DVC Rule Change to Impact Walking?

Yeah I think they mean leading reservations (which still work for ADRs, though using them for LLs is problematic due to the cancellation window being greater than the LL booking window). There may be a plan to address leading reservations, but this particular DVC rule change wouldn’t impact it because it only applies at 11 months. Unless I’m missing something.

It is stressful, especially when your dates are inflexible. But it’s not necessarily international members that are booking. There’s a rush to book those standard rooms, whether for 3 nights or 7,

But at least until now, once you manage to book the initial week you know you can extend it for as long as you want to. Now it means another lottery a week later, with more at stake. No luck, no vacation.

Sounds right. Like i said. …mush brain.

I really hope they allow modifications by phone, at least in cases like yours where you’re merely extending.

Interesting! I’ve heard walking ressies can be problematic, but it would be unfortunate if this poorly impacts international or other long-trip owners.

I am not trying to be mean, but isn’t this the case with your original week as well? Like you have just as much chance as getting the 2nd week as you did getting the 1st week? If you can’t get the first week, I guess that also means no vacation.

Yes but the stakes aren’t as high because they won’t have borrowed points yet that can’t be put back to the next use year.

The second week might be the most popular week though, so no I don’t have the same chance of getting it, As of yesterday, if I could book the first night I knew I could book the vacation we wanted. There was no way of not managing to book the remaining nights, no matter if it was NYE.

As of now, I book the first week. Having banked and borrowed, perhaps bought OTUPs, and I want another 3 nights.

Then I can’t book those 3 nights. Borrowed points can’t be used, OTUPs wasted. Even if I decide we’ll book those nights at POP I’ve lost those points since I can’t use them.

When we bought into DVC we knew we could always book the vacation we wanted once we got the first night, Now that simply isn’t the case. And that is what I will be taking up with them.

None of that would have happened if I couldn’t book the first week.

Well hopefully they figure a way to fix this for you!

I suppose few walkers would have enough points to hold onto 2 weeks with the intention of booking just 1. But then again, the amount of points some people have has astounded me before!

I bet some people would be scared to lose the days entirely. I wouldn’t chance it.

Definitely worth a call.

Could you add a day at a time? (If available)

This is what they are removing the ability to do. You used to be able to do this online by modifying your reservation. Now you would have to cancel and rebook with the additional day.

I think I was wondering if you called in? But that makes sense.

That is an open question, but if you can call in to “modify” that would resolve the fears of those booking 7+ day reservations.

I’ve used cancel rebook to move a reservation from my BCV contract to my AKV contract. At exactly 7 months I waitlisted at BCV with my AKV contract. At two in the morning I dropped the BCV room booked with the BCV contract and tried to pick it up with the AKV contract. It worked until it threw an error on the last step. 3 days later my waitlist came through, so I think the waitlist system picked it up before I could, and then there was a delay until it was finalized by a CM.

So in my experience cancel and rebook is high risk. I tried to pick it up by modifying an existing AKV reservation so it was low stakes.

Oh that is interesting. I wonder if the system can snag something you drop for someone else’s waitlist. I had always thought waitlisting was fully manual for CMs but maybe not.

Only once you’re 11 months out from the checkout date.

I have wondered that too. I have lost a ressie before assuming it would pop right up in inventory for me to re-grab.

But I have also snagged things I have on waitlist myself which contradicts the theory.

I’d love a BTS view and understanding of how it works

I have never understood how to ‘walk’ a reservation; this group has attempted to explain it to me but it just buzzed right over my head :woman_shrugging:  But if this new policy makes it easier for ppl to get a reservation, by leveling the playing field, I’m all for it. So far, we’ve been lucky w/ reservations and waitlists, but waitlists are stressful too.

I saw a separate article that suggested that this is not necessarily going to make it any easier to get the “hard” reservations, but it will make it more fair. There’s always more people who want the value rooms or inexpensive studios for holiday weekends than there is inventory.

What I am hoping for is that it makes regular reservations a little bit easier/less stressful to get without stressing as people are walking over the boring dates.

My understanding on the waitlist was that the system grabs and holds it, then a CM has to process it. What happened to me fit exactly that pattern.
