Disneyland Trip (and FOOD) Report

Day 1: Arrival, Disneyland, and Disney California Adventure

The stars aligned: I had a work conference taking place in Anaheim, Ca! Given that Disneyland is literally down the street from the Anaheim Convention Center and can even be seen from certain conference rooms, it was a no-brainer for my friend and I to attend. DF arrived a day earlier to hit the parks with her DH and DS22 while I joined her on Tuesday, 2 days before the conference officially started.

I arrived in Anaheim’s John Wayne Airport (SNA) at 8:59AM, more than half an hour earlier than scheduled. After a quick 16 minute Lyft ride, I was at the Tropicana Inn & Suites to drop off my luggage in our shared room. DisneyTouristBlog wasn’t kidding- the Tropicana is literally the second closest hotel/motel to the Disneyland entrance.

I was bouncing off the walls as I entered Disneyland for the first time. (Technically, it was my second time as I had gone with college friends for half a day during our senior year but since I barely remember it, it doesn’t count). So this was my true “first” time as a Disney fanatic. We were through the Disneyland gates by 10am and I didn’t know what to stare at first. It was dreamlike to finally be at THE original Disney park after watching countless YT videos about it.

After debating whether I should first get an iconic Disneyland churro or savory food item, I decided on the latter. I thus proceeded to excitedly lead my friend to Adventureland’s Bengal Barbecue. After I placed our mobile order, I giddily ran to the nearby Skipper lockers of the Jungle Cruise to obtain a 70th Disneyland Celebration ticket with my MagicBand+.

A nearby cast member heard my excited squeals and came over to investigate. Matthew was bemused by my enthusiasm and asked if we wanted some Disney Magic. Heck yeah! He then offered to get us on Pirates of the Caribbean with a lower wait. I was STOKED as PotC does not normally have LL access. As he was about to lead us to the ride, I apologized that we were waiting for a Mobile Order that I couldn’t cancel. He replied no problem and to just look for him after we were done eating.

Tropical slushy (POG juice & lychee syrup with a chili lime rim)

Pork Belly and Asparagus in Tamarind Sauce Skewer, Chicken Teriyaki Skewer, and Banyan Beef Skewer

Bengal Barbecue unfortunately no longer offers bacon wrapped asparagus skewers, which sucks because that was high on my list of Must Eats.

After we wolfed the above down as fast as possible, we went to look for Matthew. Turns out, he had been keeping a lookout for us. We quickly regrouped to then proceed to the nearby PotC. Due to this magical moment, we waited only about 10 minutes when the standby line was about 45 minutes long. Disney cast members are awesome!

I learned to my disappointment that PotC in DL did not take an attraction photo like in DW. In fact, several DW rides that have attraction photos did not have one at their DL counterpart. Add this much lower ride photo inventory to the dearth of PhotoPass photographers on our first day at Disneyland, the “free” perk of PhotoPass downloads that came with our LL Multi-Pass wasn’t very valuable.

When I first entered DL for the day, I had grabbed our first LL for BTMR since it had the earliest return time. After PotC, we slowly made our way to BTMR. I was super excited to see Dynamite Goat! After BTMR, we hunted for some beignets from the Mint Julep Bar as we waited for our next LL to activate.

At this time, I was having difficulty obtaining a LL for Indiana Jones Adventure with an early return time. I think I initially obtained a LL for Haunted Mansion (also for a little while later) just to have a LL to start the 2 hour countdown. I didn’t want to do a lot of back and forth walking in the park and was thus focused on LLs for this side of DL. I suggested that we ride the Railroad for a lap while we waited for the HM LL. However, it was taking us a while to get on said Railroad as few people were disembarking at the New Orleans stop. As we watched a train pass us by, I kept idly refreshing MDE. Eureka! I got an unexpected LL for Indiana Jones within the next few minutes! We quickly ducked out of the Railroad line and made a beeline back to Adventureland. As we waited for the LL to activate, we treated ourselves to Dole Whip from Tropical Hideaway.

I got the Pineapple and Peach Swirl while DF got just Pineapple. I still prefer my beloved Coconut Dole Whip. Preferably in a Tropical Serenade.

