I have a trip planned that I am not sure I will be able to take. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make a decision until I’m already in the 30 day window. I’m trying to decide if I should keep the trip hoping I can take it and deal with points in holding or just let it go. I’m especially struggling because my trip is to DL and I was able to book all three of my nights at the Grand Californian without owning there! This will not be easily reproduced.
A few questions about points in holding:
-
When you hit 60 days out on another reservation that you already have booked, can you swap out the points used for that with the points in holding?
-
If you make a change to the points used for a reservation in the 30 day window does it put those points in holding? In my situation I am waiting for some points from a resale contract to load. If I have to be at risk for losing points, I’d rather they be the banked points from this contract than the current use year points I used to make this reservation.
-
I’ve never had points in holding before. Aside from the basics of not being able to bank them and booking in 60 days, are there any other considerations?
-
I’m a planner so I don’t usually book last minute. How hard is it to book in the 60 day window?
Any insights are appreciated. Thank you!!

I cannot answer most of your questions but if you need to cancel, call. There have been multiple reports of MS waiving holding “one time only”. It is not guaranteed, but it does happen.

The only thoughts I have–I hope you get to take your trip!

@JustKeepSmiling This is a good idea! If anyone deserves to have this waived, it’s you.
I think I told you I had points in holding once and was able to use them without any issues. But they weren’t nearly as many as would be required for three nights at the Grand Cal!

I believe you can do this, except that you can’t swap the points if the swap would allow you to retain a home resort advantage with points from another resort. Not sure I’m explaining that clearly.
I try not to book DVC last minute, but I do it sometimes, and so far I have decent luck finding something. I hope you get to keep your Grand Californian reservation because that sounds awesome. But I also hope whatever contingencies you are facing will work out for the best for you.

If worst comes to worse, you could probably rent that stay to someone to potentially recoup some of the cost?
I am impressed with the VGC! I was able to get two nights there one time. Right now I have been on a waitlist for two nights in April. I added myself right at 7:00.01 but no luck so far.

I didn’t even consider this as a possibility. Thank you. That helps.
Thank you. Me too!
Yes, I agree. I figured it would need to be a reservation made at the 7 month or less mark. I knew exactly what you meant.
I was afraid of that.
I actually only had two nights to begin. I waitlisted the third night and was blown away when it came through! I love the DLH but I really want to stay at the VGC sometime and this feels like the opportunity
Thanks everyone for your help.
