On our RCCL cruise last year, I did my first ever karaoke. I really loved it and will seek out doing more of it.
I am curious about song choices on DCL…is it safe to assume that most Disney (popular) tunes would be available? Outside of that, is there a decent selection of options?
On my sailing (2022) there was an enormous catalog to choose from! Disney tunes, sure. But lots of other stuff - classics, current, well-known and even some more obscure stuff! It was not limited in the least! It was a fun time!!
Okay, cool. When I was on Allure of the Seas, I did The Piano Man and Can You Feel The Love Tonight. It was a lot of fun. I had a funny moment during the second song because the cord to the mic came unplugged in the middle of the song so I kept singing while trying to get it plugged back in, and the crowd kind of took over for a few lines.
I feel like I read a recent trip report where a group of girls had practiced a Descendants song that they didn’t end up having! Which is a little surprising given the popularity of that movie. BUT if they don’t have Can you feel the love tonight then they don’t deserve to be called Disney karaoke!
It would be cool if there was a way to lookup songs ahead of the cruise to know what is or isn’t available. I suppose some people just like the spontaneity. Even on Allure, I kept thinking of songs to sing, and would request it, and they’d look it up and be like, “Nope. Not available.” Probably ran through a half dozen songs before I found two that were available.
Like, right now, if I were to show up, I’d want to know if they had “500 Miles” available. But even then, there are a few different versions of that song out there which feel very different from one another.
All I know is that from walking by the D Lounge and other lounges where it was happening (Dream earlier this year), sounded like a wide variety of Disney and non Disney. Not sure of an online catalog posted anywhere, but I think they use a 3rd party service for the list so very possible to be missing things you’d expect Disney to have.
Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to karaoke at all despite it being somewhat of a priority. Either there was something else to do, too tired, or wasn’t in that mood at the time.
Hope you find time in the schedule to do it and get songs you want!
Yep, this was us on the Magic three weeks ago. The person who was setting up the karaoke equipment in D Lounge about an hour before told us he had the song (“Life is Sweeter”, from the first Descendants movie) but then when we tried to sign up right at the start of the activity, they said they didn’t have it after all (they also didn’t have a second Descendants song we asked about). Having the catalogue in advance might have saved us some tears from our little girl gang…
This must happen to them regularly, because when they opened the activity they announced “Please don’t just leave your request and go, but WAIT for our thumbs up to confirm that we have the song before you go and sit down again!”
I believe that they usually schedule karaoke more than once per cruise? We saw it at least once during the first two days of our cruise (but did not attend that one - don’t remember why). So if you really want to be prepared, you could check during that first night to check for a few songs, and then come back to register on the second or third time the activity is held?
My kids have done karaoke a bunch on the DCL ships and just remembered to ask them now and this is what they’ve done (some together, some alone):
What is this feeling? - Wicked
Die with a Smile - Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars
Almost There- Tiana
A Million Dreams - Greatest Showman
They’ve also watched a fair amount of it and said it’s mostly Disney but also a lot of generic pop. My son did list of a bunch of examples too: California Girls, High Hopes, Dancing Queen, Stressed Out. So there is at least a good-sized selection of contemporary pop. And of course Disney.
I haven’t ever tried to search for an online list to check, but the best bet will be someone on the ship who can check with the entertainment team as the list likely changes up to add new popular ones and take off less utilized ones.
I did find another forum (DisBoards) where someone took a picture of every page of the song book from their cruise on the Magic…but it was from 2016, so definitely not recent. Still, I might as well consider that a decent source of options to draw from unless I find something more recent.