After the Dole Whip break, we got mightily jostled around on IJA. It’s the same ride system as Dinosaur (RIP) but my neck hurt a lot more after being whipped around on this ride. I still liked the ride though as I love the IJ movies. After IJA, we walked to the central hub to take some shots in front of the castle. Still no PhotoPass photographers in sight!

We then completed the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough. It was an enjoyable no-wait diversion. And a random door rattling/roaring at us after DF tried the door was a fun surprise. Following the walkthrough, I activated the 70th Celebration dioramas near Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique with my MB+. Again, it was a nice, low commitment diversion. Haha- I even made some “magic” for a little kid. He was excitedly smacking the MB+ touchpoints with his hands, not realizing that that wouldn’t do anything. So I would wait until he touched a pad and then quickly tap after him so that he could see the little scenes play out.

DF and I still had quite some time to kill before our LL so we walked over to Galaxy’s Edge for DF to purchase a Grogu sweatshirt she had been eying the day before. It took us several tries to find the “right” exit path that held that kiosk. We also ran across the Mandalorian, Grogu, and Ahsoka. DL really excels at having numerous characters just wandering about.

Batuu was surprisingly similar to the one in DW. Jarringly so in certain areas.

As we meandered back to Fantasyland, I tried the 70th Stuff (Shortbread cookie with a cookies and cream cake, fresh raspberry, and raspberry jam, surrounded by white chocolate mousse and topped with colored sprinkles) from Red Rose Taverne.

I wish they had had the original Grey Stuff instead. This version had barely any cookies and cream flavor. The Grey Stuff cupcake from DW’s Gaston’s Tavern is much better than the above. But to be fair, this was the seasonal/specialty version. Perhaps the original Grey Stuff is much better.

At this time, DF convinced me to stop staring at my phone (as I obsessively refreshed MDE to try modifying to a LL with a sooner return time). She even convinced me to wait on a standby line for Snow White’s Enchanted Wish as the projected wait wasn’t that bad (20-25 min). She was right, the wait wasn’t so bad because we got to gab and catch up while waiting in the queue.

After Snow White’s Enchanted Wish, we walked back to New Orleans Square for me to try yet another iconic DL treat: A Monte Cristo from Royal Street Veranda.

Myeh. Both of us didn’t see the hype. Maybe the Monte Cristos are better at the more iconic locations of Blue Bayou or Cafe Orleans but the pictures of it look the same. The outer shell wasn’t particularly crispy. Maybe that was the problem? Maybe the table service options served a better version than this quick service one.

We then went to redeem our LL at Haunted Mansion. After we tapped in and were waiting to get inside, I obtained a LL to use in DCA (initially a Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! LL for about 2.5 hours later). HM is one of my favorite rides at DW and it was also a highlight in DL. I wish I could visit during the times it has a Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. HM stopped multiple times while we were riding it but we didn’t mind as it gave us extra time to take in the details. Like this Mummy having tea time.

After HM, we walked over to DCA. I fiddled around with our LLs again while we were waiting in line for Daisy and got an earlier time for Monsters Inc. 10 minutes from that time in fact.

I’m super glad that we got to catch this Monsters Inc. dark ride before it’s demolished to make way for a new Avatar land. I love Disney dark rides and Monsters Inc. is one of my favorite Disney/Pixar movies.

After redeeming the LL for Monsters Inc., I obtained a LL for Soarin’ Over California. I still prefer Soarin’ Around the World but it was still a relaxing seated break. We then obtained a LL for WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure and thus made our way to Avengers Campus.

DF then told me how she was (unpleasantly) surprised the previous day when she got onto Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout with her family. She had incorrectly assumed it was the GotG coaster, like in Epcot. She found out it was a Tower of Terror-esque ride instead just before being loaded on. She was NOT happy as she hates ToT due to the multiple drops. I had been waffling back and forth between riding GotG:MB since I love the GotG but decided not to to avoid a potential headache/nausea that would ruin the rest of my day.

We passed DF’s nemesis and proceeded onto WEB SLINGERS. My arms felt like they were about to fall off after all the exertion. After WS, we walked over to Pym Test Kitchen for dinner/snack.

Experiment 7290: Cookies & Cream Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam. This was delicious.

Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese. This was also delicious but very filling. Unfortunately, it’s a limited time offering for the DCA Food & Wine Festival and is no longer available.

