getting all over the comments of the FB groups is pretty bad. I do think something was at play where she was on it somehow that she wasn’t supposed to be, but we have no idea if he was the one doing anything. Maybe he was vehemently against it and trying to reason with whoever was putting her on the railing. But whatever it was, he stepped up in a way I can’t imagine having to, to save her. And that’s the fact we do know.

I have a phone purse strap thing so I can do this knowing the phone is safely wrapped around my body!

I have been thinking about their family today and what kinds of conversations must they be having now over it. That’s a pretty big, scary, traumatizing thing, for all of them.

I agree. The impulse to jump in after is not lost on me. Not looking around for help. Going IN after your kid - let’s be real - that isn’t always automatic. I wonder if I could have jumped in after. I wonder if DH would have.

Yea, I don’t know that I could have, not automatically like that. And DH hasn’t ever felt comfortable in water and doesn’t swim so I know unless he had a floatation device already on, he wouldn’t. But because we’re much less comfortable with our ability to swim well, we are not at all risk-takers around water.

I would not, I’m sure.

I know I could have but that’s cuz I’ve been tested as a lifeguard. I had a lifeguard friend that froze when a toddler was drowning and she quit. It’s hard to know till your in that situation if you are fight or flight or freeze.

Could just be an Internet game of telephone, but saw one reddit thread where someone said the man who jumped in was not the father but someone with dive experience who happened to see it happen.

I find it odd that the guy in the boat in the rescue video is not holding the girl - I sure wouldn’t want to let go of my kid. But, he was likely exhausted, so could just be that.

I found it even more odd that they did not have any life jackets or helmets on like the crew! I am surprised the rescue vessel didn’t have extras?

I don’t want to villainize the father, but I think the railing situation needs to at least be made more clear or else cruising/the cruise ship becomes the villain if she just “fell off.” You don’t fall off a cruise ship unless you are doing something dangerous to begin with.

Thank you for saying what I couldn’t get my brain to say in a way that made this much sense.
