Destiny Unscripted - Trip Recap from DCL Destiny Maiden Voyage

We’re home! I have pictures gathered from DS14 and DH and myself in one common album that I can sort through to better memorialize, so I feel properly organized to begin a thread all about our experience on the Disney Destiny!

We were booked on the Maiden Voyage of the Destiny, a first for us to be on a maiden voyage. So we were excited to see what the hype of these sailings was all about. There was so much that was amazing but also it was definitely different, not always in amazing ways.

First of all the cons, the scheduling for activities always seemed to have so many conflicts and with only 4 days and 2 of them being port days on Disney’s private islands (that we definitely wanted at least some time at) it was very hard to accomplish even half of what the ship had to offer. Also, because so many highest level tiered status members booked rooms, it was very much a “Everyone’s special so no one’s special” for pretty much anyone who wasn’t a VIP or celebrity or family of them. (And unfortunately, enough of those highest status cruise members get their feathers ruffled about not being held to their usual special status that you hear more complaining and dissatisfaction, especially when things like #ChurroWaffleGate2025 goes down like it did on our last day & only sea day of the trip).

But there were 2 amazing events and one Disney star meet that we lucked into that made any of the downsides melt away to complete non-issues. Plus there were gifts every night in our stateroom. So much good & new to explore and the stateroom totally had a completely new ship smell to it!

So my short take is: The Destiny needs a 5-7 nights AT LEAST to experience the ship and all the characters, experiences and spaces it has to offer! And we are so happy we’ll be back on it with family (unfortunately it’s a shorter cruise again because the family only wanted max 4 nights).

And as for Maiden voyages specifically, we would do again for a ship we are equally as excited about as we were the Destiny, but also would hope for it to be at least 5 days (or skip one port day entirely for more time on the ship). And if you enjoy cruising and Broadway and would be thrilled with the possibility of some Disney stars being in your presence and putting on special shows and Q&A events for you, you too would love a Maiden Voyage!

So let’s dig in but first some photos for your patience…

What a tease! Can’t wait to find out more.

It’s like the old joke about job interviews.

“What is your biggest flaw?”

“I work too hard.”

This would turn me way off the experience. I hate being around entitled people.

 imagine how they would feel knowing I got 4 days of them on my cruise

:woman_raising_hand:

I have thoughts based on things I’ve heard and I can’t wait to hear about everything!! The good and the bad

4 days of churro waffles! That’s worth a TA cruise right there!

But also I can’t wait to hear all of your stories @lolabear_la !

It was so true! There was just so much for 4 nights and they just scheduled so many things on top of each other or there were long waits for things that we really wanted to do that took away from being able to do more.

In person they were actually fairly easy to avoid as long as you weren’t trying to be first in any lines or up front at shows. It was more the WhatsApp group (that I joined for Fish Extenders/gift exchange & any tips or info that I might have missed on my own) and after we were back I saw a bit happened in the FB groups too. So if you avoid stepping into the online spaces where they are more vocal you can probably avoid nearly all of it.

I think part of the problem was that so many cruisers knew what was possible and were used to having their 1 day of churro waffles minimum (and at least one person on the maiden voyage was had also done the TA and I’m sure there were more). And so there were a decent group who were big mad about how churro waffles played out on the Destiny and that the maiden voyage trip didn’t meet their expectations of churro cinnamon dust (or so many other things).

I want to have whatever kind of life these people have where the biggest conflict in my life is whether or not I get waffles.

IKR?!?! I do love me a churro waffle towards the end of my cruise (but really only just 1 because they are so heavy). And we’ve had cruises where we just couldn’t get them and it’s worked out all fine and been long forgotten which cruise had churro waffles and which didn’t.

Going to Meet our Destiny: SLC to MIA to Port Everglades

We flew a redeye direct from our home airport to MIA (we had hoped to fly into FLL but flight times were not in our favor, so we went a little further away to MIA).

Getting to the airport and on the plane was completely boring except to note that we found out X (DS14) is a budding Airport Dad, chiming in to help us herd everyone with time checks to keep us all On Time.

Flight was also boring as most of us slept most of the way. Which was perfect and needed for us all.

Airport Dad X also took these lovely shots leaving SLC and coming into MIA

In MIA I did take issue with their setup. You do baggage claim first & then their fake monorail (called the MIA Mover). But the issue was the giant long walk it was from baggage claim to the MIA Mover and still more of a walk to get to the rental counter. With our bags with us that whole entire trek. We were all missing MCO by the end of that.