Choco Smash Candy Bar (dark chocolate, peanuts, nougat, caramel, brownie). OMG, this was good but sooo heavy. Both tastewise and literally in weight. There were several more items on the Pym Test Kitchen menu that I wanted to try but couldn’t due to limited stomach space. Digest faster, stomach!

After this delicious dinner/snack, we crossed the Esplanade back to DL. I switched our LL for MMRR to IaSW as the latter had an earlier return time. We wanted enough time to find a decent spot on Main Street for the night parade and castle projection show.

I really liked looking for Disney characters hidden throughout this IaSW. I already love the costumes on all the dolls. Looking for the characters added to the fun.

We then went back to Main Street to stake out a spot an hour before the highly lauded Paint the Night parade. While waiting for the parade, I placed a Jolly Holiday Cafe mobile order for treats to take back to the hotel to serve as breakfast/snacks for the conference. I initially wanted the snacks for while we were waiting for the parade but everybody else must’ve had the same idea because the arrival windows were pushed back more than an hour.

We had a decent spot on the curb just past the curve of the Central Hub and thought we could stand at the rope when it came up. Nope. The locals know what they’re doing. A solid line of strollers stopped dead in the middle of the street before said rope came up and just stayed. We could sort of peer between the people and had an okay view.

Sadly, it was a projections only night so no fireworks for the Wondrous Journeys show.

My haul from Jolly Holiday:

Coffee flan tart (with coffee chantilly, cocoa nibs, chocolate curls) a.k.a. My Breakfast

Celebration Matterhorn Macaroon

It was a jam-packed first day! I couldn’t wait to get to the second (and last full day).

This looks good and I’ve been curious to try it! But that much candy bar is just  … it is enough for like 12 people IMO.

DAY 2: Disneyland & Disney California Adventure

We left our motel a little after 6:30am to line up for rope drop at DL at 8am. There was already a line reaching almost to the street entrance because security didn’t open till closer to rope drop. We eventually joined the masses in the Central Hub and stood with the group headed to Fantasyland. Every Disney tip website pretty much advised this strategy as most of the Fantasyland rides did not have LL and would have some of their lowest waits of the day early. Plus their close proximity to each other would potentially allow us to bang them out one after another in quick succession. Ultimately, none of the Fantasyland rides were walk-ons for us despite our rope drop strategy but we usually waited only 10-20 minutes for each attraction.

First up was Peter Pan’s Flight, followed by Pinocchio’s Daring Adventure. I had been especially looking forward to Mr. Toad’s Wild Road a.k.a. Trip to Hell since it seems so crazy that Disney has such a ride. Sadly, they had turned down the heat effect. I had been looking forward to that hilarious attention to detail.

Next up was Alice in Wonderland but it was already posting a wait of 25 or 30 minutes. While DF joined its queue, I ran to the nearby Maurice’s Treats to get the hugely popular Cheesy Garlic Pretzel Bread as my breakfast before rejoining her.

This was sooo yummy and I wolfed it down as we waited in the AiW queue. I regretted not getting it with the bratwurst but had been afraid its addition would’ve made me too full to enjoy the DCA Food & Wine treats I had planned for later that day.

After AiW, we walked over to the Storybook Land Canal Boat. This was an adorable attraction and I planned to rewatch it again at night. After we successfully disembarked from the boat without capsizing it, we walked over to Toontown. On our way, we ran into Mary Poppins!

Even though MMRR was posting a 30 minute wait (which was longer than my LL addicted brain liked), we didn’t mind the wait as we gabbed and admired the fun props in the queue.

I vividly remember watching both of the above shorts as a child. Mainly Mickey’s confusion in the first and Pluto’s utter frustration in the second.

Funnily enough, I actually had the Mousercise record album on the left and DF had the Mickey Mouse Disco record album on the right when we were kids. So that was a really cool blast from the past.

We particularly loved how villainous Minnie and Daisy looked as they were downright cheating. We also laughed that Goofy was doing his own oblivious potato sack race in the middle of a 3-legged race.

MMRR is exactly the same in DL as compared to DW but the unique queue is a fun difference that makes it worth one’s time. After MMRR, we explored Toontown for a bit.

After Toontown, we made our way to Galaxy’s Edge for our first LL of the day. When I had first entered DL that morning, I obtained a LL for MFSR and kept pushing it back till ultimately the 10:20AM slot. 2 hours later, I was able to stack a second LL for a 11:25AM WS in DCA, which I later modified as we were still in DL by that time.

