Probably, on average, about 80% less than they used to.

For me, light is important to stave off SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder - although I do not rise to the level of a diagnosis). I need lights on in the room I’m in and in the rooms I can see. It makes a huge difference to my mood. We use all LED lights so they are quite energy efficient. It’s just a trade-off for me between mental state and saving electricity. I’ll pick my mental state pretty much all the time.

My electricity bills are about $45 a month. I use about 200kWh per month. (I have gas central heating, but my cooker is electric). I leave lights on all the time. All my lights are low energy. I have a tumble dryer that I use for about half my laundry items. I have a six year old big screen TV and every Apple product money can buy. I never turn things off at the switch or unplug things.

If I were strict about turning lights off, how much would I save? I feel like it wouldn’t be much. Not enough to yell at myself about.

It is worth noting that most LED bulbs are not full spectrum, and aren’t nearly as effective at helping with SAD as incandescent bulbs with the same brightness.

Me too! Actually I run on two modes:

Before ~7am - leave all the lights OFF!!! Shower in the dark. Guess where my whiskers are when shaving.

Other times: All the lights ON!!! This house / restaurant / workspace is depressing.

Mine are about 3x that much. More in the summer, though, due to central air (although I pay less for heat in the summer, but more in the winter, and less in electricity during the winter).

I pay about $2k or so in electric annually, but Jun-Aug can be over $300/month. In December it’s more like $130.

Perhaps your house is 3x the size?

That would only matter during summer months. During winter months, electricity isn’t used for climate control. Only lighting, and then things like TV, computers, charging of phones, and appliances.

Actually, come to think of it, this isn’t 100% true. The furnace has a blower motor that has to run in either case.

I have a kitchen, a shower room, a hallway wide enough to be a room, a large bedroom and a sitting room. (I have a spare bedroom, which was a study where I did my tuition. But now that it’s all online, the study has been abandoned. I’ve even closed the door and turned off the heating in there.)

For some reason all the doors are wedged open all the time. I’m going for a spacious loft effect or something. And all the lights are on all day, except the bedroom. The living room has a chandelier with five 5 watt lights in it. The hallway has the same. And the kitchen has four 9 watt lights. The shower room has one.

Change of topic.

I just saw this meme on LinkedIn:

First, does anyone know if it’s actually true?

Second, it does not remotely describe our political leaders. Why do people vote for leaders who are the antithesis of those suggested by the wolf pack?

Have seen that one before, sadly is not a real description of the wolf hierarchy.

But, I think the idea is spectacular and no reason we shouldn’t model ourselves around it!

Assuming there aren’t parallel packs of wolves that think this pack of wolves are complete idiots and refuse to participate.

I know a lot of times here who you vote for is not in support of that person it’s just that person is the least worst option of a list of not great options.

Hmm. I’ll admit, I don’t see how this translates in any way whatsoever to humanity. Just seems like someone wanting to make that final statement, and using a false narrative of wolves as if to seemingly support it. Only, it doesn’t make any sense.

I also don’t really agree with the concluding sentence. A leader, perhaps, should take care of the team…but more importantly they should be directing the team in a way that draws the best out of everyone. A byproduct of this is that the team would be taken care of.

I’m awarding myself points for not immediately taking it at face value, but — damn — I hate the internet.

Yes!

Except at Disney World. I hate walking behind slow people.

I think there are all types of good leaders and we need all of them in different capacities.

(There are plenty of ways to be a bad leader, too. We excel at finding those.)

This is such a “you” response.

I love it.

My son is a lot like you, actually
