Managing Extra Points

Newbie question here…

We purchased our contract direct at the Riviera in July 2025. We have a February Use Year. At this point in time, we usually take one family trip per year to WDW. We banked our 2025 points to 2026 and will likely bank our 2026 points into 2027. Our next trip is booked (using 2025 banked points) for 4/25/26 - 5/2/26. After this trip, we will have 6 banked points leftover which must be used by 2/1/27. We will likely not travel again to WDW until Spring of 2027. I did add MMB to our membership for calendar year 2026. However, even with the potential to get 24 extra points added to my leftover 6 points, I do not really foresee an opportunity for us to use them. We do not live in Florida, so one-nighters are not really a great option for us.

I predict that this situation of having a few leftover points each year will continue to occur throughout our ownership term. How do you all manage that? Do you rent those points out to David’s or DVC Rental? Is there a process for offering these for transfer/rent directly through the forum to subscribers?

I say this only half joking, but this doesn’t happen if you are always borrowing.

Yes, you can transfer but you are limited to only 1 per year so it’s not always worth it for such a small number of points.

I am going to say this not joking: I have found that the ideal position is to be in a slight borrowing position at the end of each use year. That way you don’t have spare points lying around that you can’t use.

So what I would do if you are going to be in this position for the foreseeable future is to “plus” your vacation slightly by increasing your room size, view, category, or resort for at least one trip so that you will reach an equilibrium with a slight borrowing position.

The other option for that small number of points is to gift them to someone else (you would need to call Member Services together to arrange the transaction). You could sell or rent them but it would be like $60-$100 for 6 points. Not really worth the hassle. Or you can just let them die.

Also it doesn’t even have to be a borrowing position, just use all your past year points so you are able to bank your unused current year points.

I try to get the most out of my points. My first few years I had issues with expiring points. At that time, I had close to enough points to book a 1 night stay. I gave those nights away (I will never rent out my points again after a Covid related experience).

Now, every so often I have too many points. I will try to modify my booking at 7 months to a higher point resort. I have also upgraded to a larger room.

I do think it is possible that this is a temporary problem. The way I use my points now, is different than 7 years ago. You may decide to book a spring vacation at Hilton Head one year, or plan an Aulani trip. You also could plan weekend escapes in the future. As @melcort10 and @Jeff_AZ mentioned, starting to plan how to borrow points can work for you may open up a lot of possibilities.

Thanks all! Yes, I do think this is temporary. In the not-too-distant future, we will be bringing others with us and will likely have to increase our room category. At that time, I will likely be short on points!

To me this would be ideal so that you are using all your past points plus a few of your current points as opposed to the slight barrowing. That way if you move around - cheaper resorts or cheaper dates- the points just go back into the current use year.

Because shifting things around, especially if I have multiple reservations is how I regularly end up with points that look like this

And have to keep meticulous records of what points came from where for my reservation.
