I suspect maybe you had to grow up watching the repeats of those old cartoons on TV to really like that movie. Popeye cartoons had a lot of little snide remarks and jokes in every scene and if you didn’t know about them in the movie, the whole thing probably just seemed silly.

I’m not saying that I watched the cartoon a lot, but I can say that I ate Popeye branded spinach straight from the can as a child.

Popeye is not terribly kosher these days. While it definitely pushed the benefits of eating Spinach (which, by the way, was a COMPLETE LIE), it also endorsed violence as a primary means of conflict resolution!

Yes! Definitely to young to really understand the snide remarks but not forget them. :rofl: I watched a show that had this guy drawing in between cartoons. Sunday morning

A few parents in DD grade school banned their kids from watching Looney Tunes and most Disney because of violence. One mom said she didn’t like Disney because Where were all the mom’s??!! :flushed::flushed: At least I knew who to steer clear of. :rofl:

Lol I banned Saturday morning cartoons to eliminate all the begging and whining for toys and cereal I was never going to buy for my kids. I didn’t consider the ‘righteous violence’ aspect until years later. BTW banning sat AM cartoons really did stop all the begging for stuff.

I think that’s one of the biggest advantages of streaming services. The only “TV” my kids ever see is Disney+, Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc., so, no commercials! They don’t know what they’re supposed to be whining for! Of course, they just find other things to whine about, but at least it’s not that!

Love the Wimpy one.

My daughters are adopted and my oldest (DD21) frequently laments that so many of the movies are based on kids losing their parents. :rofl:

Well, there is a reason for the dead parents. Walt and Ron bought a house for their parents when they first had any money at all. The house killed them with a gas leak.

Is that true?? :scream::scream::exploding_head::exploding_head:

Fact check. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hmm half right…

Personally I think the dead parent just give license to make the young protagonist vulnerable and an underdog.
After all, you wouldn’t want the oppressing villain in the hero’s early life to be their actual but dysfunctional parent.

So, only Roy bought the house?
Or only one parent died?
Or they only bought half a house?
Or they were killed by a leek add leek emoji here??

IIRC, his father survived the leak.
