I know they have car seats but what about boosters? My kids definitely won’t fit in a car seat.
I think they have two convertible car seats that generally are installed as a 5 point car seat but can easily be converted to a high back booster seat.
Great. Thanks.
Also, for what it’s worth (and don’t hate on me, zealots!), the FL car seat laws are pretty lax. I think if the child is six (maybe even five?!), they don’t require anything. Since we were only going a short distance, I had my 4 yo sit in the already installed car seat and let my 7 yo (who uses a booster at home) just use the regular seat belt (adjusted down of course).
I know it’s lax and I would feel ok with my 8yo - she’s very small though but figured if they’re easily available I may as well use it. My other is 6 almost 7 but also small.
I believe the age is 7. When I was planning for my most recent trip I needed to get a booster for my 4 and 6 year olds but not my 7 and 11 year olds, according to my research.
Per Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles,
“Florida law requires children age 5 and under to be secured properly in a crash-tested, federally approved child restraint device.”
“Children should be in the rear seats until at least age 12, since deployed front seat air bags can be dangerous to children.”
Otherwise, nothing specific about ages 6 and above, in terms of what type of seats.
Oh I guess I was wrong! It’s been a while since I was researching.
I didn’t mean to make you “wrong,” I just wanted to do the simple thing and look up the info from an official source. Just the way I am. The interwebs make it so easy to look up answers to questions and then cite the sources.
Ha ha I should have looked it up! I did look it up a couple of years ago, but I misremembered.
So we took one today and when I asked for boosters the driver asked their ages and when I said 6&8 she said not necessary and we went on our way. I knew the law but amazing how lax it is.
I think I figured out why I had 7 in my head. At the time I looked it up, my kids were 2, 4, 7, and 9, and I determined I needed a car seat / booster for 2 and 4 but not for 7 and 9. So for me, the cutoff was (my) 7 (-year-old).
Seems like if a parent asks for a booster, you get a booster, no matter the age/what the law says/what the driver thinks.
Won’t help now, but we had a “Bubble Bum” seat we used for my youngest on a prior trip. Then you have the booster with you!
We have that too. Still rather go without. I thought it was odd we asked for a booster and she basically said don’t bother.
