DLR questions - end of August

hi all,

questions from a newbie. some background, DH and I have been to DLR years ago (i am not keen to age myself here!) … think pre-smartphone era (and in some ways, that feels way less stressful than today). it was a weekday in january and we enjoyed wandering around from ride to ride, soaking in the atmosphere. no lines, no crowds, no plan. this time, i feel like i need an advanced degree to plan out our upcoming day! as an aside, i’m not thrilled about being stuck on my phone all day (disney app, lines app) … especially because my kids don’t have phones yet and i’m trying to model a less-tethered life for them.

heading back for one day with tween boys in tow as part of a larger socal trip … monday, august 26, planning DL & DCA with LL, staying across the street at park vue, would like to head back to hotel for an afternoon break and/or out for dinner before heading back to DLR in the evening. per the DLR calendar, space mountain, monorail, railroad, explorer canoes, (and others) are closed for refurbishment. FWIW, my kiddos are not princess or mickey fans (the latter, i know). we’ve watched videos of the attractions at DL and DCA and they’re most interested in star wars, avengers, cars, pixar.

i’ll list out all of my questions here and appreciate any/all advice:

1a. wondering if anyone has any thoughts on halloween screams (930 pm) or WOC (9 pm)? is it possible to do both? (or even worth it?) my oldest has seen Inside Out 2 and loved it … so i’m leaning toward WOC.

1b. if we’re doing WOC, do we need to be in the ‘reserved viewing area’? and if so, how early do we need to be there?

1c. per disney’s website, it states that virtual queue is “currently being used for World of Color - ONE”. does that mean there are no other virtual queues?

  1. CL per the predictor is 3 … does that seem accurate/likely? and really, what does that mean, IRL?

  2. i’ve plugged in all of the prioritized attractions into various customized touring plans and now i’m not sure which order we should do the day … DL and then DCA? or DCA and then DL?

  3. we are comfortable using single rider options where available … will this save us time in certain lines? and is there a way to ‘program’ this into a customized plan?

  4. right now, if i stitch together two customized plans, we’re done around 5/530 pm. any thoughts on what we can do in the evening after we return from dinner before the evening show? (don’t judge … i want to go to tacos los cholos for dinner)

i’ll probably have more questions but i’ll start with this batch. thanks so much in advance for your help!

It’s possible but not extremely easy to do both, and you will miss the first few minutes of 930 Halloween screams (which will be projections only, no pyro bursts). If your family love Halloween things then Halloween Screams is great. We love Nightmare before Christmas and Haunted Mansion and both of those play a part of the Halloween Screams so we love watching that. But if your family tend towards more classic Disney & Pixar, WOC - One is a fantastic show that weaves through Disney, Pixar and also includes a big Marvel and Star Wars sections. So it’s a very great choice.

There is a standby section along the bridge that goes towards the Lamplight Lounge that has a phenomenal view of the fountains and great views of the water screens and Mickey Wheel. For a front of the rail spot in that standby area you want to head to area around 60 min. in advance. You may be able to snag one at 45-50 min. in advance. And anything closer than that you will be behind people.

For the reserved viewing you’ll be in the show area in front of the Lagoon and as long as you get a railing spot in any section you will have a decent view of everything, but the closer you are the more spray you will feel/wet you will get. And also, the closer you go towards the Golden Zephyr/Jumpin’ Jellyfish, the more distorted some of the water screens are. We usually like a railing towards the back in the reserved viewing area and will bring dinner/snacks and eat while we wait in the 45-50 min. before showtime.

Right now the only other virtual queue is for Haunted Mansion Holiday. I do believe you can hold both of them at once, since one is an attraction and one a show. I haven’t checked or verified that though as it’s been a few years since DLR had both a ride and show available for VQ and the Haunted Mansion ride VQ has only been up a couple weeks now. But it was the case the last time there was both a ride and show with a VQ.

