Intensity of Rides at Universal vs. Disney

I’m a little nervous about some of the rides at Universal. I’m wondering how scary they feel compared to certain rides at Disney. For example, at Disney, I loved Tron, Rise of the Resistance, Millenum Falcon, Space Mountain, and even Rockin Roller Coaster. I like the Avatar ride but had to close my eyes during a couple of parts. I did not like Everest or Guardians of the Galaxy - those were too intense for me. Do you think I will like Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure, Battle at the Ministry, Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Escape from Gringotts, SpiderMan, Mine Cart Madness, Monsters Unchained?

Here’s my take:

Battle at the Ministry - not particularly intense, some shaking and rocking and very small drops

Hiccups - This was one of our favorite rides in Epic Universe! It has a couple of launches, but less intense than RnRC or Tron imo.

Gringotts - It’s been a few years since I rode this, but I recall it being pretty tame, it’s not very fast and I think there’s one drop. It’s a pretty unique concept as it’s kind of like a large slow-ish coaster mixed with a dark ride.

Spiderman - This one’s not fast, but it’s kind of rough. Considering all the rides you’ve done, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Mine Cart Madness - you’ll be fine! It’s a family coaster

Monsters Unchained - This is very different from the other rides, it’s not fast, but it does rock around quite a bit. It might make some people dizzy, but for me it wasn’t as bad as Forbidden Journey which is the same ride technology.

Hagrid I’ve never ridden unfortunately.

I’ll also add that Curse of the Werewolf is kind of similar to GotG in terms of ride tech (similar spinning vehicle on a track), but more tame.

Here are a couple of threads that might help you:

  • This post in the Motion Sickness Thread gives a rundown of all attractions at UOR and their intensity. This includes Epic, but I haven’t been on these rides myself so this is based on what others had reported.
  • Within that post I reference @darkmite2’s earlier post with his perspective (pre-Epic).

  • Hagrid’s is worth trying. It is similar in intensity to Guardians of the Galaxy, but without the spinning element and it is outdoors which helps (fresh air + seeing where you’re going)
  • SpiderMan is great and not too intense, but it does make me mildly ill if that is a concern.
  • Escape from Gringotts is pretty tame but it has a couple of brief, fast-moving parts and elements with screens (which could mildly affect those prone to motion sickness)

I have no personal experience with the others, but if I were you I’d give Battle at the Ministry, Hiccup, and Mine Cart Madness a try. Monsters Unchained - depends on how you feel about darkness and spookiness; not so much an issue of thrills.

I think that Hiccups is like Slinky and Mine Cart is more like Seven Dwarfs. Battle at the Ministry isn’t like anything I could pinpoint at WDW but kinnnnnda like ToT but no huge drops.

I think you’ll most likely be fine on all the rides you mentioned and even curse of the werewolf. GotG made me a bit sick this time and I had a horrible ride in the last car on EE. It banged my head hard. Of those you mentioned at universal, Hagrids is the most intense but if you love Tron you’ll be fine. But I was fine on all the others at Universal as far as nausea or headaches go. I’m not scared tho. For me it’s more how the ride makes me feel as I age that is making me not want to ride some rides like hulk. Skip hulk, velocicoaster and stardust racers for sure.

Here’s my report after our trip. We had a great time! I rode Hagrid’s, Gringotts, Forbidden Journey, Monsters Unchained, Hiccups Wing Gliders, Mine Cart Madness, and Escape from the Ministry. Hagrid’s pushed me a bit but I would ride it again. The backwards portion was a little intense, as was the final launch. The part that happens after devil’s snare was not bad at all, if you are expecting it, which I was. Gringotts was fine - one drop, and you are kind of suspended before it happens, but it wasn’t too bad. Hiccups was similar to Hagrid’s but less intense, as people have said, and it was a lot of fun. Mine Cart was great - no big drops. We rode it right at closing, which was fun. If there are long lines all day at Mine Cart, try getting in line 5 minutes before closing. For us, it said 2 hour wait at that point, but was only 1 hour (I think because no new Express Pass people were getting in line after closing and bumping back the regular queue). Forbidden Journey was difficult to ride - the screens make the motion seem so much more intense. Several people in our group who don’t normally have issues with motion sickness did have issues on Forbidden Journey. I closed my eyes for big chunks of it and was OK. Escape from the Ministry was fun and not as intense as far as motion sickness. Queue line was amazing. Now finally - Monsters Unchained: My favorite ride of the trip. Same ride system as Forbidden Journey but totally different experience. Much less use of screens, and much more use of animatronics, which looked really cool. The motion of the ride vehicles seems much smoother to me than FJ. No one in our group got motion sickness on Monsters and we all had fun. The waits are rarely long. We rode it twice. I think it’s the most underrated ride in the park.

As someone contemplating a Universal trip but not big on more intense rides, thanks so much for reporting back. I’m glad your group had a great time!
