Different son, do keep up.
My students will be without power, too. I teach online.
You of all people know how easily confused I am by you people and your private lives.
On “really, really cold” days, if you cut power, the buildings aren’t being warmed, temperatures fall inside, and once power is turned back on, the grid now has to use a lot MORE power to heat things back up.
I don’t know…I’m not sure this will actually save them much energy, if any. It would be far better if they pushed means for people to better insulate their buildings and windows. In my house, for example, I put plastic up in the windows for winter because the windows are too leaky…but it is FAR cheaper to put plastic up every year for 30 years than it is to replace the windows.
Are you under the misapprehension that Britain has a competent government? They cut the funding for that.
I know. It’s quite easy for politicians to just blame the other party for all these problems (some rightfully so) but when the world closed down the first thing I said to my family was that this was going to change the way the world works in the future. People seem so surprised now that it’s happening .
Let’s hope they don’t reduce gas imports then! That would be aweful. As crappy as it would be, could you switch to in person tutoring?
This was kind of a big deal, no? ![]()
I’m very good at blaming politicians - not here of course. But they kind of had a job to do…
While I do feel that politicians could have made choices to HELP the situation, I have to keep reminding myself that these failures are GLOBAL. Every country has politicians making varied decisions, and NONE of those decisions ended up being the “right” decisions for whatever reasons. And, even if ONE country had done everything right, they still would have been impacted because we have such a global economy.
So, rather than looking back at mistakes that may (or may not) have been made in this, we now have to consider what the right decisions are going forward from where we are now. As the old adage goes, no use crying over spilled milk. Time to just start cleaning it up!
In more ways than one!!
(And by “not here” I meant the forum. Not USA. I hope that was clear.)
Can’t see how I could without power.
It’s not just government. Look at most big corporations and decisions they’ve made that have led to us being where we are today. Outsource outsource outsource! Meanwhile profits are rising, some having record years during the pandemic. What about big banks and the stock market? Those guys are just making speculations that have real implications on us. It’s not just the government messing with us, but that’s all anyone focuses on. They are so ineffective in most things anyway.
We’re reaping the benefits (sarcasm alert) of decades of changes in how corporations do things. It’s more important to put more profits in CEOs’ and share holders’ pockets than into the companies and employees. Grab the bucks and go.
From a national security point of view we shouldn’t have lost all manufacturing of some key items to areas outside the country.
Because it’s not a hologram?
If I sit and think about this too much, it becomes very, very scary.
It gets complicated, though. My own retirement (401K) is dependent upon the success of the stock market going up over time. So, when those share holders benefit, I, as an employee benefit…although, it might not be tied directly (and unlikely, actually) to the specific company I work for, depending on where my investments reside.
And, while there are “bad CEOs” that pocket their money…a large percentage of CEOs are working hard to keep their companies running, and offering employment to hopefully increasing number of employees, etc. As such, I don’t mind if they are making uber bucks for doing that work…because I know I’m certainly not smart enough to do that kind of work, let alone have that kind of pressure on my shoulders.
But, your point is valid in many cases.
I’ve been expressing this sentiment for years and years. I just can’t figure out why no one was listening! ![]()
But, again, it gets complicated. Yes…there are “bad CEOs”…but a lot of those CEOs use that money not just to benefit themselves, but they re-invest into the workforce by creating new companies that employee more people, or are philanthropic orders of magnitude higher than what many are capable of.
We hear about the “disgusting” cases of CEOs taking advantage of things…but I honestly don’t believe that’s the norm…but the exception. So, in that, laws do exist to help…but more can probably be done. There will always be crooks, of course, at all levels.
It’s capitalism at work: the market and competition define the value of the position. Sucks that I don’t have the skills to run a Fortune 500 company but that’s the way it goes.
I’ve been talking to a British friend of mine who’s in Orlando right now. Her daughters are in the WDW parks, but she and her husband didn’t want to go. We discussed what else they could do.
I realised you could fill two days at WDW without ever setting foot in a park and have a really fun, but also relaxing, time. I’m going to start a separate thread about it later on today.
But it’s made me feel like I will take the June trip. I could really pare down the cost and still be busy and have fun.