It means based on historical data of tracked wait times for the date it is expected that the wait times between 9 (or 10am) through 5pm will be at a 3 (out of 10) meaning they are expected to be on the lower end of what is possible. Middle of the day can still get fairly busy but if it is truly a 3 crowd level, you should be able to breeze through most of the morning, with only the very middle of the day being a bit backlogged at headliner attractions and then as the evening goes on, lighten back up, especially during parades or nighttime shows. What a 3 doesn’t mean is that walkways will be clear and/or the park will be staffed to output/throughput the most efficiently and so you may experience Disney staffing a lower level due to lower demand and therefore more lines build for things like a QS with only 1-2 registers staffed or less entertainment offered to draw crowds into and away from lines like you would see in the 7-10 crowd level range. With a later August date when more and more schools are back in session, you could do alright and still get a lower crowd overall. But being a Monday when all passholders are unblocked and being a weekend adjacent day on a value day (meaning 1 day tickets are priced their cheapest), I would brace for it to be a mix of moderately busy at least. And not staffed to maximize any chokepoints.

The most common recommendation is to start at DCA, knock out all the priorities there before lunch (easy to do & even easier if you’re willing to spend $$ on the skip the line Multipass and Singlepass options), then hop to DL and maximize the rest of the time there. If you choose WOC for your nighttime show, you could back-track for WOC and then still hop back to DL for the last hour or so of DL operations.

Yes, Matterhorn, Space Mtn, Millenium Falcon, Radiator Springs Racers and Incredicoaster all have Single Rider Lines. Space, Incredicoaster and Racers all get very long at night and Incredicoaster doesn’t necessarily save time if it is all that long. But Racers and Space still can save time even if long. There isn’t a way to plug it into the plan, but you can make note of it and then it will save even more time on your plan when you use it.

Also, for Monsters Inc if that is at all a ride you’re wanting to do and you’re willing to split up in groups of 2 ask the CM at the front if they are giving out buddy passes. If they are they will give you the buddy pass and direct you up the exit to be loaded as groups of 2 when they need to fill in the 3rd row. They used to do this sometimes on Toy Story but I haven’t seen it in a long while. Monsters Inc still does it. And Soarin’ and Indy don’t officially do one, but they do commonly call down the line asking for parties of 2 or a single rider. So if you’re willing to split up again like that, you can. But not guaranteed to get 2 calls for parties of 2 as often to really save time for the whole group.

Re-ride any favorites of the day. Or take time to see some of the smaller or more walkthrough attractions you skipped. If you go with DCA, then both Avengers Campus and CarsLand have great lighting/nighttime ambiance. Also the Animation Building in Hollywoodland is a great diversion just with the vaulted lobby having 360 degree screens that show animated clips and art-work for classic Disney and a few Pixar shows with music and lights, it’s about a 20 min. lip and one of my favorite places to soak in some Disney animation magic. There’s also the Animation Academy where every half hour there’s a character drawing lesson and they post the schedule in the lobby in the morning, so you can see if there’s a favorite that evening you want to aim to come back for. Turtle Talk with Crush (same as in Epcot) and Sorcerer’s Workshop (a hands-on walkthrough demonstrating how animation works & is unique to DL) are also off the lobby and fun diversions. If you choose the DL nighttime show I would ride the train in a full loop around to see all the stations and scenery. The railroad has some unique and scenic views plus between the Tomorrowland and Main St train stations there’s a diorama of the Grand Canyon that then moves to back in time with dinos (all animatronic). So a fun little unique bit. Also, Galaxy’s Edge is so beautiful at night and waits for Millenium Falcon can get quite low so I would definitely check that out if you want a re-ride. Tomorrowland IMHO is also much improved with nighttime ambiance and ligting, so I usually like to save all the rides we want to do in Tomorrowland (except Space Mtn unless we’re doing it last) to do at night, so I’m walking through that lit-up better ambiance.

Any more questions, feel free to definitely ask! Happy to help with all planning!

lola, thank you so much for all of the amazing information! appreciate your generosity and kindness!

i’ve re-jigged the plans and have a few more questions…

  1. if we hit DCA first, it seems that we’ll be done by about 10 am. then, i’m thinking we add in a break and make our way over to DL. our last ride in DCA per the custom plan is TSMM. how long does it take to get over to DL?

  2. because i’m using two custom plans, the system isn’t suggesting any LL for some of our earlier DL rides even though wait times are longer. more specifically, the custom plan has us hitting buzz lightyear and matterhorn first … and matterhorn has a 20 minute wait time. would it be recommended to ‘insert’ a LL for matterhorn while we’re at DCA and if so, how do i do this on the custom plan for DL?

