I have a hard case that totals 62 inches in dimensions, which is the limit for checked bags without extra fees. DW is worried they will measure it a hair bigger and charge us. Anyone have experience with this situation? Flying Southwest
Never flown SW. I did have a suitcase that was 51 pounds with Jet Blue. max was 50. They let us slide
You should be fine as long as the 3 dimensions (vs. the overall 62 inches) are OK. The overhead space is more about the 3 dimensions than the total combined, so check that.
Also, the earlier you board the more you can get away with.
This was for a checked bag. Thanks for the help, but DW went and exchanged the bag for a smaller one. Not worth the anxiety on a trip full of it already.
We fly Delta and have never had a suitcase or bag checked for size yet. It is so rare if ever that is the problem. Many try to take almost full size luggage as carry-ons which you can imagine slows down boarding as they try to stuff them in the overheads. The flights we have been on with Delta they always end up asking for volunteers to check their travel ons for free by tagging them and placing them in the skyway until shortly before departure. You than pick them up same place on Arrival.
They don’t have time to get out a tape measure, but better safe than sorry. Your wife did the right thing.
Also, for weight, if you think you’ll be going over, have an item or two near the top that you can just pull out, if need be, that will be acceptable in your carry-on luggage, like a blazer or jacket or curling iron or extra shoes.
I’ve had to rearrange things at the airport to avoid fees. It does happen.
We have one of those “62 inch” bags and have flown with it many times without a problem - luggage manufacturers make their bags with the various size guides in mind so the airline staff don’t have to be continually checking them.
Weight, however, is a different thing - always be sure to be well under the restriction to avoid having to shuffle stuff around in bags at the check-in counter. Been there, done that, not fun…
I’ve never had them measure the size, only the weight.
I did the same thing last year. Chances are no one would have ve measured or cared, but it wasn’t worth the risk.
May I respectfully advise that you purchase a luggage scale. They are very cheap and easy to carry.
