This is what I mean.
I’ve never been barged in upon.
I appreciate the trash and towels being removed and changed.
Do you not put your DND sign out?

Yes. But they don’t care. If the DND sign is on most of the day, there is a point where they start calling and will, in fact, just open the door even if you have it double-locked. (That’s a rare scenario, but point is, if you are showering or napping, and they knock and you don’t hear it, they WILL come in, regardless of the DND sign and how locked it is.)
Whereas I’ve been in my room and had that out and have been not disturbed, then leave and return to my room having been serviced.
Look I’m not saying these things never happen
I’m just saying that for whatever number of reports you all are seeing, it cannot possibly amount to very many incidents percentage-wise across rooms sold. And I’m saying that instead of assuming the worst - which is what it feels like is happening here and why I am speaking up – maybe consider human or technological error as accounting for that 1%
I think most of the time they can find a time when guests are in the room.
This past trip, as I mentioned, my wife was sick with a fever and spent ALL day on Friday in the room and much of that time in bed/sleeping with the DND sign up. They knocked, called her phone, my phone, room phone (but our phones are set to not ring if they number isn’t from someone we recognize), and then came again and knocked. My wife finally could manage to get to the door.
I’m still not hearing that this is what happened to you though?
The barging in has been reported by others in many circumstances. MY POINT is that they are relentless and won’t let it drop, to the point that you can’t just relax in your room, take a nap, or whatever, without fear of being bothered. If you have young kids taking naps, they will still knock, and potentially wake them up. The policy is downright intrusive, EVEN in the cases where they don’t actually barge in. My wife shouldn’t have had to go to the door. She was sick, trying to sleep.
Disney can use other means to avoid this. They should. But they don’t.
But I literally have done all of those things and have never been afraid of being bothered. That’s what I’m trying to say. It isn’t and hasn’t been intrusive for me. And again I’m not saying it’s not happening I just don’t think it’s the problem that this thread is making it out to be.
What would be your recommendation?
It sounds like the called you literally 3 times before knocking again? And NOT actually barging in?
I have young kids and have napped without being disturbed. But also my kids sleep like the dead and if housekeeping had knocked or called I could have answered and it would not have woken up my kids.
There are a variety of ways. One that immediately came to mind was a way to voluntarily provide some kind of proof of identity, be it a passport photo or driver’s license. If you provide it, and it is “clear”, they don’t need to do checks.
They also can do something about checking name of primary guest to the list of DVC owners. If they match, again…no safety check needed.
They can provide a means to indicate in the app when you do not (for REAL) not want to be disturbed. They could provide time windows that allows you to indicate when you might be napping, or whatever.
You seem to be under the impression that because it doesn’t bother you, it shouldn’t bother others. It bothers us greatly almost every trip at some point, because there are times we legit just want to be left alone and not have to answer knocking on the door, etc.
The calling is just as intrusive. (We have been known to just unplug the room phone from the wall to avoid being called.) If I am taking a nap, I do NOT want to have to wake up to answer your call!!!
No, I specifically said I believe it happens (and it’s probably annoying)
I don’t believe it happens to the scale being suggested.
I don’t think anyone was suggesting a “scale”. (Although, even ONE TIME having a CM walk in on someone without just cause is one time too many, in my mind.)
When I worked in housekeeping, yes. A room wasn’t ready until the head housekeeper checked it and released it. Those persons cleaning the rooms also knew exactly who was still in their rooms and who had packed up and left. My sister and I have this discussion nearly every time we leave a lodging. She worked fast food exclusively -while I seemed to clean.
How it’s done now in the digital age, is maybe anyone’s guess.
I don’t know what the scale being suggested is but we’ve had too many security checks - the first being with a 9 yo and two 13 yos in the room, who were gobsmacked at someone just coming in and declining to respond to questions from anyone in the room - probably the worst part. Since then we know what the deal is but we’ve not had kids with us either.
I don’t for a minute believe the practice was for anything other that cya in case something horrific did happen. Some litigation protection group probably recommended it.
Since you and I have had multiple checks on several visits while others apparently have had none, is Disney engaging in some kind of weird profiling?
Or should we never buy lottery tickets and stay away from gaming tables?
I think the incident from the reddit thread was just a bad mistake and doubt they’re automatically checking people out of their rooms based on your MDE-reported location.
However, we have had the good fortune of being disturbed by “security” checks on at least half of our trips since Disney’s started doing them. Easily my least favorite thing about staying on property. They’ve never “barged in” on us because I always let them in (except for the one time we were getting ready to leave and I told them to come back in 10 minutes), but it doesn’t surprise me that it happens with how insistent they are.
This january was the first time ever we’ve witnessed one of these. There was a knock on the door, and when my wife opened, the CM apologized and told her they are required to do safety checks. He only stepped into the foyer, glanced over the room, thanked and left. (standard room at Poly)
It’s of course possible they’ve gone to the room when we’re out, but we haven’t seen any signs of this over the years, not even trash touched, ever. We’ve had connecting rooms where the other door is deadbolted and the connecting door left a certain way (pushed closed but not locked, for example), and it hasn’t looked like anyone touched them. No lights left on, stuff moved, doors opened etc. So either they are very stealthy, or they are skipping some days and/or rooms for whatever reason ![]()
We keep DND on the door 24/7 for the entire duration of our stay because they are usually shorter stays and we just don’t need any houskeeping. A couple of times I’ve gotten calls asking if we need anything, but that’s it.
Not trying to downplay any of the horror stories or anyone else’s experiences, I just find it bizarre how different our experience has been and how we’ve managed to avoid these completely
edited for clarity, my tired brain can’t seem to form sentences…
I used to keep the DND (which actually isn’t a DND sign, it’s a ‘Room Occupied’ sign) on the door, but after several calls while trying to rest so they can do the room check, I now remove it once we leave for the day. My favorite is when they ask ‘when is a good time to come by’ and I say ‘Now, so we can go back to sleep’ and they show up over an hour later.
They usually stop by when we are out, now once we take the sign off, but if not, they have no issue knocking and calling when we are in the room. My niece worked at Caribbean Beach for a while - they are supposed to stop in every room daily.
Yes. So full housekeeping is every other day. The “check” happens on the non-housekeeping day. We had a DND tag on our room when DS6 was sick. DH and DS6 left the room for a little bit. When I got back to the room with DS6 about 1.5 hours later, we had a voicemail in the room asking when they could do the wellness check. We did have someone knock on our door shortly thereafter and did a check from the walkway when I told him we were sick.
I think the persistence probably exists when you have DND sign out. If it’s not out, they will catch you when you’re in the room or at the parks. With the DND, they try not to disturb but are actually required to disturb, so that feels more annoying.