  3. the DL plan has us starting at buzz/matterhorn around 1030 am … i suspect my kids might want to hit RR, millennium, and/or star tours first. what do you think of this re-jigging? (my guys are pretty easy going and will be fine if i explain that the experts recommend this specific order!)

  4. i’ve been reading the unofficial guide for 2024 and it seems the book recommends to hit RSR first. in my custom plan, it actually shows up 5th at around 9:20 am. should i be concerned here? the book talks about 3 hour waits during peak season! is it really that much different/better on a CL 3 day?

@lolabear_la has already provided her usual treasure trove of advice, so I’ll just share a quick word of caution from the perspective of visiting DLR for the first time last month after usually focusing on WDW: the projected wait times on the TP tool are not very accurate for DLR (MUCH less accurate than for WDW), as there is not enough data coming in - and it sounds to me like you’re getting some underestimated timings in your plan.

For RSR for example, we were at DCA on a CL3 day last month and I don’t believe the wait time ever dropped below 1hr, and most of the time it was 70-80 min. For RSR specifically you can absolutely avoid that by going in the single rider lane (I had read in DLR chat that it’s usually a 5-10 min wait for SR around 11am and found that to be accurate on the two days we did it). But for other rides you may want to just give a bit of extra time for waits and headliners (which it sounds you have), just to manage expectations.

I do want to add the same caution that @NTEI highlighted on vastly underestimated on wait times in the touring plan. However, if you plan to use the Multipass or Singlepass it is a lot easier to manage in DLR and you can simply move down the priority list of what runs out first (see the pinned thread for DLR’s system to figure that out) and use the plan more of a checklist rather than strict order of things as you move from Lightning Lane to Lightning Lane with the non-Lightning lanes scattered between. And I wouldn’t spend the time forcing the plan to customize your Lightning Lanes, rather make note of where you’ll expect to use them.

Also DL still has restrictions on hopping in place so even if you are done with DCA by 10am, hopping isn’t possible until 11am. So definitely be prepared to take a snack/sunscreen/bathroom break and find a few other possible filler attractions if indeed you’re all done with everything by 10am.

As for deciding the order between RR/Milenium/Star Tours or Matterhorn/Buzz. I would base it on what Lightning Lanes you’re able to get at what time. You’ll want to make sure that if you’re doing Indy/Space Mtn you have those before they run out, but if one of the others that you’re excited about is an immediate return that you can tap into and then get the next of your Indy/Space Mtn lightning lanes that will run out earlier, then no harm in doing that. Buzz is likely to be an easy wait that may not require a lightning lane and if the level truly is a CL 3 Millenium may not require one either. But Matterhorn probably still will benefit from a Lightning Lane. So I woudl work that in. For RR, if they’re most excited about that and it’s a must-do and with just one day, I would absolutely chose to get the Singlepass for it to skip the line. The experience itself is about 20 minutes start to finish and the line before that is at best case 40 minutes and usually more like 60-75 min midday.

And then lastly, for RSR. I would not recommend it first because you’ll be going on a Monday when DCA has early entry for onsite hotel guests and even though RSR doesn’t open until regular park open, early entry guests who are able to walk freely around most of the park, are able to begin forming a line at the entrance after hitting one or two other rides, and often do start that in the last 10 or so minutes of that early entry.

What this means is that as a non-early entry guest to get a shorter wait time you need to be first at the rope and win the footrace to the attraction entrance where 90% of the rope drop crowd goes. If you’re not first and fast, you’ll easily end up with a 50-60 min wait at the expense of doing one or two other headliner rides with shorter waits before they begin to build.

Sometimes right after rope drop there can be a dip in the wait times back down to 40 min but you’ll need to be in Carsland to capitalize on that as most guests at DLR are well trained to watch the app and chase dips in the wait times. So you really do have to have a bit of luck in being in the right spot when rides experience those to really get those moments.

Another reason why Touring Plans struggles with DLR plans is that while there are some defined traffic patterns in the parks, there are also a lot of unpredictable inputs and impact them and make it tough to always say, this is always the best.

