MagicBand+ Interactions at Disneyland Resort

Hello Liners! I went scouring the internet for a list of MagicBand+ interactions at the California parks, and couldn’t find anything comprehensive, so I figured I’d try to make my own!

Please let me know if anything on the list below is missing or inaccurate…

Disneyland Park

  • Rides:

    • Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters
    • Haunted Mansion (heartbeat at exit)
    • Mickey & MInnie’s Runaway Railway (goes off in line)
    • Pirates (flashes yellow and white)
    • Space Mountain
    • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
    • Peter Pan (can supposedly show Tink in her lantern while in line) Edit: Per comment downthread, this effect only works by doing the in line scavenger hunt via the Play Disney Parks app.
  • Interactive Games:

    • Bounty Hunter game in Galaxy’s Edge
  • Parades/Fireworks:

    • Fantasmic show
    • Wondrous Journeys show
    • Paint the Night parade
  • 70th Anniversary Interactions:

    • Main Street USA: Tilly’s Booth at Main Street Cinema
    • Frontierland: Frontierland Booth at Silver Spur Supplies
    • Fantasyland: Window by Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
    • Adventureland: Skipper Lockers at Jungle Cruise
    • Tomorrowland: Autopia

Disney’s California Adventure

  • Rides:

    • Web Slingers (glows red and blue)
    • Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout

Thanks for this list! I love doing this kind of thing at WDW, and I’m hitting DL for the first time in the fall. Will bring your list and will follow here for others.

Does anything exist on the forum for WDW I wonder?

I appreciate you putting this list together. My old magic bands have dead batteries and I’ve been waffling on whether or not to grab a MB+.

Glad to do it! FWIW, if you’re on the fence, I’d spend that money on other niceties at the parks. believe your old magic bands should still work for the core functions (tapping into the park, tapping into LLs), and frankly, the light up interactions at Disneyland are nothing to write home about.

The one exception is the Bounty Hunter game. That’s the coolest use of the MagicBand+ I’ve experienced, and it’s one of the few things that makes Galaxy’s Edge feel alive and interactive. So if you’re into that, I’d say it’s worth it. But otherwise, my recommendation would be to stick with the old bands.

EDIT: Per a comment below, I was wrong. The older versions of magic bands will not work at Disneyland.

I have to agree. The interactions at WDW, for those bronze statues in MK and topiaries in EPCOT are cute, but I don’t think they are worth paying extra for. The few I tried would play a little song or dialogue for a few seconds.

I didn’t get a chance to try the pirate-y treasure hunt experience in adventureland yet. Does magicband+ enhance that experience, I wonder. I think they give you a thingie that works without a magic band.

We’ve never gotten it to set off with the MagicBand+ but maybe you can? We do open up the Parks Play app and play the game for Peter Pan’s line. There’s a scavenger hunt throughout the line and you don’t have to find everything to get the effect of Tink’s lantern. You just have to tal the lantern on the scavenger hunt once you get to that point in the line and then it will prompt you to confirm you’re there then it will telll you to set off the effect and look at the lantern. And that’s how we’ve gotten it to set off. I think once we tried to use our MagicBand+’s and it didn’t work but my kids love the game and always want to play it so it’s never been tested again.

For clarity, I don’t think any non MB+ will work at Disneyland. I agree that using the old ones at WDW is just fine. But in my reading on this a I believe Disneyland only allows MB+. I’m not sure a ‘regular’ / older MB can even be added to the DL app. But maybe I’ll try that and report back. If we’re talking about MB+ that will no longer charge, I agree that should still work for some things at DLR.

You appear to be correct

Absolutely bonkers, and now I want to boycott the MB+! Did the OG MB ever work there?

I’m already eyeing MB+ from Disney store

Disney Cruiselines only works with MB+ as well.

I was there a couple weeks ago. There are places in Downtown Disney that interact with your MB+. I think it was near Sephoria???

When they work on Carnival let me know

i noticed when i was near space mountain, something triggered my MB. No idea what though? It just started lighting up in light blue.

yeah i tried to get this to work, and when it didn’t I asked a CM…who said the same thing you did: you need the app to trigger it.

which is irritating.

Nope. They weren’t a thing at DLR until the MB+. But it is so nice to have them! Makes entrance and LLs so fast in comparison to opening the phone and scanning multiple people at each LL ride.

I’d been debating upgrading, but this is what I’ve been thinking. Getting the phone out and opening the app then reopening after it crashes and then logging in and then getting the bar code just seems not enjoyable. Plus the MB+ will be useful for the as yet unplanned trips to WDW and DLR in the future.

Thanks! I’ve updated the original post to clarify.

Thank you! I’ve added Space Mountain to the list.

The app at Disneyland is actually superior to the one for WDW. We just got back last night and it never crashed one time in 3 days of use. I have always used BG1 to catch the drops (and these are necessary in my opinion to make the most of LLs at DLR), but this trip I kept getting an error code the first day. Switched to the Disneyland app and was shocked at how easy it was for me to catch all of the drops, since I struggle to catch drops with MDE in WDW. There was no ride I couldn’t get at a scheduled drop. It was amazing! We never made it to a park before 9:30am and yet we got so much accomplished.
Anyway, you still should get the MB+ even though the app is good. They are just so convenient!