On our way to MFSR, we came across R2D2.

It was too bad that we were just a few days shy of the debut of classic SW characters like Han Solo and Princess Leia arriving in Batuu West.

DF was hungry by this time and open to suggestions of snacks. I dragged her away from the too mundane donut holes in Toontown to get her her first Ronto Wrap in Galaxy’s Edge. Even though she’s visited DW’s Galaxy’s Edge a few times, she hasn’t tried many iconic eats as her family is much more focused on rides. We needed to correct that. She LOVED the Ronto Wrap. Mission accomplished.

Meanwhile, I tried out the Black Caf Slushy (cold brew slushy, chocolate cookie sweet cream, and creme-filled chocolate cookie crumbles) from Kat Saka’s Kettle.

I actually made a “mistake” as I meant to buy the DL version of the Black Caf I knew and loved from DW. Disney bloggers are always saying that the DL version is much better so I was curious to compare it to the DW one. But I forgot that DL’s counterpart Black Caf is sold in their Docking Bay 7 instead of at Kat Saka’s Kettle. This Black Caf Slushy was “fine”. Nothing mind blowing. In fact, I think the slushy texture took away from it as it made it watery. By the time I realized my mistake, I didn’t want another cold brew.

After our snack break, we rode MFSR as engineers. DF kept yelling at me to man my station appropriately (press random buttons) as I tended to just sit back and enjoy the ride/view. Haha.

On our way out of DL, we made a pit stop in Tomorrowland to pick up another treat from my bucket list and a second 70th Celebration ticket near Autotopia.

Moonliner macaron (white macaron w colored choc, salted caramel buttercream, ganache, brownie pieces). This was tasty but very sweet. Another one and done.

After Tomorrowland, we window shopped a bit on Main Street before collecting one more 70th Celebration ticket from Tilly’s Booth at the Main St Cinema. On our way out of DL, we finally saw PhotoPass photographers! But definitely not as many as we usually see in DW.

We entered DCA around noon and I shopped for the extremely limited Food & Wine Festival merch. The inventory was limited as the festival was ending in just a few days. At this time, DF went outside the parks for a break while I started my DCA Food & Wine Festival food fest. Gotta use up all 8 selections on my Sip & Savor Pass on my last day in the parks!

Peppers Caliente’s Tajín Habanero Seasoned Wings with Tajín chile-lime sauce

&

Strawberry Guava Lemonade: Simply Lemonade, strawberry purée, and guava syrup topped with vanilla cream and freeze-dried strawberries

This was a very strong start to my food mecca. The wings had a nice kick and the strawberry guava lemonade was very tasty without being overly sweet.

Garlic Kissed’s Sirloin Gruyère Mac & Cheese with black garlic chimichurri, garlic butter crunch, and Fresno chile slices. The sirloin on this dish was flavorful and tender. I was super satisfied.

By this time, DF returned and we proceeded to line up for yet another PhotoPass photographer. Since we were right next to the Little Mermaid ride, I obtained a LL for it with an almost immediate return time. We also browsed the Festival kiosk next to it.

Perfect shirt for me!

I also ate a highly anticipated Mickey-shaped Macaron made with SNICKERS bar pieces from Uncork California. This was my favorite dessert from the whole trip.

We then proceeded to walk through Paradise Gardens and Pixar Pier. I had actually booked a LL for the Incredicoaster for DF to ride (she had enjoyed it immensely the previous day) but she said she didn’t feel like riding it herself (my head can’t take this ride) so I released it.

Even though I was super full by this point, I couldn’t pass up “It’s Snowcapped Lemon!” from the Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats as I wasn’t sure if we were going to pass through there again. I’m glad I got it as I loved how well the white chocolate coating went with the tart lemon soft serve but I was almost nauseous at this point from overeating.

I also had to buy an emergency hat as I belatedly realized my face and lips were getting sunburnt. One hat purchase later, we walked through the extremely crowded San Fransokyo. We tried to get in line to meet Baymax but the line was cut off for that time slot. The cast member advised us to return a few minutes early to the 3:15pm meet and greet. We thus proceeded to Cars Land to look for a Cars themed souvenir for DF’s son.

