Destiny Unscripted - Trip Recap from DCL Destiny Maiden Voyage

This is high on my list to do. I really hope it’s not too long a wait :crossed_fingers:

Sorry about the play news for X.

He sings the song for HEA!

I love him!

So cool!

This is one of Athena’s favorite songs ever!

Oh good you got there  when HEA came back after the pandemic I got to be Athena’s guest for a special CM event of the first viewing. He was there in person and sang a few songs before the show. Core memory for us :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I was a bit sad to hear this recently but am coming around to it because we had so much fun at our trivia nights on the Fantasy.

OMG!! Jordan Fisher and James Monroe Iglehart!! I would be dying. Have seen James performing the Genie on various shows and he is fantastic. And I absolutely adore Jordan. He is my absolute favourite Dancing With the Stars winner of all time! He also hosted DWTS Jr. Plus, he sings You’re Welcome (with Lin Manuel Miranda) for the credits of Moana. And was in several Disney Channel shows and movies my kids watched growing up.

Hope X recovered from his bad news. DD19 never got left out of a show entirely, but I remember talking her through the disappointment when she didn’t get the lead parts she tried out for in her last two high school musicals. It’s tough.

Still drooling over this.

I hope so too! On the Maiden voyage I don’t think anyone waited less than 1.5-2 hrs but I’m sure that is extraordinary to what the norm will settle on being, and hopefully it’s already dying down.

Yes, I knew his name well and knew he’d done more for Disney but the best way I could remember to describe him for the kids was the Christmas specials. But I knew he sang a bunch more. And X only looked up his Broadway credits at first and I was like, well he’s done TV and specials for Disney too, so there’s something else you know him from, I’m sure.

:face_holding_back_tears: What a special memory! Especially in the wake of the weird times of not gathering during the pandemic.

We are Marvel and trivia fans both so to us it was a cool concept. I do see/hear that more people are disappointed by it not being more of a show. And I do worry about it becoming stale/repetitive after doing it more than a handful times.

But it does make the night a lot more chill, and you still get to see Rocket & Groot throughout in a little plot of their own which does have a nice wrap-up. And they play a lot of fun music you’ll recognize from Guardians movies and rides (and I think even EWTRTW was in the mix). So overall it was a win for us.

OMG I believe it (that he is fantastic as Genie). There will be more about him from the Q&A later in the trip, but he was truly a delight both on and off the stage!

See!?! I knew he was in more that I knew but wasn’t remembering! I do remember him singing with LMM in the Moana credits! And I knew he’d been around doing Disney things awhile.

Thanks! He is better now, but it is really tough to be out of the show completely which was a first for him. The production was just so small (only 18 in the full cast) and they called back 28 of at least 40 that tried out (and he was a part of the 28 so I think he got his hopes up there).

Also before our trip, DD12 had a rough moment in her latest audition, like your DD19, really wanted a specific lead that she didn’t get. She did get a featured ensemble role with a few lines but it wasn’t the one she went out for. And that was its own bag of feelings too. Especially watching people do the role now in rehearsals.

We’ve had a lot of fun and wins with them being theater kids since X started jr high, and this year was the first time they had any of that tougher side of performing. But I’m so glad they’re getting the mostly good of the experience too. And they are braver than I ever was! I never went for more than an ensemble role and only did a very few shows because I was terrified of being in the spotlight.

They are the best thing in the Marvel dining room! We look forward to them when it’s the main Marvel menu.

Good Morning, Castaway Cay

I woke up early before we had docked in Castaway Cay (around 7am) but decided to stay lounging in the quiet of a comfortable bed, keeping one ear listening for the room service order to come & favoriting activities on the Navigator for the day.

When room service arrived (around 8am), I woke everyone up to start getting up and moving.

By then we were fully docked.

L & I again did eat on the verandah, but it was much less dreamy. We were being hit by direct sun, and it was very warm, so we didn’t stay out too long.

Today’s plan was for a slower start with Royal Gathering as our first activity at 8:45am, followed by sit-down breakfast at 1923 and then get beach-ready to head off for a couple of hours at the beach.

