Coronavirus Outbreak: Part 2

Interesting article.

We usually turn into big Olympics junkies. I’m hoping the games take place but it seems pretty precarious still.

Currently only 6% of Japan’s population is fully vaccinated. I found an older article that discusses why that number is so low.

I love the Olympics! Spectators or no, I hope they go forward. The athletes and the world needs it. Spectators help with the emotion in the arena, but better without than to cancel it entirely.

We are having similar discussions here in Canada. Some experts are now saying we should hold off on vaccinating young children until more testing is done.

I saw something on Twitter tonight about Arizona’s cases doubling since a few days ago… @Jeff_AZ, any word there?

I’ll have to look it up, but doubling sounds sensationalized. Arizona led the way with the summer surge last year, which epidemiologists attribute to seasonal patterns that we could see again this year, although much more muted. So a small uptick in cases wouldn’t be unexpected.

Texas was also knocked as ā€œa state with rising casesā€ last week following a daily report of 6k cases. Not sure where they came from (old cases? I dislike the clarity when that happens) but 7day rolling average is again lower than it was before that outlier. Still on a slow roll downhill.

Just returned from the hill country where apparently the pandemic is over. :woman_shrugging: We were camping, so no concerns being indoors for any extended time.

This is interesting. My oldest eagerly wanted to be vaccinated and she’s nearly 2 weeks out from her second dose. None of my other kids qualify yet - tho DS 11 will in another 6 months.

That said, I’m in no rush to vaccinate the 8 year olds. I am hopeful that we’ve bought a little time as a population to make urgency there unnecessary.

My 12 year olds are fully vaccinated as of Saturday. They had no issues with the vaccine. But I can understand them possibly wanting to do a longer study on children under 12. We will see what happens.

Ok @janamelia, I looked it up. The downward trend has leveled off a bit, and due to the lumpiness of reported data, you could probably pick two days where one was about double another. But the 7-day-average is roughly flat in the last two weeks. This chart is the last 60 days:

And over the longer term, that looks even better considering how low cases are - here is all-time:

Percent positive is 4.1%, one of the lowest rates in our state ever. Hospitalizations are still declining, though less precipitously:

Same story with deaths (reporting is very haphazard and has a sometimes lengthy lag):

Vaccinations are still rising, albeit much slower than I’d like, but we’re almost to 50% with at least 1 dose now:

Oh, sorry - I tagged the wrong person. But you figured it out anyway.

For those doubting vaccines… Six infected, 2 dead - but the vaccinated employee was NOT infected at all.

Santa Clara County issued a Public Health Order legally requiring that employers request the COVID-19 vaccination status of their employees. According to this Order, the employer is required to ask its employees for this information. If anyone indicates they are unvaccinated or decline to state vaccination status, the company is required to follow up with the employee every two weeks.

This reminds me of the @amyvanhoose post from couple weeks ago about being concerned that there will be many regrets in the next couple months. Very sad to think about the lives that could have been saved and the loss those families are now dealing with.

I listened to an interview w/ Dr. Kavita Patel about the new Delta variant and poor vaccine rates… I’m paraphrasing but she said that ā€˜the virus has to go somewhere to survive and mutate and those that are unvaccinated will be the prime target’. I’m thinking of states like Mississippi and Alabama w/ 30% vaccination rates as prime targets. But what do I know :woman_shrugging:

Is this a change to the WHO guidelines or has it always been this?

The latest reporting from the WHO was about this. Some experts want a longer trial period w/ children before recommending vaccination.

I scanned my Apple news and saw zero about it. A first google search gave me no articles but took me to this page. I was (blissfully) out of cell range for a while so I could have missed it.

Interesting that the recommendation doesn’t mention myocarditis anywhere.

It doesn’t look like it is addressing any rare side effects, as it doesn’t mention the blood clot issues for women for certain vaccines either. It’s seems to be just giving recommendations for who should get the vaccine and what vaccines are approved.