Throughout this day, I had been carefully checking for ILL return times for the highly lauded Radiator Springs Racers. I was waiting for the return times to advance till around sunset as I had heard that the view is especially nice then. However, around mid-afternoon, the ride went down. And it stayed down, filling me with dread over the prospect of missing this popular attraction. I had not bought the ILL for it the previous day as I had planned to ride it our second night. RSR being down was NOT part of my OCD plan.

After Cars Land, we walked over to Avengers Campus to redeem our modified LL for Web Slingers. Unfortunately, WS had several delays while we were on it so by the time we returned to Pixar Pier, the Baymax line was again cut before we could join it. AND it was the last meet and greet slot for Baymax for the day. So I just took a photo of Baymax and Hiro from afar.

We then walked to Hollywood Land to check out Off the Page. I could’ve gotten more LLs throughout the day but we eschewed them to have a leisurely day since we already experienced all the rides we wanted by then (except for RSR!).

After Off the Page, DF enjoyed a Make Mine Mocha (Cold Brew blended with Chocolate Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream) from Schmoozies! We rested a bit on a bench while she enjoyed her drink. We then explored the Sorcerer’s Workshop and relaxed in seated comfort during Turtle Talk with Crush. I haven’t seen this show since my kids were little. It was sweet to see it again.

By this time, DF needed a prolonged seated break as her knee was bothering her. So I left her resting on a bench in Hollywood Land while I ran around DCA to obtain my last few Sip and Savor Pass treats. Given that I was fairly full-ish, I had to modify my original plan of treats.

Terra Treats’ Pandan Latte Churro: Coffee sugar, pandan whipped cream, and toasted coconut shavings.

By this time, I had learned to my disappointment that DL was not serving any specialty churros aside from the above. Disney bloggers always gush over how good DL churros are and how awesome it is that they serve specialty flavor churros that are unique and tasty. Well, it turns out that specialty churros are a seasonal thing and I was unfortunately not visiting during the “right” season. Grrrr. But this one specialty churro I got was delicious.

Paradise Grill’s Pork Chile Verde Chalupa was delicious and one of my favorite DCA Food & Wine Festival selections.

I then made my way to San Fransokyo to attain some more bucket list treats to eat later. To my sadness, the Baymax sourdough was sold out for the day! Curses! I was counting on munching on it during my conference, never mind the weird looks I would get.

I was also sad to learn that the lauded Birria Ramen from Aunt Cass Cafe is also a seasonal item and was unavailable. I did however get the specialty Matcha-Raspberry Baymax Macaron filled with raspberry gelée and matcha buttercream. Good flavor combo.

By this time, DF called me on the phone because she was concerned that I had been gone so long. She didn’t realize that I was getting that many treats. Haw. I told her that I was obtaining my last 2 treats and then heading back to her.

California Craft Brews’ California Punch (Mango purée, guava nectar, cucumber syrup, and lemon juice garnished with a mango-chile lollipop)

and

Chicharrón Nachos with chorizo, cheese sauce, tomatoes, and salsa

The drink was refreshing and the Chicharrón were delicious. I intentionally waited to shake it up right before eating in order to retain the crunch. Both DF and I enjoyed the Chicharrón immensely.

We saw Minnie as we headed out of Hollywood Land and back to Cars Land.

It was almost 7pm and MDE still listed RSR as down without any available LLs to purchase. *dread*

We decided to sit on a bench on the main strip of Cars Land to await the land getting lit up at night. However, shortly after we sat down, we saw a mass of people start to line up for RSR even though MDE still listed it as down. I walked over to a Cast Member near its entrance to hear that RSR was hoping to reopen very soon. I thus grabbed DF and hustled us onto the standby line.

Throughout the next hour, it was a mix of highs (we can see cars racing on the track!) and lows (cast members announcing that the ride was still delayed and they didn’t know when it would load passengers). But after almost exactly an hour, we were on! And even though it’s the same ride system as Test Track in DW, RSR is way better. I wish I could’ve bought an ILL for another ride but the option didn’t come up while we waited in standby.

By the time we rode, it was nighttime and the scenery both on the ride and throughout Cars Land was very pretty. I’m not even a fan of the franchise but I could appreciate how immersive the land was. It looks just like the movie.

