Memes and Jokes (Part 1)

The term “spatula” is a bit confusing, because it includes a variety of similar utensils. Sometimes, when being “most proper”, it refers to the thing you use to spread and scrape the sides of a bowl with, but any scraper, turner, flipper (& fish slice?) will often just be referred to as a spatula. Not sure how regional that generalization is.

That’s not a spatula.

It’s a fly swat.

Hehe! I have one of those, as well. It does NOT work so well for cooking purposes.

To quote my ancestors “do what now?”

The death of nylon cooking utensils. I have the same problem - silicone is flimsy, metal screws with the pans, and they both suck. I believe my nylon set is about 30+ years old at this point.

That’s the type I usually call a spatula, but others in the US might call it an offset turner (due to the steeper handle angle). I like the square end on it so I can better chop up ground meat when frying it. I also have spatulas that are like the classic Rubbermaid one, often used when mixing things in a bowl or pan and I need to scrape the sides. And I have a few of the small ones (like the ones in @Jeff_AZ 's second photo) for serving desserts. In the US, a “fish spatula” is more the style of this photo, presumably named because it’s easier for turning fragile fish.

I have this one, and it’s not bad. It’s an OXO brand one.

I have never heard it called that, but I have heard it called a “slotted spatula” or a “pancake turner.” The ones you use to mix batter I have heard called a “scraper.” And the dessert ones I’ve heard called a “serving spatula.”

@OBNurseNH I think this one needs to be inspected more closely.

I mean some of it sounds like it would work well. Other part sound… weird.

My thoughts exactly.

I didn’t know you had preferences for “spatula” construction.

Interesting and surprising! Totes fine, and all, everyone can enjoy whatever kitchen implements they like. I just didn’t take you for a “spatula” kind of guy!

I agree. I never heard that (offset turner) either, until recent years when I got a subscription to Cook’s Illustrated (and their website - and so many rabbit holes…). To me, things were just a spatula, and you had to know which one to grab based on the context. I still just say spatula.

So true. So, so true. Definitely don’t want to grab the wrong one. BTDT and… yikes

Every spatula owner should know their spatulas.

Actually can we just amble on to another topic cause I don’t know wtf we are actually talking about anymore and I’m scared.

Is spatula even a real word anymore?

That Wustof spatula seems to be $53 on Amazon. Seems like a lot for a spatula but perhaps I am just not enough of a spatula/pancake turner/offset turner/fish slice aficionado to appreciate it…

Definitely out of my price range! I recently got a cheap one and used it last night on some eggplant. Interesting, but I’ll stick with my others for most things.

I need non metal spatulas, since we have a lot of non-stick pans.

That would be a great idea for our recipe cards on the holidays. We often have multiple recipes going at once.