Luckily we had a stroller for L (DD) and S (DS8) had slept enough to be moderately non-complainy for the majority of that walk, so we made it with little drama.

Also while on the MIA mover, we reminisced a minute about how on our first cruise (which was out of Port of Miami), then DD3 L, had insisted the whole time that Miami was “Mom’s Ami” (and Mom’s Ami only) and no one else was allowed to call it My-Ami since it was very clearly and absolutely only Mom’s Ami.

Once at the car we still had over 4 hours to our PAT and only a 40 min drive. I had scouted out a shopping complex close to port that included a Publix with a Starbucks inside and a few other quick service breakfast options nearby to chill at so we set the navigation to it and got right to it, surviving Miami drivers.

We killed time for at least 2 hours ordering food, eating, and me doing some shopping for the last 4-5 things we didn’t get purchased before leaving while the kids played their devices at the Starbucks & DH sorted out one last work issue on his laptop. We all made it through again without fuss or drama.

Then we started changing out of travel comfy outfits into our Nautical Best that I requested the family wear to board the ship, to have nice photos for embarkation for this most special Maiden Voyage.

Once changed, we re-parked the rental van to be at the edge of the parking lot so I could rearrange suitcases shifting any things around how I wanted for getting on the ship and adding the DCL luggage tags. It was here we first caught sight of The Destiny (and realized how really truly close we were to port).

By the time I got the tags on and bags rearranged we were within 45 minutes of our PAT and decided to just head to port and see if they would let us drop off bags and park.

Our 3 min drive turned into 13 when they put a bridge up, so we only arrived 30 min early. But we sailed right in once there, dropped off bags, parked, and got ourselves to the entry with still 15 min to go to our PAT. And actually right as we got to the area where groups were being held, ours was being let in. So perfect timing!

The port was busy and full but just as easy as Port Canaveral. First up was the long line for Castaway cay Club lines for check-in. They had a separate line for Pearl & Platinum and then one for Silver & Gold, which was long & what we were in. The signs overhead showed that boarding groups 1-12 were able to board. We were group 16 so weren’t in any hurry.

About a 1-2 minutes into being in line, our part of the line was diverted by terminal agents to go do security first and then use a bespoke check-in desk on the other side of security to keep the flow of guests moving. We were given a purple band per each of our 2 staterooms to signal that we needed to do our check-in on the other end of security.

Security was easy breezy & there was no line at this other desk so we were very quickly cleared to board but were still waiting for group 16 to be called (they had called group 13 while we were getting checked in so getting closer & closer!).

We used the time to take the little kids to one last bathroom break so there would be no emergencies waiting to get on and through the gangway and then we all made sure we had the DCL navigator app downloaded and up to date and started to get everyone setup on the ship wifi to start seeing the full Navigator.

This was where we encountered our first bit of maiden voyage magic: we got exactly the dining rotation we had hoped for!! Starting in 1923, two nights of Worlds of Marvel and ending with the new restaurant, Pridelands, as a finale. We were stoked and then just as we figured that out, they called group 16!

In Port Everglades they don’t let you enter the embarkation photo lines until your boarding group is called so we had one last line to get our embarkation shots that I had specifically wanted to be dressed up for.

And they turned out just as I hoped, with us dapper and nautical.

And then through the Mickey ears we went to board!!

Tell me you are getting a huge print of that to hang on a wall!!! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I need to! It will go on the list of canvas prints I need to get that starts with my youngest 2 kids’ baby photos. We are much better at going on vacation than we are at hanging anything on our walls.

Destiny First Looks

We always pick one thing we are most excited to see as we step on the ship that could happen on our way up to lunch or shortly after. For the Destiny that thing was sliding down the Oceaneer slide into the kids club open house.

I’ve never slid down any of the kids club slides but I’m so glad I saved this one for my first on our first Maiden Voyage because the slide & club entry area are themed to SUGAR RUSH with a candy-cane slide (double-stripe, doi!!) with WRECK-IT-RALPH and VANELLOPE!!!

I’m excited because that’s our favorite family movie of all time. I highly recommend doing the kids club slide on open house days and I will from now on endeavor to take every chance to do them.

