Educational Disney + Kidcot and Wilderness Explorers

Hey Liners!

I have sort of an interesting assignment with some friends who are visiting just for a day next week (I’m local). It’s a Mom (one of my besties) and her 5 yo. They are from overseas and can only do one day in the parks. Because of Mom’s job (she works for a small wildlife park in another country), they want to see more of the exhibit/educational type things rather than rides and big shows (though I’ll sneak some of those in along with characters anyway).

First, I’ve never really focused on Wilderness Explorers or Kidcot. We’re doing the morning at AK and afternoon at EP (obviously highlights only w/ the amount of time we have). Are there particular stations/locations for either of those that are better than others? Is there any starting point that you need to go to first to pickup like a booklet or something?

I’ve actually never been out to the Conservation Station (shameful I know!). How much of a time commitment is that, and what’s actually out there?

Other things I have in mind, but do you have some educational Disney things in mind that maybe I’m missing? (obviously we won’t have time to hit all of them, but just building a list so I can pivot where needed)

Animal Kingdom

  • Animal exhibits / Trails
  • Winged Encounters show
  • Bird show

Epcot

  • Country exhibits
  • Journey of Water
  • Living w/ the Land
  • Nemo, Aquarium, Crush

You can start WE at any of the stops all the WE CM’s have the books. I recommend asking the trails CM’s questions as well, they love to share facts with guests.

You can ask at GS at the front of the park if there are any medical procedures happening at Conservation Station that day. It’s a really interesting and cool thing to see if they are interested in that. I also enjoy the Animation Experience out there.

The train is how you get out there and that starts at 9:30. Then you walk maybe 5 minutes to the main area with some animals (domestic?) to pet, and inside the building the viewing window for the [possible] animal care procedure that might be going on. Another part of the building has the Animation Experience which is a 30 minute maybe (guessing here) how to draw along with a Disney CM.
We only did the care experience once, before we knew to ask at GS, and lucked out that the CMs were doing a wellness check of a kimodo dragon. The 8 yo with us stood at the viewing window for a solid 2 hours watching everything. Other guests came and went. I’ve done the Animation Experience several times and have only one time seen a care procedure going on.

Then you walk back down to the station and wait for the train.

In your situation and certainly if Guest Services says no care procedure is planned, I’d focus on the Trails. And the Bird Flight, https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/entertainment/animal-kingdom/winged-encounters/

We have been early guests on the Trails at AK and had great conversations with the CMs on the trails. I think the one Trail opens before the other. There are numerous trails around the Tree to look at the carvings.

At Epcot I would enter the Living Seas from aound the side closer to the Land Pavilion. I’d look at the big tank, the manatees and I’d do Turtle Talk with Crush.

The time spent on Nemo I would rather spend at Journey of Water. Depending on the amount of other guests and your time constraints, you could spend some time here playing with the water features.

Regarding the KidSpots, I love these when we get talkative CMs. Sometimes we’ve had a country with a CM who isn’t outgoing. Or something.

The article says an international momento. The last time I did this (2019) we had postcards from each country in a ziploc bag printed to look like a suitcase. Very easily carried throughout the day.

Caveat: we’ve tried a few times to stop at each country to get a snack or something, in an afternoon, and have never made it all the way around. I think we’re too easily distracted.

If you will be needing to eat, have supper at Coral Reef and watch the life in the big tank, instead of going inside and upstairs.

I wanna second this - when we went recently the servers were even able to answer questions for us about the marine life - we saw a great encounter between Tolstoy the sea turtle and Tina the ray and got all the backstory as well! Plus you’re seated with great food!

Balancing Mum and child interests could be tricky. For example along the walking trails at AK are things like the aviaries, bat stations, the hippo pool etc. But how interesting that will be to a 5 year old is questionable.
I would plan some time chatting to the cultural representatives at the Safari entrance.
Harambe, whilst fictional, has some great theming, IMO some of the best anywhere at WDW.
Also the ride queue for Kali has the deforestation aspect to it.

Wilderness Explorers takes a long time. There’s no way to do it in a full day, let alone a half day. I suggest collecting the booklet and doing any stops that you come across.

At Epcot, Spaceship Earth is a must - if you’ll be there before it closes.