So I agree with the optimized plan to not do it first, but unfortunately it will mean a likely 50-60 min wait in the standby. You can either pay the price for the SinglePass to bypass most of that or if you’re ok to not ride together, the single rider line is a great time saver, especially in the morning. It’s not open right away usually so coming after 9am is a good way to check on it.

thank you @lolabear_la and @NTEI … i’m going to read the pinned thread!

appreciate all of the help and advice.

i’ll be back with more questions, i’m sure!

I don’t know if anyone answered this for you yet, but it’s only about 250 feet from gate-to-gate, or 5 minutes or less. The entrance gates face each other. :slightly_smiling_face:

excellent, thank you, @mkmuzzy ! here’s to hoping we can be at DL at 11 am.

i’ve been tinkering with the customized plan and this is what it has spit out so far. i feel like the DCA output is ‘tighter’ than the DL output … but perhaps that’s because of time of day with DCA first/early.

could i kindly ask for your input on this order?

DCA (starting at 8 am)

  • soaring
  • monsters
  • guardians
  • web slingers
  • RSR
  • incredicoaster
  • TSMM

DL (after 11 am)

  • thunder mountain
  • indiana jones
  • jungle cruise (still debating on whether to skip this)
  • pirates
  • RSR
  • millennium
  • bobsleds
  • buzz lightyear
  • star tours

and, do you think we can realistically be done around 3-4 pm? we’ll return to the park for WOC and any other repeats after dinner.

thank you!

I would not recommend Soarin as the first ride. Frequently they are only using 1 theater at park opening which makes lines longer. Many start on the Pier with TSMM and Incredicoaster.

hi @daw623 - thanks for that tip! if i move incredicoaster and/or TSMM up, when/where do you recommend soaring should be placed?

Unfortunately I’m not sure. I don’t make plans anymore, just go with the flow based on wait times. But I do go frequently so if I miss a ride this trip I’ll catch it next trip. My DCA touring is also very different from most people because I’m all about riding GotG as many times as I can. I’m sure someone else will be able to answer your questions.

There is no way you are getting through that DCA list in 3 hours. RSR is probably over an hour and Soaring will be close to an hour.

If it were me and I wanted to make sure I got through all of the DCA things without having to worry about TSMM/Incredicoaster having a slow start (which they often do & if they do you don’t know until you get back to the pier to see them not open & then with no other close by options for you to pivot to for an advantage on your list), I would plan for the below order starting in a place that does allow for pivoting and has much less chance to cause hiccups if the first ride or two has a slow start. And also watch for the attractions that can potentially add capacity as needed and when they do will show lower wait times when they do & pivot accordingly (Guardians they open more elevators, and Soarin’ can open up a 2nd theater, but they never start with it fully open).

  • Guardians (~15-20m wait if you’re ready to roll at rope drop, +5m to ride)
  • Webslingers (~20-30m wait +10m to ride)
  • Monsters (~30-40m wait + 5m to ride)
  • Soarin’ (~30-40m wait + 10m to ride)
  • Racers (if you get the Singlepass to skip line for just Racers, plan for that to be 10:30-11:30 ish range, aiming for ~11am to be in the center of that since so far you’re estimated to get through the above at 11am, if you’re getting the Multipass also and the above rides have shaved off some wait times by using Lighting Lanes, aim for a little earlier than that with maybe a 10-11am range, but you can also check on the single rider line here too and that will likely be a 5-10m wait, otherwise standby will be 50-60m +10m to ride)
  • TSMM (40-50m wait + 10m to ride)
  • Incredicoaster (25-35m wait +5m to ride)

If you make use of Lightning Lane (by purchasing Multipass for everything but Racers and/or Singlepass for Racers) then, you’ll get through the above even faster. If you do get Multipass and follow the above plan then I would book your LL’s for DCA as:
Guardians > Webslingers > Monsters > TSMM > then check on how far out Incredicoaster and Indy are.

  • If Incredicoaster is immediate get it as you tap into TSMM and then immediately tap in for TSMM and grab Indy (but if you want to leave the park by 3-4 at the latest I might be keeping an eye even earlier for it).