This whole area had my heart! :sparkling_heart:

The rest of the ship was pretty cool too. The aft elevators and carpets were themed to Heroes and we saw some of these great images on the carpet & elevator walls, on our way to heading up to lunch at the Marceline Market buffet.

Lunch was busy but surprisingly less chaotic than the usual embarkation day buffet. There was plenty of great selection, and we did have plenty of shrimp and crab and other yummy entrees. Unfortunately the crab wasn’t the snow crab legs but stone crab/Jonah crab claws instead (which was honestly to us more of a disappointment than the churro waffle situation, but we moved on really quickly). And I have no photos of any of the savory food, but do have the ever important dessert: my favorite, the chocolate mousse marquise and an oreo cheesecake bite.

Lunch done, our next stop was the stateroom to situate and bask in new stateroom smell.

The room murals and art were gorgeous!

And all our swag was really fun too!

The lanyards and bags above were all Castaway Club gifts and had Maiden Voyage specifically inscribed on them. There was a canvas tote with zipper top and also a wet-dry bag that you could fold down and buckle to be the size of a fanny pack, which I loved and used for both beach days.

ETA: Also pictured behind the swag on the desk (in the white boxes) are a souvenir champagne flute that was super pretty with a Disney Destiny design and beautiful colors. We got one per person and I still haven’t opened them up at home because I need to re-arrange our shevles to do a full Destiny themed shelf for all the wonderful swag we got, and these will definitely have 1-2 of them on it!

Then we also got gifts just for it being the Maiden Voyage. The white gloved hands on a stick to wave for the sail away. And a very fun magnet set (one per stateroom that you can see X opening up in the middle photo) of the Mickey & Friends Heroes suits designed for the Destiny Heroes theme, with markers for the kids to color them.

And here we started to get a few bags being dropped off so I unpacked what I could, got our door setup and then I LAYED DOWN FOR 20 MINUTES for a power nap before the Muster Drill. That was a Maiden Voyage miracle! I also got the kids all to at least have some quiet time, if not a full nap at this point too.

So getting on & situated was a huge success!

Setting Sail to the Open Sea

After our quick quiet time/power nap it was time for the muster drill. Again, it was easy & over with quickly, and afterwards, we opted to take the stairs up the 7 decks to the next part: the Sail Away!

I had heard that a maiden voyage sail-away was not-to-be-missed. There would be free fizzy drinks for toasting and possibly a special guest. We also knew that the newly-revealed godmother of the Disney Destiny, Susan Egan (voice of Megara in Hercules and the original Belle on Broadway), was set to be on the ship and per her website would be doing a performance with a group of Broadway stars with Disney credits. So none of us wanted to miss any of them if they were going to be a part of Sail-Away.

When we made it up, they weren’t quite passing around drinks, so we got our first soft-serve ice cream of the trip, and some of us made ice cream floats out of them. We also all had our hands on a stick to wave around. And all of us were still dressed up.

We found our spot as close to the stage as we could get, and just as we were started to get walled in, that’s when we spotted drinks started coming out, on the other side of the forming wall of people. We sent the older 2 kids to go grab 4 non-alcoholic ones (designated by maraschino cherries in the glass) for them and their siblings. Then DH & I would go grab our alcoholic ones after they had their drinks secured, hopefully getting us all a drink in hand for the show.

That went sideways when the older kids were gone for an eon and showed up with glasses without any cherries and said “It tastes weird.” The server had told them that the ones they were given were non-alcoholic, and said they were out of cherries (and they had watched her pour the glasses but they couldn’t describe the label so we couldn’t be sure). DH & I could not conclude if they were or were not alcoholic even after tasting sips (it was SO bitter though so my kids wouldn’t have even liked it).

By then it was too late and too crowded to try & go back out of the crowd for another attempt to get drinks. So, we stayed put with maybe/maybe not alcohol hoping this show would be worth it!

Susan Egan did come out to kick-off the Sail-Away party but did not perform (nor did anyone else from her crew). And the rest of the party carried on as usual. Which was fine. We did though suffer a few spills (both me and X on our white tops!) while waving our stick hands around trying to juggle the 4 maybe/maybe not drinks and the remnants of ice cream floats. Luckily I had some Tide Laundry wipes with us and we got them cleaned up as best we could.

But that didn’t damper us much as the Let’s Set Sail song they do on the newer ships is my favorite of the sail away songs and every chance to hear the horn, especially at this moment, is emotional. Also, the Destiny has a little beginning part that is unique the ship and sets the tone of heroes vs. villains with a Marvel villain showing up on screen the in-person hero swinging in to get the sailing started right, so it was still a magical sending off to sea.