Royal Gathering

We’re a fan of princesses, even the boys, so I still book us all for Royal Gathering (everyone is given a choice and so far, all but one cruise all of them have wanted to join me, I don’t think I’m sick of it yet).

We met…

Rapunzel

Tiana

Belle

and,

Moana

Now, there’s a story about these specific photos with S getting on the floor.

And I’d love to tell you.

But to this day, my kids just giggle and say we’re not exactly sure what happened.
I asked day of on the ship and just again last night at dinner when I had spent some time typing it up earlier in the afternoon, and several times between when I first found it in the photos and again when downloading the photos.

What I have been able to piece together between their giggles is that Moana said something shocking and S just went down to the floor & something about how exhausted he was??

I really don’t know. DH & I weren’t in earshot because by the time we set down the bags down, Moana was super engaged in talking to the kids and the photographer was already going and getting (these priceless memory) shots of them, so we didn’t cross in & join.

S did stand up & happily take these especially posed shots. So he may have been half playing (but really feeling the exhaustion).

1923 Breakfast

We like the buffet for the great selection and being able to fully enjoy as much food without feeling like we’re asking so much extra of a server to bring over plates & plates, but it is also so very enjoyable to sit down and have a meal served to us, so we try to it once a cruise.

DH, X & I really enjoy the eggs Benedict fresh at the sit-down meal instead of sitting under the heat lamp from the buffet.

S & E order the DCL breakfast that comes with a bit of everything and then donate their grilled tomatoes to me because I love them and they don’t. And it’s one less thing that I have to ask the server to bring me

L was completely happy with alllll the fruit that came in Jack’s melon boat.

I also usually get a berry muesli.
DH will sometimes get a plate of grapefruit and both him & X will get salmon.
And most all of us will get a side of hashbrowns (we love the triangle hashbrown on the ship).
They also tend to bring out a pastry plate to pick danishes or donuts or other carb-loaded treats.

Very easy to be a happy bunch with a delicious & more relaxed breakfast.

The Ease of Castaway Cay

Having Castaway Cay follow Lookout Cay is so nice because you really get to appreciate just how easy of a beach Castaway is for a family.

However, X was still not excited to go to any beach yet (his blisters were bothering him, plus he wanted to explore more ship things instead of sit on the beach).

I may have used the photo ops (especially of the ship aft & grand beach Christmas tree) to persuade him into coming, so I could have pictures of all of us at both of those. Plus DH promised him we would keep the beach time to an hour if he did come, for the photos and a bit of sunshine and ocean therapy. And he took us up on that offer! Huzzah!

Everyone was happy for photos on the way to the tram & on it.

And then here’s a little secret about S: he actually LOVES solo photos and takes every opportunity to take them with backdrops that are of interest to him. Like this one of him with his most favorite super-hero of all time, Spidey, on the back of the Disney Destiny.

After photos & one quick tram ride over, we got off at the first stop. Here I decided to get a photo of Mount Rustmore, which was first for us! (We tend to favor heading to the 2nd tram stop to be closer to the floats/snorkels & bikes but since we weren’t doing any of that today, we chose proximity).

Also, another first for our family, S really wanted to try out the kid’s club on the island, which was right there at the first stop, and he opted to go straight in without setting food on the beach first. It ended up being timed perfectly so he was able to do the Monstro whale dig they have in there (another first), and he was happy about that when we picked him up later on.

The rest of us meandered leisurely to find a spot on family beach. It was so chill. I’ve never seen the beach like that when the larger ships have docked at Castaway Cay, but it was like all the people were gone (I did see chatter from the cruise WhatsApp page that it had been very busy at the usually serene adult Serenity beach). At 11:40am, we found chairs right away in the first section with umbrellas and a tree overhead for shade. That’s all we can ever ask for.

And this view of the umbrellas. They always make me so happy, I don’t quite understand or can every fully explain why. They just do.

We kept our word to X and after just over an hour of beach time, I went to fetch S from the kids club to see if he wanted 10 minutes of beach time or wanted to stay in for 10 more minutes of kids club. They had just finished up the whale dig so he came out to join us for a minute at the beach.

DH & X decided that they would start heading back to get X back on the ship sooner, but they wanted some DIY ice cream sandwiches from Cookie’s first so they made a detour there.

