Hotel Strategy with Epic

I’m in the planning stages of a trip. This used to be pretty straightforward in terms of lodging and express passes for staying on site. But the equation has definitely changed.

7 nights. 2 adults, 3 teens. Holiday week. 5-day park ticket. Express passes are a must.

Initially I figured we’d stay at Hard Rock (we love it!), and just get express passes for a day at Epic. But it’s not so simple, because you have to pick a specific day weeks in advance. So if the weather ends up being bad on the day you choose you’re stuck.

I could get a suite at Cabana Bay. Buy the express pass out of pocket and all in ends up being about 10% cheaper than Hard Rock. I get the flexibility but a lesser location that requires transportation everywhere. Plus only the standard express is available as a multi-day option, not unlimited.

Wild card: We could also stay at Hard Rock and jump to a 2-day Express for Epic, which gives us a 4-day window. But also bumps our cost by $900+.

If UOR offered a product that was express unlimited that came with standard expresss for Epic, this would be a lot easier. Or, allow you to purchase express for one day at Epic but allowed a range of days to use it would be even better.

Thoughts? Anything I’m missing?

Sounds like you’ve got a handle on complexity. Does changing your days change the cost significantly? That’s the only thing I can think of, and I doubt it will get you anywhere, but might be worth a look.

You might also consider a split stay with a couple of nights at Helios, which would allow easier access to Epic (so that you could rope drop key attractions as you wish, maybe get them right before closing, etc.). Several have had success with this option.

You could also do a split Aventura (boat from Sapphire Falls equal to boat ride from Portofino) and a couple of days at Stella Nova (very short walk to Epic plus express. If you are willing to hop the 1x per day express is a very good option.

Sounds like you’ve got a handle on complexity.

Thanks, but I was hoping I DIDN’T have a handle on it and there was a better option available :joy:

It’s a holiday week, so changing dates isn’t an option. Split stay isn’t a bad idea but again… if bad weather happens to roll in at that time, we’re kind of SOL. Plus I’m kind of a weirdo… I hate moving hotels mid trip.

Aventura would be a decent choice but I can get a suite at Cabana Bay for just a shade more than their standard rooms. Suites at Aventura are pricey. I mean, I don’t need a suite but with five of us, two queens and a rollaway are tight, even if we don’t spend much time in the room.

Speaking of… how is Cabana Bay these days? We’ve only stayed at Hard Rock. For us, the size, vibe, location, etc is perfect. And oh my that lobby smell… I can’t get enough!

Someone else can speak to it I’m sure. I liked Cabana Bay when I stayed there years ago, but my most recent stay was Hard Rock. I know we will be back because one of my DDs insists that’s the only place we can stay now!

Can you change your park tickets to three park tickets?

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand the question. Park tickets will already be a 3-park ticket (might go 4-park for the Volcano Bay option).

I did the same math as you and found that with Undercover Tourist (or another retailer) I could get 3-park express cheaper than 1-park Epic. So we held out for a deal at Helios and stayed there with separate EP rather than a premier with EP.

It works well with any hotel. I like Cabana Bay but Helios is a HUGE upgrade in every way. But if the savings is enough, I would do Cabana Bay again.

Then I would stay cheaper and get the multi day express and hop. You can go on your favorites at each park, each day.

If this thrip is this year, Volcano Bay will be closed.

Edited to add: express passes will increase in price, so the sooner you can buy, the more you will save.

In the past we always stayed Portofino and were spoiled with unlimited express, but for our trip end of May 2026 we flipped and stayed cheaper hotel and spent our money on five day park to park tickets with the limited express. I thought we would be disappointed because my teen boys love repeat riding but we loved our week and the flexibility to visit Epic every day! We stayed Surfside two bedroom, and yes it’s bus everywhere but it really was not bad. I would do Surfside two bedroom combined with park to park and limited express over and over again — it was a great week for us. And that’s coming from a family that always did Portofino before Epic entered the picture.

This is great intel, natguidry, thank you!

So much this.

It’s much better to repeat every favorite ride every day vs doing a handful of rides multiple times in one day.

Honestly, if I repeat a ride in the same day I want them spaced apart. I don’t like back to back same rides (unless it’s LwtL, then I’ll make an exception ).

Oh and don’t forget to price those hotels with annual pass rates — for our May 2026 week I priced full package (hotel and tickets +Exp 3 adults) vs a “custom build package” = 1 seasonal AP, AP hotel rate, still 3 adult park to park tickets +Exp(since the AP wouldn’t get us in Epic) and the custom build package was cheaper — and mom walked away with an annual pass (that’s hasn’t even been activated yet cause I didn’t need it the week of our trip)

Although seasonal and power passes may be blocked out if it is a holiday week.

Ah yes true!! Must check the blackout dates on APs

Definitely check out the suites at dockside/surfside vs Cabana Bay. They have so much room (a separate bedroom) and I actually like the hotel better than CB.

I love the premier hotels as well but the cost can’t be justified anymore unless you are able to stumble upon a super great rate. I opted for the single use express for my upcoming trip as well. I love the idea of being able to head to Epic every night and hit my favorites. Of course with park hours being slashed in November, my night will be much shorter than expected.

I’ve never stayed at Endless Summer but one thing I’ll say for Cabana Bay is if you are going to Volcano Bay it is awesome. Almost a must.

Is the only place to get this is on the official UO website? I couldn’t see this option at UT or AT.

On UT when you get to the ticket page for Universal, there is a drop drown for ticket types

Here is the page I was on.
