Best Deck on the Wish?

Do you have any issue standing on the edge of the main deck? (Deck 4 on the Magic) If we were at sea I was pretty anxious, especially at night. During the day was better and at or near port was fine.

We were toying with a Grand Canyon trip next year with DS6 and DS10 but just thinking about them being too close to the edge (along with a few other factors) made us decide to postpone it.

My kids were fine at GC but I was very clear about what they could and couldn’t do. And they mostly behaved and stayed away from the edge. There are some areas and trails that are extremely safe and others that are more dangerous.

But every kid is different and you know yours best. Better safe than sorry.

I think my kids would be fine but I’m not sure I’d actually be able to enjoy it

Edit - but it’s not the main reason we decided not to go. There were a lot of other factors that played into it. I’ll get there someday!

I want to go back. With my less risky taking kids.

Not really on the lower decks. A bit worse at night. The upper decks I prefer to stay a bit further from the railing. I think for me it was more because it was open above me that the height made me nervous. When I had a deck over my head I felt more comfortable near the railing. And the railings are pretty high.

I’m a total chicken about heights in most circumstances. And watching other people near open ledges is nerve wracking. I like to stay well back from cliffs. Stairs and ladders tend to be the worst for me.

When I was a kid I had a recurring nightmare where the details were different but the theme was steep roads/staircases/etc. Everyone else in the dream would be fine and I would be crawling because I was so afraid of falling. Freud would have a field day with that one probably. The only other recurring dream I had as a child was that my mom was dead. I think I was a neurotic little mess!

For me it’s a combination of the heights and the open sea, especially when the boat is moving. Just imagining how quickly I could be left behind and unseen. Gives me nightmares. :flushed:

I didn’t like standing next to the railing. But I could sit on a deck chair a little further back.

This is what I did while DW looked over the railing. I felt like I was in time out.:rofl::rofl:

(When she wasn’t there I was ok going up to the railing. But if she or anyone else was nearby I got anxious. It’s weird how that works.)

I’m trying to book some extras for our September cruise in 10 minutes! Why am I so nervous?

Well, the biggie I wanted was brunch at Palo and I got it! Yay! I also booked us for a martini tasting and the Castaway Cay adventure that includes snorkeling equipment, float or inner tube, one hour of bike rental, and the stingray experience. Now to see if Karen and Melissa want to do those things. :joy: We can always cancel or modify - right?

I also really want to get the rainforest room pass this time. You did that on your cruise, Jeff?

Yes I did! I got it the first day easily. It never seemed too crowded there. Not sure if that is typical.

Yay!

For the Castaway Cay stuff, we LOVE the bikes and floats! Some of us love the snorkeling but not if there’s waves or choppy seas, so now we’ve decided to check the weather and cancel it if there’s wind. You can always add on the rental for snorkel gear at the beach (they never run out). And the package is only worth it if you do all the things in it. So we were throwing away money if we decided day of not to snorkel but it wasn’t always a fun thing for all of us.

Yes, for Castaway Cay stuff you have to do it 24 hours before, but once you hit 3 days before the sailing you need to call DCL to cancel (or once onboard visit Guest Services) since the app will lock just before the sailing so you can’t change anything.

Good to know! Thank you! I was feeling the pressure booking for all three of us!

I figured we could always rent the floats - right? Do those ever sell out?

Not even remotely, at least not that I’ve ever seen. The last time we did a full day at Castaway Cay we got the package (bikes, floats & snorkels) just for my 2 older kids that would do all 3. Then we added on 2 extra floats when we went to pick them up and then 2 extra bikes when we went to do the bikes. DD4 is too small yet to do be able to do the bikes or snorkel (the minimum age is 5) so DH usually hangs out with her on the beach pulling her around on a float while I take the other kids snorkeling. And even when all 6 of us were on the beach, 4 floats was perfectly sufficient.

For prospective @Jeff_AZ I’m 5 ft 7 in and you can see where the railing hits me on the verandah

Our TA has always booked extended verandahs for us which gave us much more room. This was our verandah on Deck 5 of the Fantasy.