Speaking of the sea, somewhere in the evening, we did make it down to our room and got some photos of the kids on the verandah and X using his camera (on the newest and fanciest of all our phones) got some great sunset at sea photos with clouds that looked just like Hercules clouds, so we felt it was a great omen for the start!

This is hilarious! I might have done the same once while getting breakfast at Kusafiri in AK and ordering a very fancy-sounding cold brew drink. My kids like coffee drinks, but my 8-old told took a couple of sips and pronounced it undrinkable (and there was also something unexpected about the taste to me - but I needed caffeine so I ended up drinking most of it by myself at 9am while riding KS). When I looked at the Kusafiri menu a week later to write up my trip report, I discovered that the unexpected taste was most likely an Amarula shot

All of you look amazing - such great outfits!

And those veranda photos are beautiful.

Glad you had a fun Sail Away party on this special sailing.

Thank you!

 I am glad I am not alone in this! We did so look for a tray of drinks afterwards and watched them pour from the non-alcoholic bottle and took a glass and it tasted the same as the drinks our kids had brought back so we (think) we determined it was non-alcoholic. And regardless, the kids still didn’t like the taste at all so, so it wasn’t a huge loss. It was more the fact that we had hoped for everyone to have a glass to toast and we instead were toasting with paper cups/ice cream cones with remnants of ice cream floats/soft serve cones, which felt a lot less formal. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’m chuckling too!

Our kids were not (amused or chuckling) when they realized it could be alcohol and DH & I had to convince them even if they did sip one sip they were going to be fine.

Loki Takes over the Destiny

Sometime before the evening show & Disney we came back to the atrium to watch the first of the storyteller shows.

On the Destiny, storytellers Zayah & Gamble were two characters who showed up all throughout the sailing to regale us with stories of villains, heroes and those unclear ones in between. The first show featured Loki, which we went to this first night. And even though we had full intentions to see all their shows, we never made it back to any of their other atrium shows (there was a Tiana one, that my kids did attend but didn’t photograph, and a Maleficent one that I was so sad to miss but it was such a busy sailing).

This (and I’m guessing the Maleficent one as well) show really showcased the power of the lighting throughout the atrium and we enjoyed being immersed and Loki’s appearance, claiming himself our King, was very fun.

Mom’s only other Request for a Nice Photo

When discussing what to wear and pack for this sailing, as mentioned before, I wanted the one embarkation photo, and also one nice shot in the atrium, either a backdrop or staircase. I promised the family that if they did this one set of photos that they could change into whatever cruise casual they wanted for the rest of the sailing. And I promised them that they could change out of their nice attire the second this photo was snapped. And that no one else had to be in any other photos after this. DH was onboard (pun intended) and got the lingering kids who weren’t initially onboard by saying, do what your mother says because we like her ideas and planning and want her to want to keep planning for us.

This was the backdrop I chose. Everyone stayed in their outfits for dinner, which was nice since it was the nicest of the 3 restaurants at 1923 (one of the reasons we were hoping for this rotation since we’d already be in nice digs and those that wanted to be nice for dinner, could just stay in them).

Walt Disney Theater: Disney Seas The Adventure

A bit after 6:00 pm we headed to the theater to get seats for the 6:30pm showing of the short compilation show that would be put on that night. It’s very easy to see, has some great Disney songs in it and is worth seeing to kick-off your cruise. No photos or video are allowed once the show starts, so just the pretty stage ready for the show to share here.

Wandering the Ship before the Dinner

The next bit is more of a photo dump from all my family’s camera as we wandered around the ship, after the show & before dinner. I believe DH attempted to check the shop for a bit, but the line was CRAZY long. We had been given (and taken) the chance to pre-order a bunch of the merch online beforehand so we were happy to stay out of the madhouse of the first night of the shop.

Up first, The Sanctrum

Moving on to some artwork. We love exploring all the art on this newer class of ships (the Wish, Treasure & Destiny) and here’s some of wht stood out to us the first night.

A moving art piece as you move aft from the atrium.

A gallery of villains & heroes along a hallway towards the theater & across from some shops.

A snippet of Cafe Megara, one of the specialty coffee lounges off of the atrium

And ending with some more Hercules clouds