It was nice to split up so that X could feel like he was actually getting back on the ship sooner while the other kids who did want a bit more time, got that time.

The kids with me did also want ice cream so once we rinsed off & packed up the beach toys, we also went for ice cream, which was banana flavor. I’ve heard so many people in vlogs say they don’t normally like banana flavoring but loved the banana soft serve so DCL. I hate banana flavoring but the number of testimonials I heard finally convinced me to give it a try. It was good and is now among my favorite flavors. It was the flavor on the ship too and we made sure to swing by later for more of it because I liked it that much.

L also noticed the full display of fresh fruit and loves all fruit, so she got a plate of it to go with her ice cream.

@Jeff_AZ the birds in the background of this photo reminded me of your story of the bird on Castaway going for the tray. I noticed them immediately and kept eyes on them & told the kids we needed to make sure we didn’t leave anything even looking like it was a hint of unattended.

And just as the kids started goofing off, not sitting right at their food…

A couple tables over, birds DID go after a tray that someone sitting down with (but they turned their back to it). So the kids listened better after that, paying more attention to where the birds all were.

And we left with no bird drama (this photo showing the closest a bird got to us).

Also, L took forever (and two bathroom breaks, yay for hydrating!) to eat her fruit & ice cream, so I even more glad that X & DH had gone ahead & not waited for everyone. And as a bonus they were able to get their showers done before we were even back on the ship. So it was efficient all over.

The kids & I eventually got ourselves back to the tram. With a couple more snaps at Mount Rustmore.

And then we arrive at point of the trip, where I take a million photos of the ship as we approach on the tram (but I’ll just give you the best one I got of the bunch since most of the rest have obstruction from something or another). The view in person just doesn’t compare to any photos I take. But I still take a million of them each time because I just want to try to bring some of that happy view home.

I also always take a bunch of the family walking up to the ship.

And finally another photo I’ve noticed I take most every time: a selfie of me just so happy and fulfilled that we’ve had the time at Castaway, with just a bit of it behind me as I say goodbye.

I really cannot explain why Castaway is so good, because objectively it’s not anything more than a good easy beach, but I also know I’ve never ever documented a beach selfie at the END of the beach time, on any other beach, much less with a contented smile. I’m actually usually quite a grump about the beach (because sand), and every other beach as I walk away I’m already thinking about how much of it is getting tracked home no matter what I do, but for some reason, the sand at Castaway is magic and even when it does follow me home, I don’t curse it. So yea, it’s my favorite, but I can’t just explain why other than to show you what I look like after even just two hours there.

I was on guard because of your encounter, so thank you for sharing!

The birds did seem to know they needed to be quick because they went in quickly, got out & stayed clear of the servers coming in to help clear.

Otherwise, I could see how easily it could have been us and our tray, especially with me being solo with the kids & having to run L to the bathroom a couple of times during it.

I was hoping you would finish this before I board but we will be on the ship in 9 days!! Do you have any Destiny specific tips to share? Maybe @tiggerpal could chime in too?

So soon!!! I was hoping to finish it by now too, and maybe on the weekend I can try to.

I would definitely make note of when all the character specific entertainment unique to the Destiny is scheduled the minute you have the app setup. And hopefully it doesn’t conflict with other things you want to do. The first one has been the Loki show and that has only been once shortly after sailaway. So definitely check as early as you can.

Then Maleficent and Princess Tiana/Dr. Faclier (with something about cooking in the name) experiences also only happen once each. So definitely find and heart them.

The Cruella show in Devil’s and Dr. Facilier’s parlor experience happen multiple times but are both very space limited so the lines could be long to see them. So I would know what your options are and try a couple of times.

Facilier and Maleficent (and maybe Loki too?) also do meets without doing their experiences/storytelling at set times, so if you see just the character name listed in the navigator it’s just the meet and not the show/story/experience as well. So watch out for that.

Also!! If you have a Magic Band+ there is a Haunted Mansion ghost scavenger hunt game unique to the Destiny so if that sounds appealing you should definitely take one to try it out! (I haven’t gotten to it in my report but we had some struggles getting this accomplished, but what we did and what we saw from other guests doing it was SO fun!!!) And that’s only on the Destiny - the Treasure & Wish don’t have an equivalent to it.