  • If Incredicoaster is out more than 10-15 min, I would grab Indy first to start your DL hop stack & wait in the standby for Incredicoaster (or make use of the single rider as it should be fairly speedy that early in the day still).

That leaves you waiting in standby lines for just: Guardians right at rope drop, Soarin (with the hope they add the theater capacity that bumps the ride wait time down by the time you make it to that step) & possibly Incredicoaster and/or Racers which you can make use of single rider to lessen the wait time.

Then when you hop to DL, you’ll likely be waiting for 2 hours to pass since you grabbed your Indy LL to grab your next LL. I would use the time to get lunch for sure. And then you can start looking any tolerable standy lines for what’s left on your list (Star Tours, Big Thunder, maybbeeee Jungle Cruise).

Alternatively, if you chose to use a Singlepass for Rise of the Resistance, schedule that for that 12:30-1:30 timeframe (you’ll have to this at least a couple of hours in advance so keep an eye on the times to advance to the timeframe you want). But if you would rather not pay the extra cost for Singlepass, you can do the 50-60m wait for it (once you’re in the caves it’s actually a really fun line with lots of places to briefly sit scattered around and is nice and cool but it will eat up an hour of time that will impact your plan of being done by 2-3 to be back at the hotel for a break & dinner). If you do wait in standby, be mindful of when your time to grab the next LL comes up while in line and grab it for Millenium Falcon while you’re already back there.

And then generally for DL follow the rest of LL’s that you’ll have left based on whatever is immediate or has an attraction near it that you’ll do standby (like if you need to wait for Big Thunder you could ride Pirates standby, or if waiting for Matterhorn Buzz or Star Tours standby would be doable) and Indy will likely be how you end your day if you’re aiming to be done by 3ish (which is definitely ambitious unless you are springing for all the Singlepasses & making the most of your Multipass- if you do, then it easily can be done).

And in case your head is spinning by now, don’t worry, it’s not just you, it really does take a huge effort to thoughtfully plan out and execute a strategic and time-saving plan, after of course throwing $$ at it to be able to have that opportunity. But DLR’s times do require a lot less effort vs. WDW’s to plan in advance and can be more go-with-the-flow, so as long as you know what priority you want to attack the rides in & how fast those run out, it’s very easy to zig & zag through it.

“And in case your head is spinning by now, …” YEP.

thank you for the thoughtful and helpful responses. i’m going to take some time to read, re-read, and re-read again. i’ll be back with more questions!

thanks!

Perfect! My only note is that the first LL you’ll book will be as soon as you’re scanned into the park at the entrance. If you’re at security by 7:15 am then you’ll be in the park before 8:00 am. So just as soon as you scan in, walk through and step the side (if you need to) book that first LL, then go right to the rope in Hollywood Land down Hollywood Blvd for Guardians rope drop.

awesome, @lolabear_la, thank you!

interestingly - i chatted with a CM yesterday through the app and they advised that the earliest i would be able to book a LL is 8 am … even if i’m in the park before 8 am.

also - i did find this confusing … per the website, haunted mansion is closed (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/en-ca/attractions/disneyland/haunted-mansion/). however, the CM (via chat) said it’s open. AND, if it is indeed open, is the VQ strategy to grab WOC first and then HM second?

Interesting that the chat CM said that, it’s possible it changed recently with the name changes to Multipass/Singlepass but I don’t think it is… and if it did, that would be surprising. Check both as you scan in and then once it hits 8:00am too if it doesn’t work before.

And then for Haunted Mansion, the page you linked will show as closed because that is the classic version of the ride. It’s right now the Nightmare Before Christmas Overlay called Haunted Manion Holiday, with the page at: https://disneyland.disney.go.com/en-ca/attractions/disneyland/haunted-mansion-holiday/

Because WOC is a show it should be separate from and not impact your ability to hold a VQ for the ride too. However, because you’re starting at DCA, you won’t be able to get first drop of the Virtual Queue (VQ) at 7am for Haunted Mansion Holiday, but you will be able to grab it at the later/2nd drop at 1pm so long as you have scanned into a park & have a park hopper.

I am 99.9% certain that we booked our first LL as soon as we entered the park. I know it was not 8:00 AM. But we were there for early entry so it’s possible it was 7:30 and maybe that counted as park opening.