I was sadly too full to eat the popular Bacon Mac N Cheese Cone. So we headed over to the special viewing area for DCA’s nighttime show, World of Color Happiness. I had only recently learned about the free Virtual Queue for this viewing area and obtained a spot for us when it dropped at noon.

We arrived around 8:13pm for the show at 9pm.

The Muppets pre-show was cute.

After World of Color, DF was done for the day and headed back to the hotel. I decided to return to DL for their last hour (as DL closed an hour later than DCA) to get the most use out of my last park day. I arrived in the middle of Wondrous Journeys (still with only projections, *sigh*) and watched it from between the shops instead.

I had initially wanted to ride the Story Land Canal Boat at night to see it lit up. But even though I got in line before official park close (and would thus be allowed to ride no matter how long it took), I didn’t feel like waiting and it was a fairly long line. Plus, I hadn’t had the chance to ride the Casey Jr. Circus Train yet, which laps around Story Land and MDE listed it as having a lower posted wait time. Therefore, I hooved it to CJCT. I had a leisurely ride in the front train car before heading to Jolly Holiday for one last treat (which I had pre-ordered that morning).

The highly loved Beef Birria Toasted Cheese (Pepper Jack, onion, cilantro, and salsa verde on sourdough served with consommé). This was good and served as my breakfast on the first conference day and lunch on my second conference day.

I was sad that this was my last park day. DF and I had decided that even with the conference “discount”, we couldn’t really rationalize paying so much for a park ticket to use only in the evenings after our conference. But fear not, I found other ways to enjoy Disney treats the next 2 nights!

You’re completely right- it is SOOO much candy bar. I had to eat it over multiple periods. Good snack though! It hits the spot if you’re craving a really good chocolate bar.

This looks so yummy!

I have been wondering about this one, too.

Great report! Love all of the details and food! I also thought we would just race through Fantasy Land after rope drop. May need to adjust my expectations.

Can you let me know about your stay here? I’ve also got it selected, based off of the glowing DTB review.

Your trip is making me excited for my own “first” trip in a few months! I hadn’t even thought about spending time in cars land at night, but your photos sparked so many great memories of watching those movies with my kids.

Considering that all the families with young kids would be rope dropping Fantasy Land (instead of RotR, IJA, SM, or other intense rides), it made sense that FL weren’t going to be walk ons. It still went by pretty quickly though.

I can’t say enough good things about the Tropicana. The rooms were clean, the beds comfy, and the layout easy to navigate. The Front Desk was good about granting my request to have the linens changed for one bed in a timely manner. (Since I was swapping out with my friend’s family who only stayed the one night before my arrival).

The free shampoo, conditioner, and body wash pumps were fine. But the bar of hand soap for the sink was pretty slimy and made a goopy mess. Good thing there was a tray for it. Plenty of towels were provided but not enough hooks to hang them from.

The small in-room fridge was handy for storing treats. There was also a microwave but we didn’t use it. My friend tried to buy coffee from the on-site store but that section of the store never seemed to be manned. So she went to the very nearby McDonald’s instead for her morning coffee.

I noticed an on-site self serve laundromat as well as a small pool but we didn’t use either.

And the main reason to stay at the Tropicana- you are practically across the street from the Disneyland entrance. Here’s the view from right outside the Tropicana:

And yes, you definitely don’t need to be a huge fan of Cars to appreciate the land. It’s beautiful both in the daytime and night.

Day 3: Conference Day 1 and Downtown Disney

It was an easy 20 minute walk to the massive Anaheim Convention Center from the Tropicana. After conference ended for the first day, we dropped off our stuff in our motel before walking over to Downtown Disney for the evening.

Napolini Pizzeria’s Hawaiian Pizza with Parma Ham, Pineapples, fresh Mozzarella, and Tomato Sauce. This was delicious and the crust was nice and thin.

As we proceeded further into Downtown Disney, the menu displayed for Jazz Kitchen stopped us in our tracks. We were able to get in quickly as a walk in. We were seated in the same room as the live piano player so there was great ambiance as we noshed on good Cajun-Creole cuisine.

Spa Water-Melon Sour (Prairie Cucumber Vodka, Watermelon Puree, sweet & sour, fee foam, tajin rim)

Delicious and light!