And then for pirate night, at some point in Cask & Cannon, Captain Jack Sparrow comes in and interacts. So definitely ask if there’s an (unpublished) time for that and possibly plan some time in pirate night for that. And also watch for the storytellers to be dressed up as pirates in the atrium and getting into full pirate fun. They were hilarious talking to a couple next to us while we were in line for meeting Captain Jack Sparrow.

Finally, the lighting show in the atrium is done at 7:30pm and 11:30pm. It’s worth seeing once! But the Wish’s was still by far my favorite. The Destiny’s though is fun because it’s Marvel music. And the lighting is SOOOO good.

Oh! And I totally forgot about the Daredevil show in Saga. That is another unique to the Destiny show and worth finding the time to see.

Ok, I think that’s all, but definitely don’t make any other plans for anything. No drinks classes/tastings, don’t plan for spa time, don’t plan for brunch, do not pass go & collect $200. That is, if you want to have time to see all the fun Destiny stuff.

Oh one more thing I thought of. Minnie in her Hero suit isn’t distinguished in the app from Minnie in her regular outfit or pirate outfit. But just know that she’s in the Hero outfit at very limited times. Most of them were on Sea day during the day (but not the last one at night as for the farewell show she was back in Captain Minnie attire). She’s also not in her Super Hero outfit Pirate night or during the afternoon of embarkation day. So if you only have 4 nights, it gets tricky to find the times that she does have it. And she was wildly popular on our sailing. So we missed out on seeing her too.

Sorry, I did think of one more thing!

There will be Marvel photos in Worlds of Marvel with PROPS.

On the Treasure the props were Thor’s Hammer and Captain America’s shield.

We didn’t do the photos on the Destiny again, but I have been noticing some Loki sceptre’s in the photos I have seen from that photo shoot (in addition to the hammer and shield).

You definitely need you with Thor’s Hammer at the World of Marvel entrance. It will be listed in the Navigator usually from 8:30-10:30am ISH a couple of the days.

I have my list in order of importance!

I don’t know if I know what this one is. I have tried to know what things happen but not watch the whole thing so it’s less spoiled!

I’m only bringing it for this purpose!

Thanks, I knew about this but forgot to put it on my short list!

Is this called “With Great Power”? It is the top of my list of want to do!!

 I already know I won’t get it all in so have lowered my expectations and have a list of the most important things to do. We are however fitting in Enchante and Palo

Can someone take a photo with my phone? We decided against the photo package this time!

Thank you for the tips! I am beyond excited to get on this ship!!!

If they won’t do a photo with your phone, you could just buy the one or two pics that you want. We did a ten picture purchase on our last cruise which cost way less than the photo package.

I haven’t watched this one either, but it had something about cooking in the title. My kids watched it and it was another of storyteller’s shows with them narrating about Tiana and Facilier and there was cooking involved. Their shows are really fun and so I was bummed I missed that this one was one of their shows. I think I read cooking in the title of it and thought it was more like the cooking demonstrations.

Yes! That’s the one! It was hilarious!! Hopefully you end up with a less packed sailing and seats are not has hard to come by, but we were packed in there and it was definitely hard to find a seat, but very worth it!

Oh good that you know to prioritize. I am seriously hoping we can get 7 days on the Destiny at some point because it has so much good stuff unique to it that I could easily fill 7 days with. And you’ll get to be the one to tell me how Palo is on the Destiny!!! Because we were so low down the totem pole to getting anything for the maiden voyage (and we wanted time back from it too), we skipped it.

Are you trying Palo brunch at all? Or will it be dinner maybe this time?

I think they can, but because it’s a third party company I don’t think that they are as accommodating as you would see from photopass at the parks. So if they really can’t, then @paulasc’s suggestion is a great one!

Dinner. I called to request 1923 on our last night so we don’t miss the 2 nights with shows

I just have someone I’m traveling with snap one for me

We didn’t miss out on a lot of things, but for out whole group I think only a couple people managed to get a character photo. Those lines were long!
