A quick follow up on this math one to find the PIN. Why run this as a PIN transaction? Just swipe and purchase since it clearly shows that it is a Visa.

This has bothered me the entire time.

I’d forgotten about all that.

For the record, my comment about @Tall_Paul1 simply meant this. The integral is (by UK standards) undergraduate level and there is (to my mind) a non-trivial step that @Tall_Paul1 sailed through in his first written solution without even feeling the need to give the details. I thought that was pretty impressive, especially for someone who (I’m assuming) doesn’t work out integrals every day and probably hasn’t done one in a decade or more.

My beef with @ryan1 was that he appeared to trivialise @Tall_Paul1’s achievement. Though (as is often the case) it may have been that we were talking at cross-purposes. Indeed, I do joke to my own students that we’ve all spent the last three hundred years copying Isaac Newton’s homework. But if math were simply a matter of recall, then we’d all be good at it and I wouldn’t endlessly hear from strangers enquiring after my profession “I hated math at school”.

Anyway, let’s change the subject to something less controversial (?!?!) than math.

Harrogate. It’s nicer than where you live. Sorry.

Are you saying you don’t see the beauty in that?

(Seriously…that is an image from Detroit, not actually where I live…and an older one at that.)

It reminds me of Mariupol. Except it has the excuse of being bombed by the Russians.

True, until this year with my daughter taking calculus, so dusted it off a bit. Otherwise, just occasional partial derivative stuff when I’ve had to find a way to calculate measurement uncertainty for some lab instrumentation.

Well, I was impressed. And that was my point.

It is a case of tone being lost in text…but it sounded like you were accusing @Tall_Paul1 of “cheating” somehow…meaning, either he was a genius, or he cheated to get the answer. That was why I was questioning what you meant to begin with!

I’ve frequently dusted off my math skills for things up through pre-calc…but once my kids hit Calculus, they were on their own again! I remember some…but just enough to be dangerous, so I figure they can consult with their classmates or professor if they need help! (Although…they never actually ended up asking me for help, so it was no matter.)