Fried Shrimp Lettuce Wraps (buttermilk marinated Gulf shrimp, Gem butter lettuce, sweet chili-garlic sauce, pickled red onions, cilantro, and lime)

&

Crab Beignets on a bed of lemon aioli

Both of these appetizers were delicious!

To cap it all off, we had the Bananas Foster Glazed Beignets with Banana Rum icing, cinnamon-sugar dust, caramel drizzle, and vanilla bean creme anglaise. Everything was great at the Jazz Kitchen but these beignets were the ultimate. They were amazingly light and I could’ve eaten a bucket of these.

After Jazz Kitchen, we explored more of Downtown Disney and window-shopped some more.

One more treat though to end the night:

Salt & Straw’s Coffee and Love Nuts & Chocolate Malted Potato Chip Cupcake

Day 4: Conference Day 2 and Disneyland Resorts

On our second day of conference, we noticed something odd- there was a mass of humanity waiting to get into the convention center and many of them were decked out in full costumes! Turns out they were Final Fantasy Festival attendees. We had seen a few of them during our lunch break yesterday but I guess yesterday had just been a small preview event. The main event appeared to be this and the following day, based on the sheer mass of people that showed up. During our conference breaks, we had tons of fun admiring the costumes.

I munched on my leftover Beef Birria Toasted Cheese for lunch but got a Horchata Cold Brew with Cinnamon Toast Crunch from one of the food trucks.

After the conference ended for the day, DF headed back to the motel for a power nap. While DF got some shut-eye, I headed over to the Grand Californian (to hunt for an elusive DCA Food & Wine Festival pin) and then through Downtown Disney to pick up a few more edible souvenirs and a pair of Disney leggings that I had been eying the previous night.

I was in a time crunch so I didn’t get to explore the GC as much as I wanted to. And unfortunately, the shop didn’t have the pin I wanted either. So onward to Downtown Disney for some last minute treats to bring home.

The famous Churro Toffee. Damn it. I should’ve bought a half dozen of these to bring home. They were that good. They taste like Almond Roca but much easier to chew since they’re thin.

Peanut Butter Square. Very tasty also but not nearly as good as those addictive Churro Toffees.

After dropping off my souvenirs in our motel room, DF and I walked through Downtown Disney to head into the Disneyland Hotel to eat our way through both DH and Pixar Place Hotel.

Pu Pu Platter from Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar and Grill. It consisted of Pork Gyoza, Tempura-battered Green Beans, Shrimp Tempura, Chile-Orange Glazed Chicken Wings, and Togarashi Aïoli. All was tasty but the green beans were especially addictive.

We then explored a few of the towers at Disneyland Hotel.

We then headed over to Pixar Place Hotel.

After browsing the cool artwork and merchandise, we found our way to the pool deck to stake out a comfy seat from which to watch the nearby fireworks (hopefully). On this Friday evening, Wondrous Journeys was scheduled to show with fireworks but it was dependent on the winds. We got some delicious comfort food from Small Bytes while we waited.

Creamsicle Float. It was truly too cold that night for a float but I couldn’t resist. It was delicious and worth freezing myself.

Loaded Tots with Cheese Sauce, Sour Cream, Bacon Bits, Green Onions and Pickled Jalapeños

&

A really good Smash Burger on Hawaiian Rolls.

We then hunkered down for the next 1½ hours, hoping that we would not wait in vain.

We did not! Hurrah! They even piped in the accompanying music. It was a wonderful way to cap off our last evening.

Day 5: Final Day of Conference and Departure

On our last day of conference, we were treated to a few more fun FF costumes/characters.

For lunch, I grabbed an Asian Salad with Chicken from one of the food trucks nearby. Gotta love the wide variety of food trucks stationed at the Anaheim Convention Center!

And I had the last of the giant Choco Smash Bar during the last workshop.

Our last view of Disneyland before we Lyfted to the LAX airport for our redeye flight.

This was such a fun work/leisure trip and I hope to go again.

So if you could only do one beignet, would you choose the Mickey Beignets earlier in the post or the Jazz Kitchen ones?

Beautiful nighttime photos!

Jazz Kitchen’s Banana Foster beignets, hands down.

But if you’re talking about plain beignets with just the powdered sugar, the ones from the to-go portion of Jazz Kitchen (Beignets Expressed) seemed fresher/warmer than the ones from the Mint Julep Bar.
